nbn HFC Deals with 4G SIM Backup

Firstly after 20+hr without internet (apparently NBN are investigating a power issue). And having a 5hr outage 2 days ago, I realise I probably need a RSP with SIM backup as we're both doing WFH.

Firstly I assume it's only the big 3 (Telstra, Optus & Voda) who provide 4g failover? Or are there others?

Any good deals around for for these RSP's? I don't really want to sign up for 2+yrs I'm after the 100/40 plan (currently I pay $90/mth)

Lastly I assume I can put the supplied router into bridging/modem mode & the failover will still work?

All help appreciated.

  • Those are the only ISPs with auto 4G failover and none of them offer 100/40 to new signups.

Aussie BB, Launtel, Superloop, Future BB, Mate offer 100/40 without 4G failover.

Nah you don't put the ISP router in bridge mode. Plug in the router to the nbn NTD and leave it as default.

    • Hmm i wonder why they killed the 100/40 plans I'm not convinced 20 up is sufficient when uploading quite large files.

don't put the ISP router in bridge mode. Leave it as default.

I want it in bridging mode…i have a decent Asus router+mesh system, RSP's router wifi won't reach most of the house. But i wanted to make sure bridging mode won't affect the 4g failover.

      • 100/20 costs less for an ISP and now ISPs can push those on HFC and FTTP onto 1000/50 and 250/25 to make more money.

nbn NTD—-ISP router—-Asus configured as Wi-Fi access points.

If you want to keep your Asus setup as it is make your own 4G failover.

      • +1

I put Huawei e5573 into my Asus router. Pop in cheap Sim when there is an outage. I don't have mesh, but don't see why that would be an issue.

  • I do have Telstra HFC connection at my home, paying $110/pm for 250/20. Originally meant to be 100/20, but got a free upgrade during pandemic that has been going for months now. Yes, for large file uploads, 40Mbps will come in handy but for everyday use (we are 2 people working from home) 20Mbps handles absolutely fine.

On your other question about the bridged mode, I have also connected Telstra's modem to my Asus router (for the same reason, better coverage around my house) and it just picked up automatically without the need for me to do any special configuration (you just need to switch off the wifi in the Telstra modem). So it definitely works but however, when the connection drops, 4G switchover will work only if the smart modem is handling the connections (just disconnect the Asus modem and turn the wifi back on in the Telstra modem). It is a bit painful but glad it doesn't happen often, so happy to live with it.

  • If you are a bit tech-savvy, you may build your NBN connection with 4G Failover.

I use UDM Pro and it has two WAN port - I believe any premium router should have dual wan set up, either via second WAN port or USB port to share the USB modem connection.
I purchased an Optus 5GB SIM-only plan (I think it was $7.5 per month for the first 12 months, then $15 afterward, running on limitless data). I then set up a 4G router from my old Vividwireless modem then plug it into my WAN to, via SFP to RJ45 module.

So I am currently running on Superloop with Optus 4G backup. I can change the plan to Telstra but I need to change the modem as the old Vividwireless modem is Optus 2300Mhz locked.

  • Cheers, how'd you get the Optus plan?
I have got a 4g modem/router I could use, but I didn't want to have to pay another $30-$40/mth on top

  • if it's short term why complicate things, just get a spare prepaid sim to burn through the data whilst waiting for your nbn to be fixed

    • and invest in a decent router that support 4g dongle, don't rely on telco router because it sucks

      • ??? So buy & activate a new sim everytime there's an outage? Or what plan would you recommend?

    • Because I don't want to have to buy, activite a new sim everytime it goes down, because that is a PITA. When it goes down, how long does it go down for? Yes it's been down 33 out 48hrs now, other times its down 5mins, 20mins, 1hr.

      • I said short-term, if your nbn is unreliable to the point of multiple drop out a month then best to stick with rather expensive Telstra, they have automatic switching to mobile broadband in their new router.

      • I think you can also connect your phone to Asus routers. Maybe phone for short downtime.

If you don't want to activate Sims occasionally, buy a data Sim that lasts a year.

        • Cheers, yeah i saw the Officeworks $125 12mth 200gb Vodafone deal. So I might go down that path for a bit until the big 3 come up.with a better offer. I have a 4g modem which I'm now using. I just don't want to buy & activate a new sim every month. I thought maybe Telstra/Optus/Voda might have a deal out I hadn't seen. I'd rather pay $10-$20/mth extra for 4g backup.

56hrs and still no NBN in the area.

    • problem with that is the the sim expiration date
