Steelcase Gesture without Headrest $1,319.20 or Leap V2 from $930.40 + Delivery ($0 Pickup at Arki) @ Arki Environments

221

Decent discount on the leapv2 and gesture. I am coming from a HM Mira. Buying one for working from home.

Looked at various second hand office furniture sites, but I'm keen for the warranty as it's only for the original purchaser. Aim to have it for 10-15 years so it's a good investment.

Leap for $930 is armless, price is $1092 with arms.
    (was $1040 in October)

    • +36

Sweet I’ll just go back in time to when I didn’t need a chair. Thanks bro.

      • -7

Using that logic even a sale of 1% when you need an item is a deal? RAT tests @ 30 bucks a pop when you need them is a bargain then lmao

The fact is they're cranking the prices higher and higher while maintaining cheap prices for corporate partners like Google and Telstra employees.

        • +2

From your logic, we should buy anything that is on sale even if we don't need it?

This is the cheapest I have found it for the last month.

        • +5

@frowny From your logic, I think you should buy this Airless paint sprayer

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/676901

Big discount, you may need it one day. Don't complain if someone links it a year later for a higher price cause you didn't get it now!

          • -1

@MrMoo: And if that Airless paint sprayer was $49 instead of $199 three or four times before that deal?

Same shit with Telstra and JB Hi Fi deals. $99 for 36 months, here have a $500 voucher. It's a deal for you right?

            • +4

@frowny: I guess you never plan to ever buy a house again then. Since they were like 50k a few decades ago.

              • @MrMoo: Who said anything about buying, we're talking about whether it's a bargain or not lmao

                • +4

@frowny: Yer and you are comparing to deals that were in the past. These no longer exist. If you live your life downvoting things because the price used to be cheaper, you are going to have a lot of things to complain about.

          • @MrMoo: Plus it also functions as a chair if you sit on it

        • Any idea how corporate partner employees can get a discount?

      • +3

$5 for your DeLorean when you're done take it or take it.

        • Forward to the past

got 3 with arm for $100 each from gumtree

    • Been looking for months and nothing. Can claim pre tax through work plus lifetime warranty seems good. These are new btw, not used by hundreds of sweaty bums.

    • Any more? Got a link? Would not mind a 2nd hand one for $100!

      • He got 20+ all gone in a couple of hours.

        Be careful of secondhand ones

I went to one on Facebook Marketplace, seller is "Budgetofficefurniture Sydney"

They list all their chairs as "mint condition" but they are far from it, I suspect they're dumpster divers at tips.

        • Lol I have been meaning to call them up about their leaps. So you had a look in person at their auburn warehouse/location?

I'm on the fence about buying the shiny platinum model or a second hand one at half the price.

          • +2

            @FiveDarrah:

Lol I have been meaning to call them up about their leaps. So you had a look in person at their auburn warehouse/location?

Yes, the location looks like a rubbish dump with a small maze to get into the "office" where there's an Indian guy always talking on his phone (I'm not being racist, it's just a fact).

Here is the google street view

If you know where MSY is located, it's on the corner of that building

I bought a steelcase leap from them (blue, $440), supposed to be steam cleaned as per advert

When I asked if its been sanitized, the Indian guy called out "hey bro, are you busy?" and this young Lebanese-looking guy in a high-vis shirt came out with a pink spray bottle and "cleaned" it in front of me (why do they need to clean it again if it's already sanitised?)

Anyway.. after I took the chair home, there was a smell from the cushion and I decided to take apart the chair to clean everything myself

After consulting youtube videos, I did take apart the chair and soaked the fabric and cushion in dettol, took ages to dry out. (4-5 days)
ALL the screws were rusted on the surface, which made me question my purchase, I'll try to find a photo for you

Photo of the steelcase leap metal piece underneath the chair
I cleaned off as much of the rust as I could with steel wool, but it wasn't a fun experience.

All the screws similarly had levels of rust (at least on the surface where you put a screwdriver in it)

What I did learn though, was the Steelcase Leaps are very very well put together

I suppose, if you are interested in buying secondhand furniture, take your time to inspect everything and don't impulse buy.

The wheel joints were fully jammed with long hair from previous users (which is fine, I swapped out the wheels for better ones anyway) but it just goes to show you should take "mint-condition" with a grain of salt.

Feels like I was trading with a guy at a flea-market willing to say anything to get the sale

            • @cwongtech: Thanks for sharing. I can see some people being ok with the rebuild/clean but $440 is way too much. Maybe if it was closer to $200-300 then it might be worth. I dont have that kind of time so i'll splash out on buying brand new.

                @FiveDarrah:

                Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome, I can't rate the seller on FB, but hopefully by sharing my experience (it's not defamation, just stating facts), hopefully others can form a better decision before going to this place.

I do have regrets, but I can't really turn back time.

Happy with my re-built/cleaned Steelcase Leap, but I did put a lot of time and effort into making it sanitary and usable

I dont have that kind of time so i'll splash out on buying brand new.

Yeah, it took me quite a few afternoons trying to dry it out..

Also the cloth is held onto the backseat and main cushion by staples (bunnings for a staple-gun)
Need an extremely hot day to dry it out properly.

$440 is way too much for what I had to go through (I do however have peace of mind that it's completely clean)

            • @cwongtech: I put the rollerblades on all my chairs - they are aweome and you can now get ones with LED lights inside!

NB dont get them for plastic bases the extra leverage can break them

Just bought Herman Miller Aeron before the price increase…..

    • That price increase made me lose a lot of respect for Herman Miller, was pretty shady

      • What was the reason for the increase?

        • +8

          because they want more money

    • Where did you buy?

    • +3

Holy balls. It was $17xx 1-2 weeks ago and is now $2120 delivered. WOW.

      • What are you serious mine was $800 in 2015 :oooooo
Had no idea the price went that mental.

    • I got the embody waiting to claim price protection. Returned it since it was hurting my back.

  • Near 15%… quite steep. It’s driven by local importer though and not by the brand itself

    • +5

I wanna punch he/she in the face

  • Thanks bought 10

  • This or the Aeron?

    • +2

At this price you have to try them in person.

    • +1

Both are very different chairs but can do the same job very well. I have used both, and like them both.

I will be buying a leap next as a task chair, it has better backrest angle control which does not exist on the aeron (classic). The backrest is at a fixed angle. You can tilt it back and forward but not lock it at any position.

The leap has a headrest option (overpriced) which doesn't seem very good, only adequate. The aeron does not have a headrest option but it does have a third party atlas headrest which is probably the best headrest on the market with good up/down and back/forward adjustment.

This combined with the nicer tilt/recline in the aeron means it's an awesome combo for home use, watching stuff and lounging. The leap is more of a task chair.

However in saying that, the aeron's design only fits one sitting position really - forward. You can't cross your legs or sit in weird positions, which you can with the leap. Which makes the leap a bit more versatile.

In the end I can't say which you'll like more, and even after trying them, you probably won't know. You gotta try each one for a few weeks to really get a feel for them.

I’m still using my old $120 jobbie from OW 10 years ago.

    • So was I, until I had to sit on it for 8 hours a day 5 days a week.

  • Has anyone tried this Flow Task Office Chair - Empire (empirefurniture.com.au)? It is at a much more affordable price.

    • Looks like another buro metro remake.

I bought two but now I'm sitting on a Steelcase leap 12 months later. So if you really need to sit at the computer desk for 8+ hours, i'd probably invest in a more expensive chair.

  • I feel like at this price I may as well just buy a Haworth Fern or support Australian and get a Buro Vela or Metro

    • -4

At that price you may as well just buy a padded folding chair.

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/padded-fol…

    • Haworth fern is brilliant had one for 6months now

      • I've been staring at the haworth fern after seeing the only solid review I could find online and I'm definitely considering it since everywhere has been putting it in the same tier as the embody

        • When I saw a few reviews and office works said I had 30 days to return if I didn't like It I tried and don't regret

Sitting on a yoga ball better than "ergonomic" chair

    • Said a random Facebook Person.

    • Don’t know why you are getting downvoted but there is truth to your statement

  • +1

Im currently sitting on one of these with headrest. genreally, it is a very good chair, but next time i will buy the aeron chair.

    • Yea it’s all very personal. I don’t like the fixed base of aeron or mira at all, can’t get comfortable. I prefer the backs and the leaning though.

  • I want to buy this but how can i try this? Is there any showroom in Sydney?

  • Anyone got a Leap V2 with headrest? looking at getting one, tossing up between this and a secret lab

    • My secret lab base pu leather has come off. Many at work have done the same. Wish I spent more now.

      • Interesting, i was looking at getting their alcantera fabric series, though I heard from people that they can be a bit hot.

    • +1

The headrest version is way too expensive, you're paying nearly $500 for a crappy little headrest with no adjustability. I think you can change the height very very slightly. There's a good video about it on BTOD (youtube).

I haven't used the leap with headrest but I have an aeron with atlas headrest, which is probably one of the best headrests around. It has 3 points of adjustment that let you position and angle it exactly where you want it, and easily change it depending on what you're doing.

If you're thinking of getting a chair you can lounge in (with a headrest or tall back) then the leap is probably not it. I also have a ricer chair and have used that instead of my aeron for lounging in (before I got the headrest). So I can see the appeal.

  • Just bought a gesture with this deal. Steelcase Au is also running a 20% off promocode right now which brings it to the same price. But they only deliver to Melbourne and Sydney. I’m in Brisbane and so was lucky to get this deal through Arki.
