Internet Speeds around Adelaide

Hi, thinking to move to Adelaide area at some point this year, wondering if I would be able to get a bit of input on where to and where not to settle for internet speeds.
My understanding would be that it won't matter much with service providers if the area in general is poorly connected.
some input regarding what areas are using FTTN/FTTP etc and the speeds to expect from those areas would be helpful

of if u know of a very obvious area with excellent speeds that'd be great thanks

**thanks for responses so far, can I also ask if there's any experience about how the internet gets delivered with apartment buildings? whether u would suffer some losses to speed compared to a typical standalone house

  • Colonel Light Gardens and Prospect and surrounds have FttP.
I think that might be it for metro Adelaide.

    Otherwise FttN or HFC.

    • I haven't tried HFC but I believe uploads are kinda poor with that option?

      • The nbn HFC upload limit is 50Mbps.

Going off an area is too broad with the nbn multi technology mix. You can have FTTN, FTTC, FTTP and so on all in the same area with different top download and upload speed. It is best to check each address individually. Service qualification checker with a speed estimate.

Apartment buildings internet can be done by nbn or an alternative private broadband company. Generally they have FTTB or FTTP. Speed loss depends on the technology used in the premises.

    FTTH gives you gigabit.

    • is that different from FTTP?

      • I dunno, probably not. A home is a premises you'd think. I've had gigabit nbn in Adelaide and it's perfect, solid gigabit speeds and solid low ping. Honestly it was better than the sex I was having at the time.

        • and what area would I have to live to get this gigabit?

          • @chronophysicist: I think the NBN map might tell you, also you can put the address in the Aussie website and it'll tell you if you can get it. Aussie were the only ones that had gigabit at the time but that's probably changed by now.

            • @AustriaBargain: Sorry probs been a while since this thread has been active but hopefully you still see this. Just wondering what ISP and plan did you get to obtain those gigabit speeds

FTTH and FTTP is the same thing.

  • Google it for nbn layout map ? It's tells you which format available where.

  • Internet speed is that important over crime, employment, schools, transport, shops etc ?

    • crime, employment, schooling, shops

You need internet for all those things.

Do they even have electricity in Adelaide yet?

  • HFC in Glynde.

Pay for 50MB/s and get it at peak hour.

    • what are the uploads like with HFC?

  • I never really took any plan higher than 50 Mbps, but on FTTC i got like 53 Mbps on the 50 Mbps NBN plan,

But 5G internet is a lot lot better and cheaper for me IMO too

    • what's are the uploads like for that?

      • Depends on the location to be honest,

In my house one place gets like ~170/26, other place gets like 110/40, other gets like 70/50,
Its never really consistent but nevertheless for the price Its certainly worth it.

  • Most new developments will have FTTP
Depending on the area you want to live, I’m in Mount Barker. 25 minutes to the city, 1000/50mbps

  • There are nbn datasets here: https://data.gov.au/dataset/ds-dga-ed264f72-5fdf-4a54-8381-d…

I downloaded the dataset and opened in google earth (I didn't have much luck with the nationalmap.gov.au links)

In the Data Import dialog click "Restrict to view" on the. Otherwise it freezes. Also apply a Style Template to colour by Network_Infrastructure. e.g. FTTN Red, FTTP Orange, etc.

    Looks something like this

  • I get 94-96 down and 35+ up most of the time on my 100/40 plan on FTTN (and my node is a way away). I'm running off the Greenfields Depot.

Internet speeds in Adelaide are like internet speeds in every other Australian capital city. Some suburbs got the better technologies, others didn't. Some of the ones that didn't are now getting upgrades. It is suburb by suburb. You could ask about every suburb individually, and even then parts of that suburb would be poor and others good. You need to find a map of what areas get or are getting what technology, and see whether any of the ones with good speed are places you want to live.

My suburb in the north got FTTN. But in the last few months its been upgraded to FTTC. Is FTTC fast enough for you, or by fast do you mean only FTTP.

    • I think FTTC will suffice but knowing that there is a possibility for gigabit speeds is very appealing
