Castrol Edge 0W-40 A3/B4 Synthetic Engine Oil 5L - $51.57 + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C/ $99 Spend) @ Automotive Superstore

90

40% off RRP, and actually ~45% off if you check SCA or Autobarn prices.
Suits Germany turbo charged engines, such as VW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz.
Bought for family's C-Class sedan, which should use MB Approval 229.5 oils, including 5w40 or 0w40, where popular & cheap 5w30 is unsuitable.

0w-40 oil is usually much more expensive than 5w30 products. Different things.

This is only for those cars need 0w-40 and OEM Approval standards.

Meets or exceeds industry specifications:

  • American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Classification (Petrol) : SN, SM, SL, SJ, SH and all superseded classifications. (Diesel) : CF
  • ACEA A3/B4 High performance shear stable petrol/diesel engine oil
  • BMW Longlife – 01
  • VW 502 00/ 505 00
  • MB-Approval 229.3/ 229.5
  • Porsche A40

Additionally, you can get a Mann filter at 40% off if you buy 2 bottles of this oil. Good for someone also needs the oil filter.

EDGE 5W-40 A3/B4 meets the same specs and is usually cheaper, eg. goes on sale for the same price as the 5W-30.

It's effectively the same thing here in Australia where the cold cranking viscosity is pretty much irrelevant.

You're correct, the specs on paper are similar. However 0w40 oils are formulated on group IV PAO base oil (actually fully synthetic) while 5w30 oil is formulated on group III ("fully synthetic" aka highly refined mineral oil).

This is why 0w oils are always more expensive than 5w oils. Not that any of this matters in street car.
