i'm on a 3600 on a B550 board. worth the upgrade to a 5600x? are AMD releasing any AM4 refreshes soon?

    • +4

AM4 is pretty much done now. AM5 is coming out later this year with the 7k line up. I think there was 1 new AM4 cpu but thats it.

      • +2

hmm guess ill wait a bit more hope they drop more in price

        • +1

Same here. Idk if should pull the trigger or wait

        • +6

Unless you're bottlenecking on your CPU, wait. There will be the refresh with the new cache which will push these down in price at the very least. We also are still suffering from the wafer shortage, which will continue to ease over the rest of the year.

        • +3

Not really worth the upgrade in 2022 because:

          • AM5 / Zen 4 CPUs should have decent performance leap.
          • AM5 based boards most likely would counter Intel 12th gen better (so that means 4 NVMe slots, USB 3.2 gen 2x2 or Thunderbolt 4, PCIe gen 5 support, maybe 2.5GB LAN standard).
          • 5nm CPUs, look at what Apple was able to achieve with M1.
          • Will AMD also put in a better embedded GPU?

Unless… you can sell your 3600 and get a really good price for that.

          • @netsurfer: I think I might stick with my Ryzen 3600, wait for AM5 and get a whole new system.

And the current computer I can give to my old man.

      • ANY RYZEN 3000'S PLZ?

      • This would be a good idea if AM5 isn't so ridiculously expensive. Why? well first they are ditching DDR4 memory so have fun having anything budget when you wanna get DDR5 memory good enough for the CPU. Next, if the guy is getting a 5600x he's definitely not going to be searching for the high-end stuff which DDR5 basically is for that price… I myself just bought a 5900x from this deal knowing am5 is coming.

    • +9

Only AM4 refresh coming is the 5800X3D, otherwise AM5 is coming at year end so this will be the end of the line.

IMO it's not worth the upgrade unless you're running a high end GPU or have some very intensive CPU tasks you use a lot. This article gives a good idea on how CPUs scale vs GPU - https://www.techspot.com/article/2201-four-years-of-ryzen-5-…

Personally I'm running a 3700X and am holding out for the 5800X3D as one last upgrade to last a couple of years before needing a new board and RAM as well. Don't really fancy DDR5 prices at the moment (and there's not much benefit).

      • +2

        yeah I play in 1080p on a 3080.

        • +5

If you're playing at 1080p on a 3080 you will see significant boosts in fps with a 5600x over a 3600.

I pulled the trigger on this deal to replace my 3600, but at 1440p I will only see slight benefits in some titles, but worth it for me as my build is now complete and I don't have to think about it anymore.

          • +5

@Technishon: I've got a 3600 and 3080ti but I only play in 4k, where pretty much all games are gpu bottlenecked.

God of war in 4k at 90-100fps was using like 40% utilisation of my 3600

Drop down to 1080p for any competitive shooters and I can get to 280fps on them all which is the max refresh rate of my 2nd monitor

Spend more on your GPU if it's for gaming

            • +2

@Jarr0d: Ah this makes me feel better. running a 3600 and 3080ti at 240hz 1440p, but not really noticing any lag\stutters. Could also be getting old :D

            • @Jarr0d: Out of interest how do you find gaming 4K with above 60fps? Tempted as I bought an LG C1.

        • It'd be better to put that money into a 1440p monitor, and then upgrade when the AM5 platform rolls around, or to LGA 1700 down the line

      • I reckon there will be at least an OEM 6000G APU.
AM5 will start with Ryzen 7000.

      • Personally I'm looking for the 5900X to come in below $500. Then wait till both DDR5 gets to a sane price, and Zen 5/4C (skipping Zen 4) - https://youtube.com/dE9N95uSqHA?t=816

      • Good link I have a 1600x and was thinking of getting 5800X3D if I can get one on ebay sale like this.
Please tell me it wont be a limited run.

    • Some fairly significant platform changes are coming this year with AM5 and new Zen4/Raptor Lake CPU's. Since they'll support DDR5 it should become more mainstream and widely adopted dropping prices of RAM as for now DDR5 is still pricey.

    • Unless you have a 3070+ / 2080 Ti or play like CS:GO at 1080p not really any need to upgrade the CPU.

  • +5

Good price as far as 5600x goes but not really that appealing compared to 12400f which goes for 289 w/shipping at centrecom. Even including the $150~ or so for a cheap lga1700 mobo it still seems a better deal? I thought 5000 series have been cheaper before whats up with the price staying high even with 12th gen here already and AM5 coming very soon?

    • +1

yeah, I don't understand why the price is so high. Currently running a 2600x and really wanting to upgrade to 5600x because I already have a decent mobo.

    • $77 cheaper only to spend $120 more on a cooler and motherboard to still be 2% slower

      • +2

Dunno where you got your info mate but Alder lake definitely does not have any thermal issues unlike rocketlake and the stock cooler can handle it just fine-while I do agree that the wraith prism is still better. As far as performance goes, the 12400f is quite a bit faster at single threaded benchmarks, it does lose a few % in games (may because of smaller cache?) but trade blows against the 5600x in multithreaded productivity benchmarks.

  • +1

I had only just picked up the $399 ple deal a few hours ago, luckily was able to cancel and save $23 on this one!

    • Which one saved you $23

      • I cancelled the ple order with a phone call and picked up the eBay deal for $376

  • I have 3300x paired with 6700xt. Just bought lg c1, is it worth upgrading to 5600x for 4k 60 fps on meduim to high settings for most games?

    • +3

At 4k you're most likely GPU bottlenecked, so no.

    • +3

      For peak FPS, no.
To avoid low 1% lows and other intermittent issues, yes.

  • hmmm not sure if i should get a 5600x. Currently running 3600x with a 3070. does what I want for now, but I did buy that combo with a CPU upgrade in the back of my mind in the future.

    • It's a good price but I think it should match the 12400f.

    • +5

Not worth it imo. 5600x isn’t that huge of an upgrade over the 3600x to justify upgrading. Wait a bit more for the 5800X3D to drop. Probably the best cpu upgrade for the AM4, assuming you are using it mainly for gaming.

      • I'm tempted to wait as the 5800X3D sounds good, but on the other hand I read that the 5800X3D will be extremely expensive and limited production.

    • Do you have a 1080p gaming monitor and mostly game in 1080p? Or, you really have some usage which can benefit from all those cores? The benefit you get from upgrading that CPU really diminishes with 2K and 4K gaming.

AMD 5xxx series CPUs are not priced well because AMD knows there is demand and they were beating the equivalent Intel offerings. After seeing Intel 12th gen offerings, it is best to reset your goal. The incremental upgrade isn't worth it and this AM4 platform is highly upgradable isn't really worth it now.

It's really a numb your brain upgrade. The fact that you haven't upgraded means you don't really need that upgrade. Best to move forward and plan for AM5/Zen4. If Intel 12th gen platform is any indicator (i.e. you can now go all NVMe SSDs with 4 NVMe SSD support, and forget SATA3 (they are still there if you want them), USB 3.2 gen 2x2 and/or Thunderbolt 4), PCIe gen 5 support from CPU), it is better to wait for AMD's Zen4 5nm CPUs.

      • I have a 34inch Dell 1440p monitor. mostly game at its native res 3440x1440

    • At 1140p you'll still get a pretty decent uplift in performance with the 5600x so I would say its actually a worthwhile upgrade.

Someone posted a techspot article about how the 5600x performs compared to the previous gen ones and at 1440p there's a substantial difference in performance!

  • Is the 5700G a good deal? Looking to build a PC with no gaming in mind

    • +1

Yep, but depending on your usage you might be better off saving the money and getting a 5600G.

  • Depends if you need PCIe Gen4, the 5000 APU's don't support Gen4 which in your case would be mainly for NVMe Gen4.

    • The APU’s are really just unlocked mobile 5600H/5800H chips, hence the lack of pcie 4.0 support and smaller L3 cache.

  • +3

It's been so long since the 5600X has been below $400, that I'm now too lazy to even bother upgrading.

  • 5900x for $687.20 using 20% discount (PJAN20), really good price!

  • They just restocked 5600x. Is in high demand at this price snapped one up.

    • +1

      Out of stock again

  • Sweet, managed to pick up 5600x that slipped out of someone's basket.
looking forward to upgrading my 3600, should get a good price for my used chip.

  • +1

I've bought from these guys before. Good seller. Fast shipping, no fuss.

    • +1

It's just one of Shopping Express' sock puppet accounts. The only difference is they get stingy on giving you a tax invoice.

      • Love it how people down vote you for stating facts.

      • Whats’s actually wrong with it being SE?

  • +2

12400f is only $299. 5600x at $ 366.6 is not a decent deal now. B660 is more expensive but the extra $67.6 on 5600x is bridging the gap to some extent.

    • This had been my plan, in the end I gave in to the convenience of not needing to start from scratch and reinstall everything.

  • Remember when 3d vcache announcement was going to make all these obsolete and hugely discounted?

Except they're all still at old bargain prices :(

    • Chip isn't out yet, people are still predicting price reductions.

      • It's only the one - 5800 :/ and it'll be a while.

What a shame. I liked seeing 5900 at $650, was hoping to see it drop to even $550

    • Announcement isn't going to result in a huge discount. Perhaps Intel's H670 and B660 will give consumers more cost effective options.

3D vcache is good marketing and a decent stop gap approach, but if B660 offers PCIe gen 4 from the chipset (+ 1 managed by the CPU) and USB 3.2 gen 2x2, will B550 be attractive enough still? The main reason B550 is doing well is because AMD crippled B450 and X470 in the BIOS microcode (to block PCIe gen 4 support via the CPU).

AMD has no intention to introduce a price war with Intel. Instead, it has tasted the benefit of milking the customers a bit.

      • I mean I already got 3700x, I hardly need it, but was hoping to see the 5900x drop even more in price as history is showing it breaking as low as $650.

        • What exactly do you expect to gain from 5900X? After seeing Intel 12th gen, M1 (Pro/Max), it is obvious why AMD will go AM5 next.

Do you actually do a lot of 4K video work? Or, you just want that feeling that you managed to score a 5900X at a good price?

          • @netsurfer: I lined up a good sale price on 3700x which might have covered cost.

  • I believe gg.tech365 is another front for Shopping Express?

When I ordered something through gg.tech365 it turned up in a Shopping Express box.

  • I've been running a Ryzen 5 1600af (basically a 2600 chip) on a cheap b450 board, with an rtx2070s - is it worth the cpu upgrade to a 5600g for 2k gaming?

    • -1

      No, im running i5 4670 ddr3 8gb, will skip ddr4, feels good

  • -2

Wait 2yrs for am5 and ddr5 to become cheap!

  • What are the chances of a restock of the 5600x ?

I have just purchased a b550 from another deal and the 5600x at approx. $360 would have been really amazing for me.

    I've been rocking an i5 6600k for close to 6 years now…

    • 5600x has been restocked.

      • I missed it ! Damn it ! 😅

  • 5600X has been restocked! Still available at time of comment. Snagged one to replace 2600X.

  • 5600x sold out now. Had it in my cart then gone.

  • Hi, I am building my first PC. Any suggestion for Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G. I see its a $80 price difference. not sure if it worth it???

    • All depends on what you want to do on your PC.
      Gaming - neither.
      General productivity - either.
General now and add a GPU later - either, high res don't need a strong CPU, low res and high FPS go the 5700G.

  • What's the best mobo for the 5600G in a Mini-ITX case? Best, as in with most ports, fastest, best etc.

    • Also looking for a recommendation, they all seem quite expensive compared to the larger ones

      • I found this summary but still not sure what specific board is best out of B450, B550 or x570:
When picking the best Ryzen 5 5600G motherboard, you have two main options. You can either go with the X570 chipset or the B550 chipset. The X570 is the top-of-the-line variant that comes with PCIe Gen4 chipset uplink and general-purpose lanes. The B550 motherboard is more consumer-oriented and supposedly budget-friendly. Both chipsets feature PCIe Gen4 for the graphics card and storage. Both chipsets also feature USB 3.1 Gen2, support overclocking, and dual graphics cards. Talking about the general design, the X570 motherboards come with a chipset fan while the B550 motherboards do not.

  • Thank OP!

  • 5600x restocked
    Orderes. Thanks
