Samsung Haven't Returned My Traded in iPhone 8

recently i got my hands on the z flip 3 with the trade up promo. i traded in my Iphone 8 but they rejected my phone saying that there was issues with the physical condition, so they charged me $70 for it (i have paid the $70). its been 7 days since they told me that the phone had an issues, but i have yet to receive the iPhone 8 back.
so i called the call centre and they pretty much said that his superior will give a call back in 2 days regarding the issue.

is this normal??

  • same happenned to me for a s21+ trade that was 12 months ago.

    • did you get your old trade in phone back?

      • nope…

kept on trying to contact them but didn't get a resolution i just gave up…

fortunately., it was only a mid tier phone and i bought it ultra cheap, mainly traded it for the $500 bonus

It is important that you follow the steps on the Trade-Up App and provide accurate information about the condition of your device, so you receive the correct trade-in credit. If your device is found to be in a different condition to that declared in the Trade Up App, you will be charged the difference in trade-in credit, even if the value of your device is now $0. As per the Samsung Trade Up Programs terms and conditions (Samsung Online) or the terms and conditions (Samsung Stores) we cannot guarantee that your device will be returned to you.

    • thanks for the reply. do you happen to know the reason why they can't guarantee to return the device.

      • +3

I don't know. I'd speculate the non-guarantee of return is based on deterring people from dumping phones with known issues. It costs money and time to store and return phones.

    • -2

Probably so Samsung can steal the phone..

The condition about not being able to return phone is probably hidden in pages of stuff.. like software agreements most people never read.

Be part of their business model knowing that they can fleece consumers and make a few more $$

I am sure they will onsell it to a 2nd phone dealer .. just at a lower grade.

      • Looking at the offered trade in of $60 for a 64 GB Iphone Samsung is fleecing you to start with and I would not bother.. you could get heaps more just selling it on ebay or gumtree

        For example

        https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-iphone/second+hand+iphone+8/k0c…

        • You're talking rubbish mate, does someone make people choose to use this offer? No they don't.
If you don't like the deal/offer then don't sign up to the terms and Conditions

said that his superior will give a call back in 2 days

    Is it 2 days yet?

If their superior hasn't called back in 2 days phone them again, maybe mention Consumer Affairs.

    • thankyou will do !

  • So was there physical condition with your phone that you knew about?

The APP is pretty good at detecting things like screen issues but the rest is pretty much self declared…

    • it was a minor crack on the bottom, nothing wrong inside of the phone.

      • +5

And how did you represent the condition of the screen?

  • First will need to wait for the 2 days. Though my mate had an issue with Samsung and due to not getting anywhere with support, he emailed the CEO. I think it then went onto an employee and was fixed within 72 hours. I wouldn't jump to that route, but another option.

    • thanks for the reply will keep in mind!

Why would they return a phone you've traded in? From what I understand you traded in your old phone, received a new phone and were charged $70 for discrepancy in condition of the trade in. What am I missing?

    • +4

op came here to be outraged, not to be shown logic.

      • Damn, I just got outraged (without resason), but am not down $70.

Logic went out and we sent people out looking fur them. lol

    • what are they gonna do with a phone that has "issues"
shouldn't they give the phone back since they took the $70

      • lucky you didnt get slugged the trade in bonus value too.

      • +3

The $70 would cover the difference in condition, not the total value. They'll do with it whatever they do with the rest of the trade ins, probably recycle it.

        • +1

They valued my phone at $70. how can the difference in condition be priced at $70

          • +2

@jakepods: Should have mentioned this up front.

          • +1

@jakepods: The valuation I assume was based upon the condition you claimed it was in. Once received and evaluated they obviously determined it was worthless. Why did you pay the $70 if you didn't want to proceed?

            • @apsilon: they automatically charged my card
they also sent me the phone before the evaluation

              • +1

@jakepods: Yep, that's what it says on their trade-up page.

What if the condition of my device is found to be different when it is graded by Asurion?
When your device arrives at the Asurion warehouse, Asurion will assess the condition of the device and verify that it matches the condition you declared in the Trade-Up App. If the condition is found to be different, you will be contacted via email and advised of the difference in trade-in credit. Your credit card will be charged the difference in trade-in credit (if applicable).

That does sound a bit scummy, but it's probably the avoid this exact situation (people trying to get rid of damaged phones to get a discount on new ones).

                • @Payne: yea, they should state that the phone is not given back. oh well it's only $70 could've lost way more

                  • +3

                    @jakepods:

they should state that the phone is not given back.

They do. Which is just one of the reasons why I don't understand why you expect it back.

              • @jakepods: Yes, that's all outlined upfront let alone in the T&C.

                • @apsilon: if you don't mind could you find where it states that the phone will not be returned

                  • -1

@jakepods: I take my other reply back. You're right, according to their T&Cs, both online and in person, you should get your phone back.

                    Online

6.2 (b): an In-eligible Device Fee if You return a device which is an In-eligible Device. Upon payment of Your In-eligible Device Fee, Your In-eligible Device will be returned to You.

                    In person

7.1 (c): …You may be charged an In-eligible Device Fee. Upon payment of Your In-eligible Device Fee, Your In-eligible Device will be returned to You.

In both cases, an In-eligible Device is defined as:

                    (b) is not a Good Working Order Device or an Acceptable Damaged Device.

So yes, you should get your device back. Quote these next time you contact them.

                    • @Payne: yes will do

                    • +6

@Payne: You're assuming the charge was for an in-eligable device. I believe it was a misgraded device from OPs own statements.

                      • +2

@apsilon: Yep, good point. The OP needs to tell us if they honestly described the device via the trade-up site. If not (i.e. they didn't describe the crack adequately), then yeah, doesn't look like they're getting the phone back.

Sounds harsh (but fair): the charge is essentially there to stop people wasting their time.

                    • @Payne: Yes, if he pays the fee. That's the choice the OP has. Abandon the device, or get it back by paying the fee they charge for finding it was ineligible and mis-described and sending it back.

                  • @jakepods: I'm not going to read the T&C for you. I suggest you read them, obviously for the first time.

                    • @apsilon: i did. it said i should get my phone back

                      • @jakepods: Where does it state that?

                        • @apsilon: read payne's comment

                          • @jakepods: So the charge was shown as being for an in-eligable device?

                            • +1

@apsilon: just read the email again more closely. they said "its physical condition doesn't match the details entered when you completed your trade up." looks like my loss

                              • @jakepods: probably will just wait and see what happens when they call me back in 2 days

                                • +2

@jakepods: You are completely in the wrong here and your device will not be returned to you, it will only be returned if it is an ineligible device and you have stated that is not the case.

Did they value it at $70 based on what you stated and when they received it they revalued it at $0 because of the chip on the screen? because of this you think they have to give it back to you. They have administration, inspection costs etc already sunk into your device so why would they spend more money to return it to you when it is outside the T&C.

In your eyes it has been assigned a value of $0 but it will still have value to them when they recycle it for parts

  • The real question is why you actually sent your phone…

  • I'm so confused by this whole post.

Why on earth would you expect your phone back on a trade in program?

    Trade in definition:

"traded in; trading in; trades in. Definition of trade in (Entry 2 of 2) transitive verb. 1 : to turn in as payment or part payment for a purchase or bill trade the old car in on a new one. 2 : exchange sense 2."

So they reduced the price of the Flip and made up the difference with the trade in price of the iPhone. The only catch is they found the value of the traded in device to be $70 less than you specified because of indisclosed damage.

But you have a brand new Flip paid for patially by the trade in value.

Uhm - that's how trade in works? No you do not get to keep both. How can any logic deduce that?

  • This is why i stay far from Samsung!
