New nbn HFC Provider and Router Recommendations

Hi there,

I have been with TPG forever, current setup after switching to TPG HFC is their free router with a Tenda mesh network for a two story house. Router sits all the way to one end of the house.

Thinking of getting a new router or 2 if mesh is needed and looked into Xiaomi ax1800 / ax3000. Realise comments here about needing to hack VLAN tagging to get TPG to work…

My question is which ISP will not need me to hack a router to use it? I might just switch to that ISP altogether. (Brissy based)

Just want a plug and play solution. What about the Huawei ax3 compare to the Xiaomi?

Is there any other recommendations on router? Not looking to spend a fortune on router :)

Will be buying overseas model, not bothered by the language, apart from that anyone here experience any other limitations with the Chinese models?

Thanks heaps.
Busy dad of 2 that cannot keep up with tech after AC wifi

Telstra/Belong, Superloop, Aussie BB, Launtel, Mate.

Have personally used Superloop & Aussie BB can recommend both of them with their Australian customer service.

From last I remember, waited quite a bit longer for customer service with Superloop that was over a year ago.

  • can you reposition your Tenda Mesh network so they can talk to each other.
Ensure that your main unit is as close to your main living area, and upstairs Satellite unit can be situated more centrally on the top floor, (central to the bedrooms)

I am using a 3piece Netgear NightHawk MK83 set up in my 2 story home. I have my main unit under the stair, (central to the ground floor, then the first satellite in the main living area (rear of home), which is adjacent to the alfresco, and the 2nd satellite on the Kids retreat (front of home, top floor). Coverage is fantastic!

    • My main router is stuck where my hfc modem is unless I route cables.

Main living area is upstairs, mesh is giving me good coverage, I am unsure if newer routers will give me better internet speed.

I forgot to mention my aim is to get a faster wireless local network as well.

      • What speed are your getting with your current mesh?

      • Faster wifi is usually achieved by proximity to the AP. Mesh networks help by having multiple AP around the home.

Wifi 6 is even better allowing more devices and faster transmission, but keep in mind that the majority of your traffic will all be capped at the same speed as your NBN link. ie. the wifi link might show 600Mpbs, but your NBN is only serving internet at 50Mbps

  • Have used tangerine and super loop. Super loop customer support is super slow to reach. Like some times 2hrs wait. Drop outs once a week . Need to restart the router. Tangerine on the other hand was fantastic in every way. Would def recommend tangerine. On superloop currently due to their offer. Tangerine has free static ip on 100 plans.

  • Have had Superloop last two years without any hitches or issues (Canberra based), switched connection over within minutes and have had consistent speeds without dropouts. Have heard of customer support being a little slow to respond but ive honestly never had to make contact with them since the initial connection.
