Don't post often, please correct if necessary. Been looking to get this for a while and finally picked up a copy off ebay the other day for $60, then see this, ouch! Overall rank of 24 on bgg. It's a cooperative deck building game for 1-4 players, apparently best for 2 players. I really enjoy lovecraft themed games, hope someone else does as well :)

Highly highly recommend this game. It's awesome.

Can be played solo easily. Duo is more fun tho.

Warning tho - this will lead you down an expensive (but insanely fun) rabbit hole!

  • Looks complicated!

    • +2

think youll be fine if youve played dominion or wingspan. if youve only played uno, then yeah, bit more complicated haha

      • +2

I would say it's still a noticeable step up from games like Wingspan and Dominion in terms of complexity. Also should note there's a revised core set now which comes with a few minor changes and extra cards although I think this older core box is a better place to start if you're not sure what you're getting yourself into. Living card games like this end up taking a lot of time and money.

        • my copy hasnt arrived yet, what would you say its comparable to? aeons end?

          • +2

@crazyhor77: It's one of those games that people tend to unconsciously house-rule, just because the actual rules are hilariously complicated and easy to get wrong. Literally if you want to play it right you should be using an enormous 6 page flow chart here :

            https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/176509/arkham-horror-card…

But absolutely nobody I've met who plays, plays it anything like that, tracking every enemy and player card keyword specifically in the way shown on the chart. The good news is: you don't have to play it like the chart at all and, a couple of packs excepted, it plays fine if you just want to play it to have fun.

I have this game. Great for 2 players on the same brainwave. It takes a bit of trial and error to fully grasp the game but once it clicks it’s very easy to set up and play. One thing to note is that OP mentioned 1-4 players. It’s only viable to play with more than 2 players IF you’ve bought an additional set for the extra cards. Otherwise one set for 2 players is fine.

  • Can this be played with everything in the box or will I need to buy booster packs of cards and other stuff to get the full experience?

    • Not sure, my copy hasn't arrived yet, refer to knugs comment above

    • You'll need a second core set if you want to play with 3-4 properly or make specialised hands for 2 ppl.

The expansions are essentially new campaigns. The core set campaign is quite short but fun, jumping into the expansions are huge, expansive and highly recommended.

    • Being an LCG, there isn't really booster packs.

More like minor and major expansions that give cards for new stories (major exp) and expand on those stories (minor exp).

  • sorry for the noob question, but why would it end up being expensive??
are there more expansions or something like that?
if there are how many more??

    TIA

there is a tonne of additions to this game, so i guess the more enjoy it, the more tempted you will be to buy them haha, fyi https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/arkham-horror…

    • Yeah, from what I gathered from looking into the game, there are regular expansion packs released every month - each new expansion campaign has a big intro box, and then 6 more expansions packs (that must be purchased for the complete experience). All up, comments were suggesting $120USD all up per expansion.

The original set contains 3 campaigns/scenarios, I believe. The expectation is, that if you like the game, you'll be subscribing to the monthly packs for $20USD a month (or something).

LCG = Living Card Game. ie. It continues to grow, and you will constantly be buying more packs! It's like Magic The Gathering and other collectible card games, except without the random/mystery packs.

(From all accounts, the content is awesome, and one is likely to WANT to keep buying expansions - hence why buying this will lead you down an expensive path!)

Apparently, there are also "one shot" individual scenarios that you can purchase, as well as fan made content - if you want additional content but don't want to shell out $120USD a pop on the expansion campaigns!

    • Think of the expansions as DLC.

New campaigns, characters, items. The expansion campaigns are far superior and far longer than the core seat intro campaign. It just gives you a good taste of the fun.

      • got it, just a quick questions about the "return" products
Do I need the "Dunwich Legacy" to play "return to the Dunwich Legacy" ?? or it is just an upgraded version?

        • +1

Yeah, the "return to" expansions are expansions to the expansions - you will need the original expansions.

Before people dash to buy this, let me share my exp with the game:

It's an awesome game and concept but I wouldn't treat this as a "board game" in the traditional sense. This version of the game (LCG) is based the original arkham horror board game. It is a LCG which means that it is built around the concept of collecting cards in the same manner as magic the gathering and pokemon, etc. The reason is that the replayability of the game is quite limited if you are playing with just the base set (which is this one). The game is essentially a story driven "campaign" split into different expansions, where you can play as different characters and build your own deck. As you buy more expansions you get to access more of the story as well as unlock more cards/characters, giving you the ability to play through the campaigns with more options. This means you will quickly find that the base set will quickly fall flat, and you will be driven to purchase the other expansions. Expansions of this game are not cheap and are around the same as the base set if not more. So you can see how it will very quickly add up to hundreds of dollars. That said if you are a hobbyist of this type and are willing to spend money on these type of things, then yes you should buy it. I would not recommend for more casual audiences (like myself) as I have realised I am not going to continue spending hundreds of dollars into this type of game, despite how much I like the concept. I would've probably done better buying the original arkham horror board game.

Also note that it is very much a single or 2 player game only, so it's not a game you will be bringing out in larger groups. Even 3 or 4 player won't be playable using a single base set.

So it's very different from say a ticket to ride, seven wonders or settlers of catan.

Thanks op, was waiting for sub $50 price to try this….. Mind you I haven't opened Marvel Champions yet becuase of the LCG… Doesn't matter, buy first think layer!

    • like the way you think :)

    • Lol @ Nalar and I thought you didn't have your wife's permission to buy board games any more 😂

      • Shhhhh

        • its ok I've hidden a couple of unopened boxes as well :)

          • @docians: I think the next step is to hide smaller games in bigger game boxes.

I reckon I could fit a smaller game or two in the Box for TTR: Europe, and I've got an empty Villainous expansion box sitting there too…

            • @Nalar:

I reckon I could fit a smaller game or two in the Box for TTR: Europe,

How? It's pretty tight in that box with all those inserts

              • @docians: We don't play it, I could just remove whole game from box.

    • I am a big fan of marvel champions. I was first given the base game as a gift. Little did I know how expensive LCGs can be. I’m now all in and buy every pack (when on sale). My friend has Arkham horror in full and it’s pretty much two suitcases…I’ve started justifying my habit to my wife by saying the kids will be able to play with us in a few years!
