Where to Purchase Self-Tapping Torx Screws (Not Tamperproof Torx)?

Hello everyone,
Happy New Year and Best Wishes to all.

I was looking to purchase some Torx Head screws, not the Security Tamperproof Torx. When down to Bunnings and Mitre 10 both stores only seem to stock only Philips. My nearest specialty Hardware store seems to only stock Square Drive and Philips Head screws. The reason for wanting Torx is that the Philips screws which I normally purchase have a tendency to strip and cam out.

If anyone knows where to purchase some Torx Screws preferably in 7g and 8g by 25mm or less it would be most appreciated.

Thank you

  • Are you thinking big ones or smaller ones?

I've been using stainless steel decking screws for a project I'm working on, they're torx and have the bit in the box. I've put about 300 of them in so far with an impact driver and only stripped one out (hit it at the wrong angle).

    Hope that helps :)

Bunnings has them, not sure why yours doesn't. Though you also haven't specified what type of screws you are after.

Thanks for your input Brendamm, Bunnings has Torx mainly for decking screws. I was after the smaller sizes 7G and 8G by 25mm and smaller.

        Use google.

In that size, I can't see how you are camming out. If you are trying to put them into hardwood or metal, perhaps try pre drilling. Are you using the correct driving bit, or some cheap rubbish?

        • +1

I didn't think of it initially when I replied but OP may be using a PH driver for a PZ screws or vice versa. Would explain the cam out for what should be a low torque screw. A lot of what Bunnings sell in the smaller screws are PZ IIRC.

you also haven't specified what type of screws you are after

I think you might be getting a little confused there, buddy. The OP did specify what type of screws he was after, several times, including in the title.

OP gave drive type and size, nothing else. Plenty detail missing for an accurate response.

      • Someone's upset they got called out in the lipo thread đŸ˜‚. Would you use the same fastener to fit hardwood decking, as you would to secure two bits of colourbond fencing together? Also, if you look at the revisions, length was never stated initially.

        • I'm never upset by trifles. You got called out, I got called out. If you can't see the parallels…

          • -1

@pjetson: The difference is, I called you out appropriately, and knew what I was talking about. You tried to double down, but again didn't know what you were talking about, or you would have realised the intended purpose and length is a very large factor.

            • @brendanm: Link to lipo thread? I missed that one.

              • @MS Paint: It's not particularly interesting, just whining and semantics really. I just thought it was amusing that someone was so upset about it, that they tried to have a go in this thread.

The even funnier thing is that they just sent me an angry pm about it, again insisting that op had already specified the type of screw, as they said "torx".

                • @brendanm: Just saw the thread. I was thinking liposuction not lithium polymer. Doh.

                  • -1

@MS Paint: That must have been especially disappointing for you.

Get the stainless steel Philips self tapers from Bunnings.

  • I assume you're after wood screws rather than a tek screw? Torx has never been popular in Aust for general wood screws. You can get them but you're going to have to look at a fastener supply place rather than Bunnings. I don't know any in VIC but I'm sure you can find them via Google.

  • What are you trying to fix and fix to?

  • What's wrong with square drive?
You're talking some pretty short screws, surely square will give you the extra bit you need if the Phillips is camming out. What material are you talking? Or you've got some damn cheap Phillips screws :P

I'd have a look at your technique on the drill. Shouldn't be stripping them.

Looks like you have a problem that no one else does

  • RS Components usually have a good range, but usually more for industrial rather than building purposes. I just checked, couldn't find 25mm but found 30mm, assuming wood screws.

  • If your screws are always "camming out";

    A: buy better quality screws
    B: buy better quality drivers
C: make sure you are using the correct bit (there are about 4 different drivers that people just call all of them "Phillips head")
D: make sure the bits you are using are not worn out.
E: pilot hole is too small
F: don't over torque the screws
G: maybe your technique needs improvement.

PH is a reasonably resilient drive design and most failures or "cam outs" come from incorrect tooling and/or incorrect technique.

    • pilot hole is too small

Or doesn't exist. That would cause issues the op is experiencing.

Scrooz.com.au are a good supplier. Much better for fasteners than Bunnings.

  • No idea where to buy but maybe it’s the Philips driver bit that’s a little worn in the tip that’s giving the problem.
