Cheap Speakers to Connect Directly to Monitors

I have a monitor with audio input and was thinking of using it as tv as well without needing a laptop. Plan was to connect the Amazon FireTV directly with monitor. The video part works as it goes into the HDMI input of the monitor. However, need to work out on how to get the sound.

What is category for these speakers? Are they just any computer speakers or monitor speakers?

Just looking to get sound. Doesn't need to be fantastic sound.

Would something like this work? https://au.creative.com/p/speakers/creative-stage-air#buy-me…

  • I'm not sure which way you want to use the monitor and speakers. There are two scenarios I can think of:

Output audio signal from monitor to external speakers: Speakers need to have Line In capability (assuming monitor outputs analog signal). Echo Dots only have Line Out so you need the larger Echo devices for this scenario.

    OR

Input audio signal from external device to monitor: Any devices with Line Out capability will work and does not have to be a speaker.

    • Yeah i had a look and echo wouldn't work. They don't have any audio out/in. I am looking at Echo Show 5. I think this is there for google hubs. So, need to go for standard speaker solution

  • Are you expecting to be able to see the youtube video from the Amazon Echo on the monitor?

    • Just the sound. The viode would be on monitor. Actually plan was to run the FireTV as it plugs directly into the hdmi input of monitor. But no sound

      • There is no way to display the video from the Echo on a monitor.

Added later: I see that you've edited the original question; you're now asking about a Fire TV instead of an Echo.

  • Typically (less than 5x5M room with speakers having a wall behind them) you'll want 4-6" powered studio monitors, ideally not vented but vented to the front if they are.

However it's better to connect the speakers to the computer device via line out or SPDIF rather than the monitor headphone out for audio quality.

    • +1

I don't think OP cares about such things when his main criteria is "cheap" and using this just to watch youtube videos

    • Yeah. I only have monitors. Trying to not have computer involved.

  • If the hardware connectors of the devices allow then it will work.

  • If your Echo has an Aux input then you can do it easily. Just find a 3.5mm audio cable and you're gold.

  • Thanks for everyone's input. I ended up buying this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0158JRAE6?psc=1&smid=ANEGB3WVE…
It was just $15 on sale (down from $29).
    Lets hope it works.

    • I'm not sure what you are going to plug those speakers into. I don't have a Fire TV but a quick Google suggests that it doesn't have an audio output. You didn't tell us what monitor you have - does it have an audio output?

      • I believe the HDMI going into the monitor carries the audio signal. OP simply connects the external speaker to the monitor to get sound.

OP, the speakers you bought are USB-powered so will need to be plugged into either a spare USB port on the TV or an external USB charger.

        • HDMI will carry the audio signal, but not all monitors have an audio output socket that extracts the sound signal for you.
We would need to know the brand & model of the monitor to verify this.
If your monitor doesn't have this (and the Fire TV doesn't have a seperate audio output) then you will need an audio extraction box:

        • Thanks.
I didn't realise but my monitor has has 2 usb, 2hdmi and audio jack.
          Lets see if it works
