Where Is My Opticomm Box? Do I Connect Router to It?

Aussie Broadband said I have FTTC or FTTP they said I wouldnt need a basic modem. Just plug your Google nest router and you're set.

I tried plugging in my router to all the Ethernet ports in the house and it doesn't work? Can't connect to it.

Where is my opticomm box. What does it look like. Do I have to plug the Google nest router in there?

  • OptiComm is FTTP. nbn has FTTC and FTTP. What does it say at https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential ?

    • I checked my address and it said
OptiComm delivers a fibre network to this area.

      • The OptiComm ONT can be anywhere and is commonly found in the garage. There is a chance it hasn't been installed. Is this a brand new property?

Plug the Nest Wi-Fi into the OptiComm ONT. Purchase a Gigabit switch and plug that into the Nest Wi-Fi to make all the ethernet ports live.

        • I have no idea where it is. I can't find it

It's a 10 year old property. Gotta ask the previous owners I think

          • @bigballerbrand: There's a possibility the previous owner packed it up thinking it was their modem.

That's the box. The opticomm thing is missing??

          • @bigballerbrand: It isn't. that's your alarm system.

Is there anything on the end of that blue cable…?

            • @Lord Fart Bucket: Nope. Blue cable was just hanging there on nothing. It's coming from the wall but not connected to anything.

I can't find the opticomm box. I don't know where else to look. I think it's on the side of the house but that wouldn't make sense right? Because then how would you connect to it? Shouldn't it be inside somewhere

              • @bigballerbrand:

Because then how would you connect to it?

Maybe through that loose blue cable?

Have you tried plugging in to it?

  • This is what's outside my house

    • Is the big white box, above telstra box the one in the photo you shared earlier and has a battery and one more thing in it?

      • That looks like the electrical switchboard. The other (alarm?) box was on a plaster wall, not brick

    • Look in the box at bottom right. If you don't have the special key to open a pair of pliers will probably do it.

My very helpful neighbour said I need a modem.

He said the opticomm box is on the side of the house and that the connection is these 4 ports in my warddrobe. So I need to go and buy a modem/router and then I'll have internet

If I've understood correctly, the Opticomm box is basically your modem. It should give you Ethernet, to connect to your existing Google Nest Router.

Here's a house pretty similar to yours (although with solar added):

          http://adgnetworks.blogspot.com/2012/08/opticomm-electricity…

So the Opticomm box should be in that beige cabinet on the external wall.

You said you'd already tried the ethernet jacks in the house right? So it seems something is amiss…

@abb: Opticomm box is not a modem. You still need a modem-router where you will input your login credentials supplied by rsp.

            • @bhakharvadi: OK, thanks for the correction. What (if anything) does the opticomm box do then? Fibre to VDSL or something?

              • @abb: Opticomm box is the optical network termination device (ONT as everyone else would say), that is where the yellow thin fibre cable ends and you get an ethernet cable out of it which will go into your modem's usually red coloured WAN port.

                • +1

@bhakharvadi: Router WAN port. There is no modem for FTTP.

              • +1

@abb: The OptiComm ONT converts the incoming fibre to ethernet.

                • +1

@Twix: Very interesting! That's what I thought it would do initially, so you just need a router with a WAN port.

            • @bhakharvadi: There u go. I am getting conflicting information. Some people saying opticomm box is a modem and some people saying no I still need a modem router.

I have a Google nest wifi router I thought I could connect that to the LAN port in the wall to get it going but the Google home app can't find the device

Do I need a modem router and then connect the Google nest wifi to that?

              • @bigballerbrand: It appears my guess may be wrong, your neighbour's info is more likely correct.

Open that box I mentioned to check, or check out your neighbour's setup

              • @bigballerbrand: I know it's confusing.

Yes, you will need a modem in front of the google nest wifi, google nest wifi will help you extend wifi coverage. If you still are unsure, see if ethernet port on nest device says WAN or not.

You need that WAN port, which will be on a modem-router.

          • @abb: You are right. The OptiComm ONT gives you ethernet to Nest Wi-Fi.

            • @Twix: so do I need a modem or not?

currently without a modem, I can't get the google home app to find the nest router when i go to set up device

              so wtf do I do?

              • @bigballerbrand: No modem. OpitComm ONT, ethernet cable and Nest Wi-Fi is all that is needed. Where does that ethernet cable in the Hills home hub go to?

  • Another company that does opticomm optical network termination box is Adtran.

  • @bigballerbrand, I stand corrected, you can use nest router without extra device just plug it into ethernet cable coming from opticomm box and of course you will need credentials from isp.

    follow this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6246630?hl=en-A…

    select PPPoE

    • Aussie BB don't use PPPoE. Aussie BB use DHCP that doesn't use your ISP credentials.

      • so what do i do? I have aussie BB.

I plug the ethernet into the device and i search on google home app but it doesn't find the device.

how can I even test that the ethernet is working

        • that is a little bit weird, your phoone should be able to at least connect to nest router or find it from google home app.

have you previously used the nest router or is this first time setup?

And I think Aussie BB provide nest router as an additional purchase, so you might be able to get a bit of tech help from them

          • @bhakharvadi: @bigballerbrand found the ethernet cable for the OptiComm ONT and plugged the Nest Wi-Fi in. I suggested to factory reset Nest Wi-Fi, redo the Google Home app settings and it started working.

              @Twix: Yay 🕺👏
And here on the other end we had total internet outage which just started working few minutes ago.

  • Even if the old owners took the OptiComm fibre to ethernet convertor box (maybe Huawei branded), you should still be able to find a loose hanging Fibre cable - could be yellow/blue in colour but much thinner than an ethernet cable.
The way connections work is that you get Fibre cable to your OptiComm box with Ethernet ports. You plug an ethernet cable from your WiFi router to the OptiComm ethernet port number 1.
