just bought this before coming to OzB!

for those wanting a high endurance microSD card to pair with it, the 128GB Sandisk is half price @ ~$30 - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07NY23WBG

    • -2

Save $15 and get the smaller one. There's no reason to have a bigger SD card.

      • +4

the capacity is linked to endurance, so a 128GB card has twice the rated hours of a 64GB card

also means the larger cards will have more slack space for recording as protected event clips build up over time (unclear if Sandisk cards use wear leveling, unlike say the WD Purple)

  • +2

How's the install on this, easy to do yourself with little experience?

    • +1

yes - hardest part is routing the cable behind trim (if you don't want to use the included clips)

mine is replacing an old Navman that got cooked by 5 years of Aussie sun, so I've already got the miniUSB cable there, should be just stick & adjust the lens

EDIT: the hardwire kit (optional extra) is more involved, but this applies to almost all dashcams that don't have a larger battery bank

      • +3

True, it's not that hard once you've got your first time down pat. Plenty of YouTube videos on the matter. Just stick the cable under the roof liner and make its way across, then take the weather rubber seal off and snake the cable down to go near the driver/passenger footwell and around to the cigarette lighter.

Can also remove the A pillar for the tidiest install, but not everyone is comfortable doing that. It's not that hard honestly.

        • +4

          Any recommendations for YouTube videos?

          • +3

@catbarf: I used this one, and didn't hardwire, just ran it down tucked behind the A-pillar trim (push it in all the gaps), through the fuse box cover on the side of the dashboard, behind the steering wheel secured with the clips, and between the dash & transmission tunnel up to the cigarette lighter.

It's really easy to get it completely concealed. Just remember to have the camera sensor in front of a part of the windshield that isn't blocked by your car's driving assistance cameras, and in the area cleaned by the wipers.

Also note that infotainment USB ports might be powered for a while after the ignition is off, especially in cars with a start/stop button.

    • I just installed this in my corolla. It isn't perfect, but the cabling is neat enough. Only took about 5 minutes and some creative placement. Larger cars might need more creative routes.

      • Can you please share a video how you done it in 5 mins?

    • +1

If you are just keen to use it while the vehicle is running, then installation should be straightforward plug and play. Watching some YouTube videos on how to conceal wiring behind the trim etc. would be bonus and can be a DIY job depending on your comfort level. Need to beware of your airbags' locations and avoid those areas. However, if you are keen to opt for the hardwire mode, I'd say it's best to seek some professional help if you aren't familiar with fuse system on your car.

    • +3

Just make sure not to run the wire across the side airbag.

  • +1

These run batteries or caps? Don't want to bother with a battery powered one in the Aus sun.

    • No battery, requires accessory power if you need to run it while parked. Otherwise cigarette lighter does the job.

The build quality is very good for the money

      • Yep build quality is pretty good for the price.

      • +2

Lol, not really what he was asking. But theses run on super capacitors

        • Yeah not at all what I was asking, but thanks for answering yourself.

    • +3

Caps. I have a 5 year old A119 V2 still going strong, car is parked in full sun all day every day.

      • v3 feedbacks not so reliable after a year

      • +1

        Cheers.

  • +3

Hope new cars will have built-in cameras in the near future.

    • They have.. just an expensive option.

    • +4

Or at least usb port behind the rear view mirror like some cars today. Very handy!

    • The Tesla models have this, you plug storage into the usb in the glovebox and recordes everything from every angle of the car while driving/parked from its built in cameras.
      Very cool.

  • does this have real time speed display and alert?

    • it does , but for speed display you need the GPS plugin

      • Where can you get the plugin and how much does cost?

        • +2

This one has it, liok for GPS included in descriptions. The GPS is in the mount and the power connects into it. The camera connects to the GPS mount.

          • @PerthectDeal: Now I regret even more not getting it 🥲

            • @Mistredo: It will come up again,, at least within a few months.
My whole family have Viofo dash cams, always got them at a great price waiting for a deal on Ozbargain.
Also to add alll are still working perfectly since purchasing the first Viofo A118C in June 2016

              • @PerthectDeal: I actually do have a freezing issue - not sure what the cause it- it happens once maybe 3-4 months - after that it gets stuck, I have to factory reset it
it turns on and half the screen is garbage when its in that state

                • +1

@dshamim: Not good certainly sounds failty, especially if you have to factory reset it..
When did the fault occur after you brought it?

                  • @PerthectDeal: I noticed it maybe after a year of purchase -
point to note, I had a low power cell charger that I was using to power the cam as well, when I conencted my phone to it, and if it drew more power it would constantly restart the cam (every 7-10 minutes) - that may have caused some permanent problem - when it started to freeze, on second time, I upgraded my charger

but I have since then upgraded to a charger that has enough amperes to power my phone and the cam - but problem persists

  • +4

Have bought 2 of these from sales here.. WOULD NOT recommend. Check all the forums, even with the latest firmware and legitimate SD cards, it has a freezing issue. Unreliable at best especially when you need it most.

Otherwise, features are excellent.. been on the fence with upgrading to the A129 because of the freezing bugs I have with the 2x A119v3 I have.

    • What kind of SD cards did you use? high endurance ones?

      • 128Gb Samsung Pro Endurance, 64Gb Samsung Evo+, 128Gb Lexar Hugh Endurance U3/V30

        • +1

I should also note, that the boot freezes happen whether there is an SD card or not so definitely not a card issue as those are also verified genuine.

And the issues floating around on forums indicate that these are batch-based hardware issues as clearly, not everyone has these problems. the 2x I have were purchased almost 2yrs apart.

    • +3

I've installed two of these since purchasing during black friday sales and have not had a single issue with either one. Using endurance micro sd,

    • Only issue I've ever had with dashcams is when I've used non high wishes l endurance cards. Constantly corrupts the card. Since using high endurance, not one problem.

But that's a general dashcam issue, not specific to viofo.

  • +2

If you don't need the GPS attachment, there is this one from ebay for $119 (or $109 when using THANKSPLUS21)

  • Anyone spotted any deals recently for the a129 plus duo?

  • Does this have front parking sensors?

  • How's the glare? I have a cheap one that just would not die =) and while it's ok'ish, there is a lot of glare from the windscreen

    • +1

Viofo sells lens to get rid of glare. It’s a must buy for the same reason you mentioned. Somehow they didn’t increase the cost of the kit by $5 and included it so it has to be a separate purchase.

      • Yeah, extra $27

      • +1

Do you have a link to the filter?

  • +4

Would rather the 70mai front and rear for $118 over this.

    • $116.98 at Amazon

      • That doesn't include the rear facing camera.

    • +1

The 70mai has a battery - with the weather (extreme temps) we have here in Australia, you'd be better served with a cam that uses a capacitor, such as the VIOFO.

      • +3

Personally i've never had an issue with a battery powered dashcam in any of my cars so it's a moot point for me. Others may feel differently.

    • Sadly, the video quality is not that great based on YouTube reviews.

  • -1

DDpai Nola N3 $90 (AUD) through AliExpress

  • Irrespective of this model, i can vouch for Viofos after sales support is top notch

  • +1

I have an A119v3 and an A119S and not issues with either. One in the car, other for my work vehicle. Run the work one off a 20000mAh power pack and suction cup mount them so I can change between cars if I need to. Only thing I'd recommend is getting the polarising filter as it cleans up the image. I use a 256Gb SanDisk Extreme SD card and that stores around 12 hours of driving time before the oldest video gets overwritten.

  • Will the amazon promotional credit work for this purchase?

    • +1

From Oculus deal? No. Must be sold by Amazon and this one is sold by Viofo.

      • Do you know a way to display all the product sold by Amazon? I have difficulty finding items sold by Amazon au. Thanks

  • Unfortunately, there is no wifi option in this type. Only Plus have it from memory.

  • mine arrived & just installed - super easy and everything one might need for an unconcealed install

I also like how the 12v cig socket charger is the kind that has 2xUSB ports instead of a hard-wired 12V to USB cable

  • +1

for those who missed out - back on sale, but higher price at $138.12
