I have one of these generic pulse oximeters. I tested it against an expensive oximeter and my fitbit. It seems to be pretty accurate.
The real question is how accurate it is outside of the normal range of 97-99%. That’s where the real accuracy matters and they could have just programmed it to always show somewhere along 97-99% and that would almost be spot on in most people.
How to test that?
By getting a really bad case of Delta.
People who probably have oxygen below 95% at least some of the time: smokers, asthmatics with moderate asthma who haven't used any medication, people with unaddressed sleep apnea (only while asleep).
Edit: and of course, people with covid who are having a bad time.
Hold your breath for a minute or two and you can watch your % fall to low 90s. Usually will happen a few seconds after you run out of breath and have to breathe again.

Good or cheap? Not a lot of independent data to support the accuracy claims of the cheap ones, let alone the generic no name ones on eBay etc. Of the few small scientific tests on effectiveness of cheap non-medical grade PO devices the CONTEC cms50dl did well. I'd assume their newer CONTEC models (better screens) are as accurate but who knows.
If you are trying to find if Covid is lowering your oxygen level it doesn't need to be super accurate, it just needs to be trustworthy. If you see you've gone from your normal 97-99 range to 90-94% for no obvious reason, it's done it's job.
This one was fairly accurate and cheap but they no longer stick it (zacurate pro series 500dl)

My relative who is a doctor in overseas recommends Beurer brand, Germany made. It's not cheap though.
