Ford Mondeo 2008 Aircon compressor issue

So I bought a 2008 Ford Mondeo here in WA last year. Unfortunately the aircon doesn't work, brought it to a local mechanics and it needs a new compressor :-( quote received was approximately $2,400 to replace with new compressor incl labour. It doesn't make sense to spend this on such an old car but with the current temperature hovering around 41C something has to give!

Looking to get people's thoughts on buying a secondhand compressor from ebay or gumtree? I realise there is no guarantee with this although one seller on Ebay gives a 12 month warranty. At this stage I haven't checked with any mechanics to see what the labour cost would be to install this, I know the place that quoted on the new one said they wouldn't be able to install a second hand one for me.

  • AliExpress?

  • If you take it to mechanics to install and still doesn't work after, what is your recourse? You going to blame the mechanics for workmanship?

Your only option is to install it yourself and deal with compressor seller if it is faulty. But then you need to defend that you have tested the compressor is indeed faulty on arrival.

So if you don't know how to install it yourself or test the compressor yourself, suggest you cop the price

  • Pick up a wrench, chuck on a youtube video and away you go.

Just depends how much you value your time and if you can have your car out of action for some time.

If it's an engine out jobby that would be the justification for the price. If not it sounds steep. Else just roll down the windows.

Individuals can't play with AC gasses in Australia. You could install the compressor but it's only a fraction of the total cost.

      • To install the compressor you'd need to recover the gas first, it's illegal to deliberately let it out into the atmosphere.

        • Yes agree with you, unless of course it's already leaked out entirely…

      • Sorry
Yeah you're right not exactly an easy DIY job

Some wreckers have mechanics who, for an extra fee, will install parts purchased from them, and also supply a warranty.

    Worth asking around.

It's a 14 year old Ford. I wouldn't sink any money into it for fear of something else going wrong and needing to put even more money into it. Just do it yourself for cheap (it will still need to be re-gassed) or leave as is.

Sell it and cut your losses.

      Sell in Winter.. haha

  • I wouldn't take it to the local mechanic.

Either take it to an auto electrician who usually can repair air conds.

Or jump on the Ford Mondeo Facebook group. Someone would have had the same issue and/or will be able to recommend someone local who has worked on these cars before.

Let them supply the reconditioned part, so if there are any issues with the part, it's their issue.

  • Isn't the Mondeo a bit of a lemon?

  • Use the 4-100 aircon

    • Works a treat. But I prefer 2-100 due to rear tyre noise.

  • Thanks for all the helpful comments. I have contacted a couple of wreckers that have second hand compressors and install for you as well just to see how much it would cost. I suspect it will be too much though!
Luckily for me I only really drive the car to the station and back so I may continue to use the 4-70 aircon ;)
