Decent Knife Block Set for a Amateur Home Cook

I'm looking for a basic knife block set including shears for a amateur home cook hosting friends over the weekend. Any ideas if the Kamati Classic range is good?

Comparing it to the WÜSTHOF Gourmet range which is stamped and apparently not that great? Any suggestions welcome cheers.

Go Japanese get global they range from $300+

    • Second this

      • Third this

Or build from the ground up.

  • The OzB knifeset of choice seems to be any of the Global range.

Do not buy at RRP though - the day-to-day price is about 50% off RRP, but there's often even better deals.

Please for the love of god stay away from Baccarat.

I have no idea why people even buy that crap.

+1 for Global. I have the Ikasu set and it is quality for price. Picked it up for like 240-250 on a deal here.

  • After trying a number of brands over the years and never being really happy with any of them I followed the advice of more experienced users here and purchased a set of Global knives and wish I'd purchased them years ago.

They aren't cheap, but they are quality.

Shop around OP as prices can vary widely.

Honestly - The Ikea knife range is pretty great value - I was seriously impressed with them and have been using one of the Santoku knives as my "daily chopper" for the last couple of years. Hold their edge reasonably well. Like others have said the global range is quite good - and a bit more "showy" than an ikea knife.

Be careful of the higher end Japanese knifes like the Shun - whilst you can get an incredibly sharp edge, its also very easy to blunt or chip them and they can lose their edge much faster.

Equally as important as the knifes is get yourself a decent whetstone, as well as the honing rod - no matter what you buy any knife will lose its edge. You want to be able to get it back to that new-knife feel.
The argument for forged vs stamped also becomes less relevant if you're able to quickly hone and sharpen your knives rather than having to get them professionally sharpened.

  • Quality knives will usually tell you about the steel type and hardness. Probably just want to stick to one of the main brands (global, whustof, henckels zwilling, etc.). Figuring out if you want Japanese or German steel. If I was looking at a knife at the moment I'd probably get a henckels euroline. You maybe better off purchasing individual knives.

    quality set for same price

Don’t get a block. You only need a normal cooks knife, maybe a bread knife (serrated), and maybe a cleaver

Knives are only good if you take care of them

Go with a Victorinix the upgrade

  • i would recommend wustof for sure or go with victorinox :)

I've had good success with Furi, good quality relatively inexpensive.

Personally I like knifes with a wooden handle and would recommend Baccarat Damashiro Emperor Mokuzai 7 Piece Knife Block.

I do own some global knifes but would not recommend it because of the holes in the handle.

To complete your set I would also get a nice sharpening stone.

I would also suggest buying a separate shears scissors from the set if absolute necessary.

    Low cost: Victorinox or Furi

    Middle: Global

Higher: Wustof , Koi, Shun, Yaxell

Don't buy a set, just get a Chefs knife, a paring, bread knife if you need it, and a sharpening steel. Go from there.

If you aren't going to regularly look after them, and just want an everyday cut and throw in the drawer knife, stick to Victorinox, tonnes of chefs use these everyday. If you want to use the higher end knives, read up on how to use, store and maintain them or you will regret it.

  • … hosting friends over the weekend

You need to spend hundreds on knives for hosting on a weekend?

  • I used to be a Chef. See if you can get a Victorinox set somewhere. Pretty good quality. Will last you for years.
