DIY Charcoal Basket Mesh Grate

I use an old square pot for grilling which is roughly (max) 30x30cm internal opening. To try keep a long story short, I want to play it safe long term and replace the current mesh that's inside, which is galvanised iron/zinc, with something a bit less controversial food safety wise. For those wondering it's one of those Daiso cooking grates.

Anyway before shopping and forking out for branded charcoal baskets, wondering if anyone has any OzB inspirations to do the same thing on the cheap. Price to beat is $20 :P

I thought about making a chunky aluminium sheet by folding an aluminium tray or twoand extra foil then poking/drilling some holes but I have a feeling it won't last many cooks.

To clarify, I am talking about the layer or tray thing that holds the burning lump/briquettes, not the cooking surface

  • According to wiki "Charcoal burns at temperatures exceeding 1,100 degrees Celsius". Not sure of course how hot yours will be, but aluminium is liquid at 700

  • Mate, just get the bunnings one - I did. It's built pretty solid, consistent design and is thick enough. You could make one yourself but given how long these things last for and effort, time and materials required, Id just spend the $20 and spend your newfound time grilling!

  • What about a cheapie SS rack from AliExpress? Maybe I can find one to go with the cashback later.

There is one there that's almost perfectly sized and bonus it's got feet to raise it up slightly. But I've read chromium isn't that great either when talking heat, or is that only talking about plating rather than solid SS?
