20x Flybuys Points with Purchase of Apple Gift Cards (Excluding $20 Cards, Max 45000 Points Per Account) @ Coles (In-Store Only)

1940

The latest gift card deal from Coles (taken from the upcoming VIC Metro weekly catalogue), where you will have 10% of the Apple gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Flybuys points.1

This deal can be stacked with the ongoing Free / Discounted AirPods deal at Apple.

Please check the packaging of each gift card for evidence of tampering. One OzBargainer has reported some Apple gift card packages at a Coles supermarket being tampered, where the sheet with the gift card code is removed and replaced with a sheet with a (most likely used) gift card code.

Deal terms and conditions

  • A limit of 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account applies. Offer valid only at Coles Supermarkets (excludes Coles Online, Coles Express and purchases via giftcards.com.au), subject to store availability.

  • Excludes $20 Apple Gift Cards.

  • To qualify for this offer you must present your Flybuys card at the time of purchase. Whilst stocks last, no rainchecks. Offer valid from 05/01/22 to 11/01/22.

  • BONUS POINTS can be awarded more than once for each Gift Card type including different denominations of the same Gift Card but up to a maximum of 45,000 points can be collected per Flybuys account.

Additional notes:

  • This deal is not available at Coles Local, Coles Express, Coles Online or Coles Group’s dedicated gift card website.

  • 2000 Flybuys points is equivalent to $10 of Flybuys Dollars (redeemable at participating retailers) or 1000 Velocity Frequent Flyer points.

  • This deal is for 19x bonus points per $1 spent on Apple gift cards in addition to the 1x standard point per $1 spent on Apple gift cards that you can earn every day.

  • Points earned at Coles are usually credited around 4:30pm Sydney/Melbourne time on the day after the transaction. However, there have been cases recently where Flybuys points were only credited a few days after the transaction.

Do you have another question regarding this deal? The answer may be in the FAQ page!

  1. The 10% calculation assumes you opt to redeem your Flybuys points for (1) an instant $10 discount at Coles (available to Coles Financial Services customers only), (2) Flybuys Dollars or (3) a range of gift cards on the Flybuys Rewards Store

Hate to re-hash the debate, but roughly what percentage discount does this work out to of the cards?

    • +9

You’ll get 10% of the gift card’s value returned to you in the form of Flybuys points. (I’ll add that to the deal description.)

That is assuming you opt to redeem your Flybuys points for:

      • +1

So basically, you get 9.09% off (i.e. $110 value for $100 spend).

        • +4

Yes, unless you are a Coles Financial Services customer and opt to redeem 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount when you are purchasing an Apple gift card. In that case, the maths gets more complicated…

          • +1

            @WookieMonster:

opt to redeem 2000 Flybuys points for a $10 discount

Even you have more than 1 multiple of 2000 FB points, you are only allowed to redeem a single multiple, right?
That seems so bloody stingy, and counterintuitive.

            • +3

@DoctorCalculon: Correct, the system will only let you 1x 2000 Flybuys points per transaction.

Another downside I’ve just realised is that the $10 instant discount is a discount, and Flybuys usually calculates the number of points you’ll earn based on the amount spent after taking into account any discounts.

For example, if you are purchasing a $30 Apple gift card and opt for a $10 instant discount, Flybuys will see that you spent $20 (after discounts), so you’ll probably only get 400 points for the $30 Apple gift card (or maybe 590 points). I don’t think you would get the full 600 points, as I know for a fact that if you opt for the $10 instant discount on groceries, you will earn 10 less points than you’d expect.

              • +2

                @WookieMonster:

For example, if you are purchasing a $30 Apple gift card and opt for a $10 instant discount, Flybuys will see that you spent $20 (after discounts), so you’ll probably only get 400 points for the $30 Apple gift card, not 600 points.

Thank you for this detail. Like I said, totally stingy.

        • +1

But your not counting the fact you generate additional points on what you spend with flybuys points.

Spend $1000 on gift cards, get bonus $100, get something for free for $100, put the saving towards another $100 gift card, get another 2000 bonus points or $10. So in the end you got $1110 from $1000 spend.

This doesn't even count targeted points boosters that you can activate in the app when you spend the flybuys dollars.

      • +2

Thanks - is waiting for 15% a go or is 10% the standard now?

        • +8

Good things come to those who wait

        • +10

Considering bonus points on Apple gift card deals happen approximately once a month at Coles, Woolworths or BIG W, I would only pull the trigger if:

          • Flybuys is your preferred loyalty programme, or

          • You are purchasing an item (or items) within the next month from Apple, or

          • You are purchasing an item (or items) within the next couple of months from Apple and you want to use Coles gift cards to pay for Apple gift cards (which is only possible in some circumstances).

I suspect a 30x points promotion will be back in the future, but it may be a few months before we see another one. The reason I say that is that when Apple still had App Store & iTunes gift cards in Australia, you’d see a mix of 15% or 20% discounts at retailers during the last couple of years of the gift cards’ existence, but you’d almost always see a 15% discount.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks mate - greatly appreciate the breakdown.

Yes, planning on purchasing a new MacBook in the next month when they launch their yearly Education promo, so keen to get these cards in the next week or so.

Any suggestions on getting discounted Coles GC's in the next week?

            • +4

@Zazer: In regards to discounted Coles gift cards, I suggest you check the discounted gift card page, which is maintained by the OzBargain community (including me).

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Thank you for that! I meant more as in if there was a Coles 15% off GC deal that I had missed or something - judging off that link, looks like 4% discount if I can get access is currently the best deal then.

                • +2

@Zazer: 4% is highest you’d get, but keep in mind the following (which isn’t captured in the page, as I have no easy way of capturing it alongside the discounts table):

                  • Gift card portals tend to charge payment processing fees. For example, HCF Thank You charges a 1% processing fee for all card payments.

                  • Gift card portals usually enforce a limit on the amount of Coles gift cards you can purchase in a given period. For example, HCF Thank You enforces a $500 per member per week limit, and Reward Gateway enforces a $400 per member per week limit. The 3% discount is not as great and Suncorp Benefits is shutting down on Jan 20, but I guess you cannot have it all!

The best option for you may be Suncorp Benefits, as you only need a Suncorp product (e.g. Suncorp transaction account, AAMI insurance policy) to access it, they charge no transaction fees, plus there’s a $1,000 per member per week limit.

                  • @WookieMonster: With Suncorp benefits ceasing new orders in a few weeks time, and the Coles gift cards it generates don’t work when buying other gift cards, I think it’s a no go.

Other eGift cards providers however might work.

        • +3

I am waiting for 40x, i.e. 20% back as reward points.
I am pretty sure I will be waiting forever. ;)

          • @DoctorCalculon: Yep, bring back the 20% discount.

            Apple can afford it.

            • @papapanda:

Yep, bring back the 20% discount.

I made that comment in jest.
              20% hasn't happened yet.

              • @DoctorCalculon: They were rare, but they did 20% off on the old Apple iTunes cards

                • @papapanda: Back then iTunes cards weren't unified with Apple Gift Cards, and could only be used for purchases of digital assets.

          • @DoctorCalculon: 30x was the best since they introduced the new Apple gift card, wasn’t it?

            • @hawkeye93: Yes. Woolies were the first to introduce the promotion twice, before Coles jumped on the bandwagon with Apple.

  • +3

By my maths, that works out as spend $100, earn $10 worth of points for shopping.

    • +8

Yep, so basically it’s like you had spent $110 ($100 of Apple gear, plus $10 of groceries), but only paid $100. This equates to a saving of 10/110, which is 9.1% off.

The maths is impeccable (and irrefutable)

      • -4

But your not counting the fact you generate additional points on what you spend with flybuys points.

Spend $1000 on gift cards, get bonus $100, get something for free for $100, put the saving towards another $100 gift card, get another 2000 bonus points or $10. So in the end you got $1110 from $1000 spend.

This doesn't even count targeted points boosters that you can activate in the app when you spend the flybuys dollars.

        • -1

"But your not counting the fact you generate additional points on what you spend with flybuys points."

The bottom line is that there are lots of "what if" scenarios you can come up with that change the % "saving". It really depends on the circumstances for each person. For example - using your FB points requires you to spend at Coles, K-Mart, Liquorland, First Choice, Target or Shell Coles Express. So that makes you "buy" from these outlets, whether they are the cheapest option for spending a $100. So you may not actually get $100 of value from using $100 of FB points.

In addition, buying the Apple gift cards requires you to purchase from the Apple Store (unless you plan on selling them). So, for example you might use your $1,000 of Apple GC's to buy an iPad from Apple that you could have bought elsewhere for $950. You're still in front (arguably) because you got $100 worth of FB points - but in reality half of that benefit benefit has been lost by being forced to pay more than you needed to because you're locked in to buying from Apple.

Ultimately, the value you extract from deals like this comes down to your individual circumstances. People just need to realise this and not over-complicate matters by throwing in "what if's" when discussing % discounts.

          • +1

            @bean_counter: Username checks out!

          • +1

@bean_counter: It's not really a 'what if' scenario if you ever take advantage of another gift card deal at Coles ever again. And yes son, that's why you make sure that what you buy from these places is still a good price or on sale, we should all know that (by being on this site). You can also spend at more places than that, including Bunnings and Officeworks. There aren't many times that Bunnings is more expensive than elsewhere, especially when they price match and beat it by 5%, and a lot of things are too heavy/bulky for online places to compete with them.

      • -2

hey so what's the minimum GC after $20 - and how much $ value would i be getting back? plz tia

        • ~600pts on the min $30 card?

          so… what.. $3? ehhh

        • Minimum spend would be $20 — BUT this must be $20 on a VARIABLE $20-$500 card to collect the points.

The standard $20 gift card is excluded from this offer, but the variable $20-$500 card is fair game. And you can load any amount from $20 to $500 on the variable card

Halcyon days are 'calm, nice weather days', totally out of context here.

          • +1

@nikoris: Some dictionaries give the calm/peaceful definition as their first entry, but Merriam-Webster (as an exemplar) gives the following as its first entry, which is how I took you to mean it:

characterized by happiness, great success, and prosperity : GOLDEN —often used to describe an idyllic time in the past that is remembered as better than today

            • @strangeloops66: As a Greek, its weird to me.
This expression (coming from a myth) is widely used in our language to express nice weather during winter, which happens every year.
It's funny to me how language 'evolves' and things lose/ change their meaning.

          • @nikoris: what denominations are available?

  • +1

Good for if you're buying a laptop or something. Spread it across a few Flybuys cards and load up your Apple balance with the gift cards to get around the 5 gift card limit.

    • +3

Ahhh I’m not sure the 5 gift card limit applies in the way you think it does.

The 5 gift card limit usually refers to the fact that Coles’ POS system only lets you purchase an absolute maximum of 5 gift cards per transaction. I say usually, because it looks like Coles/Flybuys changed the wording for this deal to say there’s a 5 gift card limit per Flybuys account, instead of customer.

In previous Apple gift card deals at Coles, many people purchased more than 5 gift cards and still had no issues getting bonus points on more than 5 gift cards, even when there was a 5 gift card per customer clause in the terms.

I guess it will be up to one of you to see whether you can earn bonus points on more than 5 gift cards during this deal. Coles/Flybuys has done a very good job recently of making their terms and conditions contradictory and confusing!

      • +3

Oh, I was referring to when you actually try to purchase through Apple using a bunch of gift cards in a single transaction. There was a limit, which you could get around by loading up all the gift cards into your Apple balance.

        • +2

Lol you were. I think I need some sleep!

    • Do you sign up for multiple flybuys accounts using the same phone number or different ones?

  • +1

Wish it was Woolworths and not Coles…

    • +2

      Same here, actually

    • Only need to wait a few more weeks. :)

    • Me too, I work at Woolies so I naturally always shop there.

      • Yes I heard woolworths employees get discount on Gift cards as well (even Visa/Eftpos one Somehow), so ofcourse you'd always buy there (because of double dipping 5% and any bonus points).
But for general people Woolworths is good only because of the fact it offers split payment (across different cards or same card) So essentially could allow 2% back from HSBC debit Card too.
But nevertheless Flybuys dollars is a lot more useful than ED Rewards Dollars IMO.

        • The employee discount on gift cards is dodgy at best. I tried to buy Woolworths gift cards a few years back and it didn't apply. It did work on JB Hifi cards though, as well as David Jones ones. I tried to buy a Myer card last week and it didn't work.

They're very unclear on which gift cards you can get at a discount.

  • 45,000 points = $225 in Flybuy dollars

Max amount of gift cards to reach 45,000 points = $450 x5

      • +2

Fascinating. So one could go ahead and purchase 111 variable $20 gift cards, and a $30 gift card, say, and pocket the points that way. The pros being that you’d accumulate 112 Apple stickers to decorate in style. The cons being you’d be a complete arsehole

        • +1

What… they’re actual stickers?! I thought they were just cards

          • @dorikin: Oh no… I may have opened the floodgates… eek!

There are five different sticker designs — you can see them here

  • Should stack well with the Back to Uni apple offer (if it occurs this year)

  • -7

    People, this is not a 9.1% discount. It's a 10% discount.

This definition of discount by (initial spend) divided by (total value obtained) doesn't make sense here.

Suppose you just got 100% cashback on a $10 pizza.
That's a $10 spend for $20 of value (the $10 pizza and the $10 cash back).
Your bank account before and after the cashback is unchanged, yet you only got a "50% discount" on that pizza.

See how unnatural that definition is?

That's why people take the definition of (actual spend) divided by (normal spend).
This is the more intuitive definition and the one that's actually more useful to us.

One important assumption is made here, which is that Flybuys dollars are 1:1 equivalent to AUD.
That's not an unreasonable thing to assume considering how many people are frequently shopping at Coles.

    • +1

Your bank account before and after the cashback is unchanged, yet you only got a "50% discount" on that pizza.

This is where your analogy breaks down completely.
The cashback does not go back into your bank account. Instead, you are given reward points which have lower liquidity.

The correct explanation has been provided by @tharlow already:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11579062/redir

      • -1

Which is exactly why I pointed out the assumption that was taken at the end of my comment.

Flybuys rewards expire after a year of inactivity. So If you shop at Coles every week - or even every month - for your groceries, you will:

        • firstly, be accumulating enough Flybuys points over time to hit the minimum redemption threshold, and
        • secondly, be spending more on groceries than your extra Flybuys dollars obtained from the gift cards.

Under these assumptions, your Flybuys dollars are easily redeemable for the advertised one-to-one discount on your grocery shopping paid in AUD; thus you can treat these Flybuys dollars as a one-to-one with fiat currency in this case.

    • That's why people take the definition of (actual spend) divided by (normal spend).
This is the more intuitive definition and the one that's actually more useful to us.

      Actual spend = $100, say
Normal spend = $100 (at Apple Store) + $10 (Coles groceries, say)

      $100/$110 means saving of 9.1%

      • Can’t believe how bad the math is here.

You get $110 worth of goods but spent $100 ($110-$10), therefore $110/$100 = 110% or 10% in excess.

    • -1

      TL;DR.

      • You get $10 back in Flybuys dollars.
      • If you shop at Coles enough, $10 Flybuys is easily redeemable to AUD$10.
      • That means you should be able to count that AUD$10 against your initial spend of AUD$100.
      • ($100-$10)/$100 equates to a 10% discount.

That's how most people think, that's how the deal functions for most people, and so that's how it should be.

When we work with mathematics, we strive to make it as natural and intuitive as we can.
Please don't get bogged down in semantics.

      • +1

If you shop at Coles enough, $10 Flybuys is easily redeemable to AUD$10.

If you shop at Apple enough, $10 Apple Gift Card is easily redeemable to AUD$10

      • Semantics are important here. The problem with the math so far is that it assumes a ‘discount’ when really it is an ‘excess’ as it applies to your next transaction. So the discount could be as high as 100% if you only spent $10, while the excess for every marginal $100 spent is 10%.

But yes, it is far easier to equate it to a simple 10% ‘discount’ for every $100 spent.

  • Okay it's 1am and I'm too sleepy to do the maths.

I'm looking to guy the ipad 2021 through the education store, what amount gift cards should I buy to get the maximum value and maximum Flybuy points?

(A previous post stated "The $500 gift card in this deal is actually a variable load gift card where you can load any amount between $20 and $500 inclusive, so it is possible to get exactly $679 in Apple gift cards from Coles.")

    • You could get two variable ($20-$500) gift cards, and then load $500 and $179 on to each card respectively… as an example

    • As an aside, you can also load cents, if you are so inclined — any amount between $20.00 and $500.00 is possible, in increments of 1 cent

      • ..how do u get exact cents with this deal?

    • It would be slightly easier to just get a $500 and a $200 and then you will have some balance left over for iCloud etc.

      • can we use the Gc for monthly iCloud storage?

        • Yes

  • Can u redeem this gift card into itunes acc?

  • I don't shop at coles and waiting for a 20x everyday rewards offer. Worth waiting longer or just take it while its available?

    • +1

Yes, I suggest you wait. Normally this offer will come to Woolworths or big W one after the other.

      • Thanks yeah I think I'll wait and if theres a 30x every day rewards deal thats a bonus!

  • So if I’m buying a new iPhone in the next week or so, worth doing?

I’ve got flybuys but shop everywhere so no real loyalty I guess

    • If the gift cards are to be redeemed in the next week or so, I would say yes. As I noted further up, these bonus points deals only happen approximately once a month, and they seem to rotate between Coles, Woolworths and BIG W each time, so now would be a good time to jump in.

    • Depends on your personal circumstances including but not limited to…..

      • the value you can extract from using the FB points
e.g. If you're only getting $90 in value from using $100 worth of FB points i.e. you can get the same items elsewhere for $90 then the FB points are probably only worth $90 to you.

      • whether you can buy the iPhone you want from a cheaper source than the Apple Store.
If you're paying more for the same phone via the Apple Store then that reduces the value of the gift cards to you i.e. if you spend $1,000 on gift cards to get a phone you could get elsewhere for $950 then all other things being equal, you're only getting $950 in value from the $1,000 you used to buy the gift cards.

So think about the FB deal and the value it represents for you compared to other realistic options.

      • Yep thanks.

I’m trading in my iPhone for a new model so they give me a $350 trade in which I couldn’t get anywhere else.

Guess it’s another step to get $60 of free groceries?

  • +4

I absolutely HATE the entire Flybuy or Coles group’s IT products. They are difficult and buggy to use. You can feel the infrastructure is so dated and almost pay no attention to user experience.

In “2022”, you still can’t use flybuy dollars by simply scanning your member number at the store and you have to “swipe” the physical card which their system has problem to reissue and their support is next to none……I’m still battling to get a physical card so I can actually spend the money that I have under my membership…..

If you have a smooth experience with flybuy, good on you, this is a good deal, but otherwise I would rather wait for Woolworth’s gift card deal, so much easier, straightforward and less problem.

    • +4

I generally agree that Flybuys is archaic and has horrible customer service when compared to Everyday Rewards, but it does have one important benefit over Everyday Rewards:

      • Flybuys' method of allowing customers to redeem Flybuys Dollars is very secure (or in your case, too secure). If Flybuys copies what Everyday Rewards does and allows you to redeem whatever amount you want on a transaction just by scanning your card and pressing a couple of buttons at the payment screen on the checkout, they'll open themselves up to members' rewards being fraudulently redeemed en-masse.

I will note that you can actually scan your Flybuys card and instantly redeem Flybuys points (not Flybuys Dollars) for a discount in-store, but:

      • You must be a Coles Financial Services (CFS) customer with the Flybuys account tied to your CFS product, and

      • You can only redeem 2000 points for a $10 discount at Coles (and no other business accepting Flybuys), and

      • Flybuys only rewards points based on your spend after taking into account any discounts, so if you spend $50 and opt for the instant $10 discount, you'll only get points based on a $40 spend, not a $50 spend. That would also impact any bonus points offers you have on your Flybuys account, so this method of redeeming Flybuys points is convenient and also really, really sucks.

You can also redeem between 2000 and 10000 points per transaction on Coles Online through Flypay, but that assumes you even want to use Coles Online and Flypay…

You can also redeem your Flybuys points for physical gift cards through the Flybuys Rewards Store, but you'll have to wait for a physical gift card to arrive via mail and hope the physical gift card doesn't go missing in the mail (which happened to me once and it took some wrangling before I got a satisfactory resolution).

My guess is that Flybuys will eventually allow you to redeem Flybuys Dollars in-store without a physical Flybuys card, because of a general industry shift away from magstripes. Mastercard recently announced they're dropping the requirement for their cards to have magstripes (starting in 2024), and it wouldn't surprise me if other payment networks also follow suit.

However, knowing Flybuys and Coles Group and Wesfarmers and their general lack of innovation when compared with Woolworths Group, it would be years before I'd expect to see Flybuys do something as innovative as no longer requiring a physical Flybuys card to redeem Flybuys points or Flybuys Dollars in-store. Woolworths Group really does run rings around Coles Group and Wesfarmers in this regard…

Thanks for the info (and the following rant isn’t towards you), but to be honest, all those seemingly “pluses” (not to me, just another “excuses” for their sloppy system design if you ask me) sounds like just a “by product” of a bad system, rather than a well designed and thought out product. I see them as “find a good thing out of a bad event” or glass half full kind of thing….so no thanks.

        • Agreed, Flybuys as a whole is haphazard and lacks innovation and could really do with another revamp!

I like the lack of innovation, It makes my card/rewards more secure. And most importantly they still allow addition of flybuys points in store (if forgotten to scan card during the transaction)

Everyday rewards and flybuys are half and half

Simply scan the barcode means the reward roller will be easily stolen if anyone knows your card number. Flybuys $ will be much more secure as it requires the physical card and PIN number

      • A common 2 ways authentication probably will reduce such risk significantly. One can argue it still has risk, but let’s just say it’s a risk worth having (for me at very least), it’s a flybuy card, not a bitcoin wallet…..

45000/20=2250, so if you want to max out this deal and buy an iphone would you just get 4x$500 + $250?

    • +1

Yep, that would be the easiest way to do that.

      • I already used this new once for an MacBook Pro back in December, do you think I can do it again for an iPhone?

        • Could you please elaborate? I’m not sure what you’re trying to ask.
