Looking for Ideas - Need $1k of Credit Card Spend (Can't Be Pending) to Avoid Monthly Fee

So signed up for a CBA card, and had my minimum $2.5k / month spends worked out prior.

Then CBA ended my statement in the first 2 weeks and it's thrown my spending pattern out as I expected another 2 weeks in this statement period.

Then throw in ole mate covid. I made a few payments over the phone .. which are still 'pending' and apparently dont count (assume someone was away and didn't process them straight away).

So I've now got 24 hrs and $1k short.

Was thinking of prepaying rates, water etc ..but think they will just go pending.

I need to take out an insurance policy…but would they go pending as well?

Any ideas for realistic instant transactions? Even refundable ones (as that would allow the pendings to slip through).

Buy $1000 worth of gift cards instore at Coles or Woolies for somewhere you shop regularly (probably Coles or Woolies).

Just be mindful that this will impact your CC spend for other months if you have budgeted for exactly $2.5k, because you'll need to use the gift cards at some point in the next few years.

If none of the forthcoming advice here suits, you can just give CBA a call and request that they waive your monthly fee.

Be honest and upfront, they're generally understanding and will hear you out. Everyone's been doing it tough lately, so go easy on yourself and don't stress too much!

Most credit transactions don't turn into an actual charge within 24 hours.

Just pay the fee, this card is not for you.

  • Get $1000 worth of tools from Bunnings then return them a few days later.

But it's likely any transaction will be pending for at least 24hrs as stated above.

    • I love this, I wonder how much bunnings hate it, I know the staff don't seem to give a s….

If you're renting - you can physically go to your real estate branch and pay your fortnightly rent via credit card + usual transaction fees (instead of direct debit via your bank account).

Go in and advance pay for future weeks/months.

Xfer actual cash back into CC before your interest days are up, or when your CC payment is due

  • Insurance likely won't work. Most won't charge your card until the cooling off period has passed.

  • Great tips from everyone. Much appreciated. I ended up contacting CBA via chat and they will waive the fee for this month if I get back to them. Technically spent $4k in 40 days, so CBA are still doing ok out of the deal.

    Cheers all.
