I did not miss the camera deal … but now I need a lens deal !!!

Me too… Bought the last deal, but after having to buy new CFexpress cards my wallet is in tatters. Best to give it a breather

I just got an EF adapter and the old lenses work very well on the R5! After watching lots of YouTube videos and reading comparisons I will keep my old EF glass for some time. Feels like they just doubled the prices of the new RF mount lenses - so a good deal to keep just old EF lenses and use them.

        • good to know, love my 90D, but it's the end of the line for Canon DSLR's, wondering if I should cash it in now and jump to full frame mirrorless…probably go the R6 if I did…then I could get the most use out of the 24-70 IS L, which would be perfect for so much of my still and video work…

Really need a good deal on some CFExpress cards :/

        • I bought just one 128GB San Disk for $230 -10% cashrewards/shopback and lots of SD cards. I use the CFEXpress card slot as my secondary slot (JPG backup) and use the SD cards to shoot RAW. I know it's intended to be the other way round … but it's much cheaper this way!

  • My $1200 camera doesn't help me take good enough photos, will this work?

(I wish I could spend more money on photography, but once you add lenses it's mind bendingly expensive sadly)

Yes, gear is everything: buy buy buy!

In all seriousness and without knowing which camera you have gear shouldn't define the photo outside of technical photography. Some of my favourite photos have been taken with old phones, not just for the moment but for the lighting, composition, scene, etc.

      • yeah i concur with this. Like expensive utensils doesn't make someone to be a good cook. But a good cook and use anything to brew up a good dish, :)

        • Haha- it was a bit of a joke about gear byers. On one hand, I understand the camera is not my limiting factor, though I do enjoy buying and using stuff. Using nicely made stuff is pleasing I find, even if not completely needed.

    • Depends what camera you have. An old Canon 5D III will do the trick to get you some amazing shots - pair this with a cheap 50mm F1.8 and 85mm F2.0 and you are set to go. It's understanding light, composition and having the feel for the moment and anticipating what will happen … even a newish iPhone can take amazing shots.

      • I know, I should have included the /s after my comment hahah

Although I would really like a good low light lens and a new macro lens. I'm finding most of the chances I get to take photos are in poor light, so a brighter lens would definitely help

        • Flash/Lights … or something 1.2 or 1.4 … or better body for better ISO … or tripod.
Depends on what you shoot :-) And we still don't know your 1200 camera :-).

        • try pushing the ISO and use a denoise program like topaz for starters. what camera is it? $1200 is plenty for a very capable camera.

      • even a newish iPhone can take amazing shots.

Even an old iPhone 6 can still take incredible shots. Remember the, "Shot on iPhone" campaign?

        • Haha … in my world an iPhone 6 is newish. But I guess the camera really got great from iPhone 8 onwards.

          • @mini_wombat: The iPhone 8 introduced 4K 60fps so that's fair. Honestly, the dual cam system in the iPhone 7 plus was a bigger improvement than the 4K 60fps in the 8 series.

            • @Zackeroo: True. I had only the normal iphone7 - and from version 8 I felt the biggest step up in quality. Never looked at the plus versions of the phone - but agree the 7plus had already a great camera. It's amazing what these little things can do.

The right moment, the people, the light & mood, etc are what you need for photography.
You only need the minimum required gear with your skill to capture that for a good photo.

The better the gear, the less chance you miss that precise moment by wrong setting.
Without that but gear only, it is just nothing.

  • Camera cashback is 0% ?

    • You're right - cheers for the heads up! Edited now.

It is cheaper to buy from Digidirect, same price but have 4% shopback cash back.

  • Is this a worthwhile upgrade from my Praktica L? lol

  • Is this the new standard price (excluding the cash back)? Would love to buy new gears but still too expensive, especially when I go out less to take photo. I have kids now so less time to do photography.

I will keep my Canon 5D Mark IV for now.

    • I'm hoping so. Apparently a more video-focused R5c is on the way which might drop down the price on this.

Unless you're looking for video features (or insanely high MP count) your 5D will still be fantastic for years to come.

No doubt the 5D is a very capable camera which is why I am not in a hurry to replace. The R5 appeal to me because of the smaller size but at the same time I am not sure the 100g weight difference will be noticeable.

Furthermore investment for RF lense is costly if I don't want to use adaptor.

The new $5,055 price is tempting for those in the market to upgrade. But I will wait till it drop to $3,000. Which may very well be never

    • I have kids now so less time to do photography.

Many people justify kids/family as the reason for getting better cameras/lenses. Os so they told their partners LOL.
I doubt we will see big discounts on popular cameras during 2022/23 due to global chip shortage. Sony cited that reason for suspending production of their A7c (probably why they have not done any sale/rebate on that one) and a few other models in their lineup.

      • Didn't even think about the chip shortage, glad I bought my camera during boxing day sales.
