[Resolved] OzBargain Should Separate Physical Game and Digital Game Posts - There's Too Many Digital Game Posts - Agree or Not?

Hi folks

If I was a customer shopping for games and looking at the new deals for the week (not the day) I'm swamped with CD Keys bargains, Epic Games, GOG Games, Steam Bargains , eshop pricing and PlayStation store.. the majority of gaming posts aren't actually physical items, I want to price match and see what deals are available so I can post the right deals, even that is hard..

Digital items go on special all the time there are seasons where the bargains drop (End of Year, Spring(US), Winter Deals, Fall Deals, Black Friday, and Summer (all US seasons) as well as Publisher specials, sometimes it seems its just for votes as well who is the fastest to find oh a steam game for $2.00 that's just an example. Even though I am a seller of physical games my interpretation as a customer all I see is digital games every time I click the Video Game tab or the Switch Game Tab or Xbox Game. (I've never played a PlayStation game in my life) but I know my products, and I know what to look for.

Let me know what you think? Is there too many digital game posts, cause of my disability I'm not very good at the technical stuff of making a Poll etc on this post, if anyone could help would be great. Also I don't know if I should put association with a store as this is not a store issue either..so if I'm breaking a rule that I'm unaware of please let me know - again technical stuff.

Thanks

All deals have tags at the bottom that you can click on and search by. The mods and power users go to great effort to ensure they're accurate.

Perhaps we need to start using a tag like Digital Game or Digital Copy and Physical Game or Physical Copy to make it easier to distinguish?

    • +1

that would be a great idea actually

      • Since it's a tag and not a category it doesn't clutter everything up like others have mentioned below.

    • Let's make this official. I vote Digital Game & Physical Game.

    • Excellent solution.

agree, but where is the poll?

      Poll added.

        thanks dude

  • The last physical game I bought was cod on release day… world at war.… lol

Hope you waited till it was $9 at EB!

      • No! I bought it full rrp and got the collectors edition. This was many years before ozbargain though.

        • Does it still have the seal, or did you play it to death and enjoy every minute?

          • @mskeggs: Played to death for a week then servers were full of save game hackers with flamethrowers

    • The last physical copy of a game I bought was games being cleared out at my local JB HiFi… Ghost Recon Wildlands, the Beyond Earth DLC and Darksiders Genesis. All were $5 or less.

I buy some physical games (lately only Switch) because it is a nice gift for people. I don’t especially care if it is $4 more than digital. I don’t care if it is sealed collectors of something.

People use OzB for lots of reasons, so trying to limit categories to just one use case (I am a gamer buying for myself who doesn’t care about digital) is probably more than the categories are useful for.

As an example, it took a long time for alcohol to be a separate category to food/drinks. Even though I suggest there is much more utility in being able to look at wine versus Uncle Ben’s 2 minute rice than between cart or download copies of Mario Kart.

Especially as there would be outrage the first day a cart copy was cheaper than a digital or vice versa, for people who just want the cheapest games.

    Disagree.

It’s usually a pretty even split between digital copies & physical copies in my experience.

Maybe in the lead up to Christmas/New Years with the Epic freebies & $15 off vouchers it was pushed towards the digital side for awhile, but that would be an exception.

I’ve never bought a digital version by mistake or vice versa, most posters make it very obvious with Steam, Epic, GOG in the title - a little reading is all it takes.

    • Agree. I prefer digital purchase as retail is usually a code for digital redemption anyway. Half the stuff that comes up are physical console games.

      • i dont sell code in a box games - maybe on PC but thats it - i have a few code in a box US releases but thats pretty much it.

    • i noted the seasons of digital sales , but they are every season almost plus the others, and to note the 2 new digital consoles too on the market

  • I think most people want the cheapest games. While some are very picky about cart/disk versus digital, there are forums elsewhere for that narrow interest of collectors etc.

And I say that with a pref for physical, and I usually buy gifts. But if Cyberpunk 2077 or whatever is $4 for a digital code, then the kid is getting the steam gift card printed in a card if the physical is $30.

      • Lysander used to post lots of digital game posts that I liked, as they tended to put a couple of comments about undiscovered (for my very casual gaming) games.

A good game post for me has:
        - big discount that is new or rare or FREE.
        - a good game, and even better if there is a line describing the genre or why it is a good game.
        - why it is a good idea to buy e.g. a physical game going digital only, or a last chance at a special edition or something.

Probably, and I’ma gonna let you speak, the mods want fewer categories, because miscategorised deals are a pain to clean up. If the category is ‘games’ nobody gets mixed up about where to post.

The real player would be having a separate board game category!

yeah you have some good points there - actually having a physical and digital tag would be great, seems a lot prefer digital these days - i do myself if its cheap i must admit, only reason i bought this up was a flood of digital games took almost 1 1/2 pages last night without a physical post, im not a physical collector but i collect for my members..cause i like to sell what i collect, thats just me..

Make it a tag instead of a category. Solves the clutter issue.

  • Dunno why but PSN and Xbox Store games are always really expensive… I bought Last of Us 2 for about $50 at BigW, PS trying to convince me to buy it digital for only $99.

And on the PC side of things, I don't think you can get games that actually come with a disc anymore. Most games wouldn't fit on a DVD, can't expect people to have a BDRom in there computer. So it's keys only. But means you can't lend it out or resell it like a Xbox or PS game disc. But those are cheaper than the digital copies.

    The whole thing is screwy…

      The whole thing is screwy…

Had this chat with one of my teenagers, about the network effects and convenience of the steam launcher.
Steam massively discounted their sales until they were the only game in town, now it is “Steam sales aren’t what they used to be”.
We should support Epic, or whoever (personally GOG, cause I liked their philosophy long before they released AAA games) because the last thing bargain hunters want is a de facto monopoly.

Apple charge 30% on digital sales. I don’t know what Google or Steam charges, but we’ll all be poorer if the gatekeepers take such a fat cut, and if there is no competition, like with iOS, you can be sure they will.

      • Part of the problem with Steam sales is that they used to have a selection of games cheaper every day. So those who had bought it the day prior or after for more would always ask Steam to refund the difference. Steam stopped the flash sales to prevent it from happening.

  • Some people like digital and some people like a physical copy good search functions make a website more enjoyable to use.

What about code in a box?

But personally no, I wouldn't want that.

  • +1

I voted disagree because I don't think they should be separate but I support the tag idea which benefits both the people who are looking for physical copies specifically and those who want digital.

Also idiotic posts relating to basic driving rules, or disputes over neighbour's garbo, or posts seeking advice, when they themselves only need to open the phone directory and contact these places directly…. what tires should I buy… ring the tyre mob…. what car should I buy…. go to a dealer…

  • Good to see that the TAG + Physical Media (Video Game) has now been added and the moderators are adapting this tag to physical media deals, hopefully people will start using it when searching for physical media deals - thanks for everyone who voted in the poll , and thanks for mentioning a good alternative way to set apart digital from physical posts.

  • 6 Months down the track folks since the TAG + Physical Media (Video Game) was added to ozbargain - how has it been :)
