What is the cleaning like with these things, do the leak on the outside and inside of the machine

    • +2

I am also very curious, looks like more fine/precision cleaning compared to the ol' rice cooker.

    • +3

I have a similar one; its quite good assuming you do it same night.

The top internal lid pops out, the bowl lifts out, and they both wash.

The insides I just wipe with a paper towel; but theres never more than steam in there.

The upside of these controlled pressure ones, they dont usually froth when boiling.

If they do, put a drop of oil into your water before cooking, and it'll never froth again :)

We picked up one of these cookers last time they were on sale at Aldi.

To answer your question, on occasion, steam / water does make its way out of the vent in the lid. This sometimes ends up on the catch tray under the lid, and sometimes makes its way down the back of the cooker. Haven't worked out really why it does this, as it's not that much of a bother to clean with a simple wipe down.

I'm told by my better half that the bowl is not dishwasher proof - she might just find it funny to make me wash it by hand.
(I have "accidentally" run it through the dishwasher a couple of time - seems to be ok still)

      • +2

Put a drop of oil in the water, it will stop the foaming :)

        • +1

Thanks for the tip. Will give it a go!

  • +1

We find that it tends to dry out the rice if kept in it too long unlike our old one….

    • Dry out? You can put more water in there?

  • +1

pressure cookers are also good for rice.

    • What’s your pressure cooker method? :)

      • +1

For short grain rice, we wash/rinse several times, add water equal to rice, pressure cook 5 mins, hit cancel to stop the keep warm function, natural release 15 mins.

        • Sounds good! I’ve seen some people put it in another bowl on a trivet to steam it rather than directly pressure cook it in the water, but I’m definitely gonna give that a shot. Thanks!

    10-Cup Digital Rice Cooker $58.88 @ ALDI

This was already posted the other day…

  • Anyone knows what happens after 24 hours with the keep warm?

      Emotional Damage to RICE !

      • It ferments and turns in rice wine

    • +2

      It self destructs…

    • +2

Uncle Roger would be very pissed at you.

      • Does it come with an orange polo?

If you want to cook good rice, only buy cockoo or tiger brand. Trust me. Im asian.

    • +4

I use Philips or Panasonic, they both good too, cooking time is much quicker than all my previous Tigers

      • I have a Phillips Grain Master. The 20 min rice cook is great.

    • +5

Meh target or Kmart does the job well enough

    • +5

I'm Asian. And no, that's not true.

      • +8

    The design is so ricer…

    • yeah it looks an old school honda civic hatchback

  • Invest a bit more in Tiger or Cuckoo, you'll see the different

    • +1

think tiger or cuckoo is more than a bit expensive compared to the aldi.

“A bit more” says this billionaire right here

This Aldi rice cooker looks disturbingly similar to the 10 cup Panasonic rice cooker I just bought including the shape and dimpling on the removal insert in the lid. https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/panasonic-deluxe-10-cup-rice-…. I wonder if it is the same item but at 1/2 the price. I guess it will depend on the menu options.

    • Link you shared goes to one over $200 … so almost 1/4 of the price?

    • +1

Not even close. There are hundreds that share the same design.

      • +2

might have same cosmetic design but secret is in the software …. soak time vs boil time vs standby time …… but then none of these are smart enough to sense how much water to rice ratio and type of rice ( long grain, short grain , jasmine, brown rice, basmati, etc) you have put in and i find the water to rice ratio a big influence on results with each cooker , once you get it right they all cook the same quality.

        • +2

Not quite. They have different heating element technology, so you can get burnt rice on the bottom of some models. There certainly is a difference between cheaper and more expensive models, especially if you’re cooking almost to its capacity.

    • +1

This Midea looks pretty similar to that Panasonic. There's probably a bunch of factories copying each others designs at varying quality levels.

      • Probably all made by TECO or something

  • +2

This is a wonderful rice cooker, I’ve had it for nearly 2 years now and it hasn’t let me down. Also bakes a mean cake too!

  • Aldi has been selling this for 2 years?!

    • +1

It’s a special buy, it comes up every now and then.

    • every 12 months.

  • +1

I bought one last year. It cooks rice just fine, but being <$60 it misses a few features. The bowl is very thin. The one feature missing that amazed me was a clock! An electronic device without a clock! Tiger/Zojirushi have a clock and a time memory function, but they're 5x the price.
without the clock you cannot set the rice to be ready at, say, 6.10 or 6.30am/pm, whatever. Rather, the timer function on this uses a more simple, have the rice ready in a "number of hours". Set it to be ready in, say 3 or 10 hours, but you cannot set the minute. Close but no banana. As I said, it's fine for 50-60 dollarydoos.

At $59 it's cheaper than a replacement bowl for a tiger.

  • Can recommend - add a knob of butter. Makes the non stick even non stickier. Bottom results in a nice crisp and rice comes out in a solid lump but still fluffy. Huge difference to taste and super simple to clean - takes a lot longer than I thought. Prob 30/40 mins for 3 /4 servings

  • Looks like my Tefal multi-cooker

  • +2

I would worry a lot about warranty. These things work well until some leak craps them out. Aldi has been a headache with any sort of support for me in the past.

  • Do these rice cookers use the same Fuzzy Logic technology that the more expensive rice cookers use? Reason I ask is because the design of this one looks very similar to the more expensive ones.

  • +2

    Sold out this morning….

  • Is it ok for Brown rice? I have a very old Philips one with brown rice in the menu settings and takes 2 hours to cook.

  • +2

Got one from Alexandra Hills QLD store yesterday. There were heaps there. Its a big unit compared to a $10 basic one so we had to clear out some cupboard space for it. But we cooked some jasmine rice in it last night and it was much nicer texture than rice in our old one. Pretty happy we bought it. Though keeping the box and reciept for sure as I never have much luck with rice cookers.
