Comprehensive Insurance for Japanese Import - Toyota Mark X?

I saw a Japanese import advertised on Carsales by a private seller. Although it has low mileage and no obvious cosmetic damages, the listing has been there for over three weeks now.

Out of curiosity, I wanted checked how much comprehensive insurance would cost for that car. However, the well-known insurers don't list that model in their quote generation system. I called Budget Direct and the rep said that if it's not listed on the website, that means they won't insure it.

So, how do people insure grey imports that are rare in Australia?

TIA.

Edit - it's a Toyota Mark X

Try getting a quote from Shannons

I used Lumley insurance. Most won't do imports, but it's worth finding as many as you can to find the product you want at the best price.

the listing has been there for over three weeks now.

Because no one is looking for them. Just see how few are on Carsales. Just make sure you realise the effect this will have on resale and parts

  • Budget is called it for a reason. If you or what you want insured are not both perfect for them then they will not insure you/your goods. Allianz is similar and so are any of teh Auto & General Insurance Company owned brands like Budget

Try AAMI or any of the Suncorp Group owned brands.

It’s a nice car but looks very similar to a V6 Camry. This would be much easier to insure and find replacement parts for.

Except a V6 camry isn't cool, and is front wheel drive.

    Enthusiast insurance.

All japanese imports have 'low mileage'.

You may find it's lower today than what it was a few years ago. haha

Take the odometer with a grain of salt and buy on condition.

Not really sure what the attraction of the Mark X unless it was significantly cheaper than the equivalent Toyota Camry.

      Rwd.

    • you can get a Japanese ODO report for about $10USD

      • Got a link? I looked at previous Japanese auctions, but couldn't find this particular car.

    Shannons, Enthusiast etc.
Theres a few options but most of the mainstream insurers won't look at it

    Another one for lumley/iag

Mark II, X are RWD cars. Much better in quality and ride setup. Next level I'd say.

  • Sooooooo, basically a Lexus IS/GS/LS with a different body kit?

    • Is350. Might as well get as local is350 unless the markx is significantly cheaper.

Is350 costs a bomb to insure, should be comparable to a markx.

  • Shannons https://www.shannons.com.au/
They may expect you to be an "car enthusiast" e.g. a car nut or a member of a car club etc

    • One time I spoke to them they said they couldn’t help me if I wasn’t an ‘enthusiast’. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The second time they were more helpful.

  • I use to have a Toyota Mark X I imported one back in 2014, I was insured with Lumley

  • Try RACV. You need to call them up, complete a quote to a model that similar to the Mark X, take phones and vin numbers and email them.

I've completed this process on a imported Toyota Hiace 4wd.
