Can't see the value at $800 barebones. There are lenovo laptops with that processor for $150 more (+screen, ram, storage).

    • I suspect its all about volume. Lonovo would be able to move so many more of their laptops so bulk ordering everything at a discount in comparison to this mini pc. They have their place, I have one (different brand) and they're great for certain uses.

Mini-PC has particular use cases (multi-media, multiple displays, etc.) but for me, I just like the form factor and I am reusing existing storage and display so the upgrade cost is reasonable, especially after I sell my old Intel NUC. It makes for a very clean setup (I mount it at the base of my monitor arm) with no wires on the desk.

      • Agreed. I have the Minisforum HX90 as a work PC. I'm self-employed and work in different roles so that particular PC only handles 1 of those roles. Currently, my main PC handles the other roles + gaming. But later I'll have a mini-pc designated to each task, independent to each other for security reasons + versatility. Do I need mini-pcs for these tasks? Of course not but who wants multiple desktops on and under the desk or around the house and I don't want 1 PC handling everything. These things can hide behind the monitor, under the desk, wherever really. And with a good KVM switch, it's perfect.

    • Headless home assistant or other small form factor server

  • In this case what does barebones mean?
You need ram and an ssd, what else in the case is needed?

    • Just RAM and SSD plus Windows of course.

      • Thanks.

  • What is the cheapest NUC/Mini PC available now?

    • If you start going too cheap you get crap for your money, dodgy old celeron CPU's with 8GB soldered RAM etc. But those can be had for around $300 if that's your cup of tea. For certain applications they'd still be fine of course, I just wouldn't want to buy >5yr old tech for any price brand new.

    • Something like this for a complete ready to go system for $400. Ok for basic web and student use. But you get what you pay for, so forget gaming or any moderate to heavy use out of it.
Upgrading it isn't really worth it either. It's basically a low end laptop without the screen or battery.

      • Surely an older dell optiplex or something would be way better value. Unless mini is a requirement.

Well, the Cubi is new, and comes with a warranty and support, vs a ~5-7 year old Dell. And the Cubi would use less power. And he did ask for a NUC/Mini PC.

If they needed to ask the question, then I assumed they were not really into finding a leaking capacitor on the motherboard, or finding and updating drivers that stopped with WinXP, so troubleshooting a problem on a 7 year old Dell might be issue.

Sure, you can pick up a Dell for a couple of hundred about the same performance, but you're also giving up manufacturer/dealer support and updated drivers etc.
