Anyone got a TL;DR on the AMD refresh and next gen chips? From memory the refresh is supposed to come out mid-year - any news on whether it might beat out 12th gen intel, or even be worth the wait over the existing lineup?
The AMD refresh is largely the same as the current range in terms of performance with better iGPU.
You're confusing it with the announcement for laptop cpu's which happened recently.
We don't really know anything about the performance for next gen CPU's just yet. Although it will be a new platform that will apparently be supported for a long time, which is a big deal for some people IMO
Thanks for clarifying. I've definitely mixed it up. But it leads me to believe that if they could not improve on the mobile CPUs which are based on and a cut down version of the current 5000 series desktop CPUs then the same can be expected from the desktop range.

C'mon man, if you are going to speculate on its performance, at least read up a bit on what the changes are. That is such a poor way to speculate
- node shrink to 5nm (which could mean better performance/efficiency and/or squeeze in more cores)
- doubling of cache with 3d cache
There is one new CPU coming out in Q2 this year - the 5800X3D which should equal or beat the 12900K, the next gen is later this year or early next 2023
I need this combo but when I typed "Z690 issues" on the Google I saw fair amount of topics related to Asus and Gigabyte Z690 mobos. Not much for MSI which makes me think that maybe MSI is safer bet for a Z690 mobo.
What do you guys think?
Go for MSI, I have had issues with Aorus Gigabyte Mobos since Z390.
I was mistaken in my comment above. Clearly it’s true that Gigabyte is a great brand for motherboards.
Counterargument: Go for Gigabyte, I've had issues with my last 2 MSI boards.
Wow, why is the 12900k cheaper than the 5950x? About the only thing that the 5950x seems to have over the 12900k is power efficiency, which no one should care about when you are spending this much on a cpu
Power, cooling solution as well. You can use an air cooler for 5950X but 12900K requires a 360mm aio.
There is an argument each way. The 12900k seems to be better because Intel has removed the peak performance limits on the CPU. Instead of a couple of minutes at the highest clock speed it runs full throttle for as long as the cooler can keep up (which will fail at some point so throttling back to a lower performance level is foreseeable). So that's why it beats the 5950x in many benchmarks. But that tells me the lifespan of this processor will be limited. So the 5950x will likely have better longevity and not need a particularly strong cooler.
PS. It also means that under standard use with a reasonable cooler the 5950x is likely 5-10% better as reflected in the prices.
600-series Motherboards all so expensive so far!
If a 12700kf is of interest I don't hate this bundle at $899

How the the temperature on load?

Having adequate CPU cooling and case airflow is certainly going to be essential.
OMG 92C, good enough to make a cup of tea.
Also good in winter, keep my room warm. This comment explains why it'll heat up so much. Ditch the air cooler like Techpowerup used and get a 280mm or 360mm AIO. Then you'll see temps down to ~75 at 240W TDP.
So what are the savings here? A quick look on my phone (and early morning) make this around $280??
currently running this cpu paired with a GA Aorus Elite AX board and 4000mhz ram with a NH-D15 cooler.. nice upgrade indeed..
this seems to be $1,349 now… Any way to get the original deal ($150 difference)?
