Streaming, do you really need that much?

So I was just reading the Netflix gift card deal:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/677308

This got me thinking, how many services people have activate at a given time?

Use me as an example, Prime is pay for by Optus for now. I am still on special with Kayo($5), Jumped on the Disney+ deal to watch Shang-Chi and paid one full month now so I can watch Eternals.

Business Insider suggest on average each Australia subscribe to more than 2 steaming services (like me). My question is how people find time for all these content? I have a normal job and sleep well, eat well (which take up 80% of my day already). Assume most people are the same and not spend their entire spare 4 hours all in streaming. Then we obviously don't need that much subscription.

Do you keep your subscription so you can just get your content straight away? or you rotate your services throughout the year (and get deals….).

  • Does Prime count if you have it for shopping instead?

    • +1

Well yeah.. you have it to use right?

I do suspect many people just have prime by default and just use whatever they fell suitable……

But even yo don't count prime, lets say you have one subscription, there is so much content plus the free streaming ones. there is sure more than enough

I just puzzled when I see people have four or five😓😒

When you think of people in the past paying $50-$150/mth for foxtel/cable/satellite style channels, it's not much to have a couple of channels there.

My question is how people find time for all these content?

It doesn't necessarily mean people are watching more hours of content, but they have more content to choose from. It's like saying people have 16 channels of free to air, why do they need streaming at all? Sometimes you just want something on another channel.

Personally I have Prime anyway for free shipping. I have Netflix as my "always there" channel. I have Disney+ (yearly sub as it was just as economical as turning it on/off every couple of months), then I cycle through Stan/Binge and eny others (normally keep for 3 months then see something else and swap).

  • Do you keep your subscription so you can just get your content straight away?

Yep, and when split with others it's such a minimal cost that it's not worth trying to juggle, and gives everyone in the house free reign to pick what they want.

    When you can get
Netflix via turkey and split it up to 4 way
YouTube music via India and split it up to 6 wayz
Disney plus and split it 3 ways
Amazon prime (and get free prime video)

Likely all that costs less than a single Netflix local sub per month

    • I find it amazing when people are willing to share their account with strangers…

My work mate split accounts with her family which is fine but that is different story……

      • +1

        Who said strangers?

Currently all Family and friends, though have had YouTube music split between other Ozbargain users before as they aren't a 'shared' login

And it's stuff like Netflix, not exactly any top secret info being divulged there

    sleep well, eat well

Check out mr humble brag haha

    I don’t think I’ve slept/ate well in some years..

  • I have all of them, the most annoying things is because of the distribution of shows which is super frustrating.
I pay for Stan for one TV show which is no where else. Foxtel for HBO, music channels and sport. Hayu because my mums watches 2 reality TV shows they have. Disney because my niece wants cartoons and Pixar, Prime, well that’s for the free delivery for paper towel and other good deals, Netflix I get for free with my foxtel package. Paramount Plus, on the EPIC iOS deal for a year for $5!! :)
And your right, I hardly watch it and might get an hour or two for watching something. Luckily I just share my logins with my family so everyone always has something to watch.

  • Netflix for us, disney+ for the kids. Different type of contents (not that we dont enjoy the content in disney)

  • +1

I have Disney+ from 2 years and just watched Madgascar (all 3 parts) … Resurrection Ertugrul has consumed all of the time i had in Covid … What a treat to watch.

  • +2

I just rotate through the streaming services depending on what I want to watch. I will usually wait until there are a few shows I want to watch on the same service. Personally I don't care if I don't see a show/movie straight away.

  • Just cancelled Netflix as they wanted to up the cost next mth and there is jack sh*t on it I already haven't watched or don't like, as i have amazon prime (cheapest way to get free delivery plus some movies and can source better streaming content than nf etc free i'm set. OP might want to remember many ppl are not at work due to covid and have time to watch a lot of streaming

  • Got prime(free from mastercard) and apple+(free from PS5), and oh Paramount+ from that $6 for a year deal.

I usually only sub Disney+ or Netflix for a month every year to catch up. There's really no point in having so many subs active all the time.

Helps that I am very choosy with what I watch I guess.

Now, I watch Youtube for free :D I think most streaming services got a lot of B/C grade content (quality vs quantity), even 7plus, SBS on demand are better than Netflix etc.
I got CuriosityStream for a year (around $17 or so for the whole year) but haven't watched in a while.

I was thinking about getting Fetch TV Knowledge Pack for $6.00/mth but the initial cost of the STB is expensive.
Growing up, I was a huge fan of FTA TV (later even FTA satellite channels like NHK had free HD) which had much better content than some new streaming services.

  • Just find a sub that has all shows from all streaming services in one. About $5 a week. Keeps the SO and kids happy and the best bit no ads

  • Netflix is the biggest rip. I'd pay for Prime for free delivery anyway, but I use the Video a lot too. Disney Plus I need because there's always some new Star Wars or other big hyped thing on there. For more exotic streaming services like Paramount Plus I'd rather find more creative ways to watch those shows/movies.

  • Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus here. Total cost is ~$35 a month at a guess.

Netflix is primarily for the wife and I. Amazon is primarily for the free shipping. Disney Plus is primarily for the kids.

Have considered Kayo on an off ever since it came along, but never subscribed.

  • $15/month for a seedbox

    • +2

Plus your time to maintain it🤣🤣

Oh don't forget in case the law caught up with you then you have to price in many other consequence like getting into jail and have you forbidden area forcefully explored by inmates🤮🤮

      • -1

I bet I spend less time maintaining it than you do searching Netflix for something worth watching 😂

        • if you read my post then you can see that I am not a Netflix customer yet 🤣🤣

        • don't you need to maintain your ratio on trackers? Or just a seedbox for public trackers?

  • Netflix (Turkey) - Not bad alround, best with VPN to access wider selection of shows especially during lockdown
Amazon Prime - More for the products than the streaming service
IPTV ($100pa) - Good for live sport and documentary channels. Ok for ondemand TV Series & Movies & plenty of other stuff

    • You mean make in China android box like unblock tech? I though those box you pay a one off fee to buy the box and apps will work till the company go bust like TVpad.

      • For IPTV you can use Android or PC, not sure about Mac. Its essentially a service you pay a subscription for and it gives you access to like 10k+ Tv channels, and thousands of movies/tv series, which you access via various apps with a login & password. Friends of mine have the China android box, which is similar but much more limited with content.
