Nintendo Switch Games Regions

I have recently bought a Nintendo Switch Oled, while looking at the website and console there are lots of things which doesn't makes sense. Could someone who already owns Nintendo devices could you please provide the details for people like me.

1) What are the benefits of Nintendo Switch Games Regions, i have changed the regions on Switch Oled console to different regions to see if there is any price difference but all of them are costing the exact same amount to the cents and all the prices are displayed in AUD. And also exact same games available on all the regions so what's the point of having the Regions, when there are no region specific deals or games etc available?

2) What's the point of having the Nintendo Online Subscription when there are literally no free games available except the 20 or so 1970 or 1950 2D paper games? Is it only so that you can play with random online gamers?

3) How can we filter in australian nintendo store https://www.nintendo.com.au/games
If i want to filter by age group, filter by ratings, filter by how many people i can play the game with etc. (Workaround i found is to go and search in US nintendo store then search that game here)

4) Its only showing limited number of free games, i previously owned Wii Console which i bought for 1/6th of the price of switch console, it had lots of free games preloaded. Is there anyway to get more free games.

5) Did anyone purchased Switch games in different regions through website, when logged into brazil site online digital version is disabled, only physical copies sold.

6) Are there any effective ways to purchase the games at reasonable prices as buying the Nintendo gift card at 10% off are still costing too expensive.

7) Also what are the silver points for i got around 130 points, it said linking facebook etc gives 300 points i linked but did not get any points. so is it worth the time and effort in scoring these points.

  • I'll answer what I can.

    1. Different regions have sales at different times. Popular titles are likely to have the same price across the world. But I've gotten many sale games from US and Japan that weren't on sale in Aus.

    2. Online subscription allows you to play online games online. Many of these would be multiplayer

    3. Never tried to filter.

    4. Whatever is listed on the online store is it (officially) You can filter by free to download games though.

There are ways to methods to obtain 'preloaded' or backed up games but none of the methods wills work for oled switch

    1. I've bought physical games from other regions, there are no region locks for physical. The only way I think you can but electronic is through the online store (for region).

    2. Watch for sales for games you like. If okay with electronic copies, a lot of YouTube videos show what is currently on sale in other regions.

    3. Points equate to money. You can use the points to purchase or reduce price of electronic games from the region the account is set to.

  • Mods, can you please move this to Games, there is no edit option to change to Gaming

Dekudeals is way better for browsing and searching games than the e-store.

  • I don’t have much to say on most of those questions but regarding games, your best bet for getting more then 10% off is scumtree of bookface marketplace.
Games are still $40-50 but better then $70-80 and you can usually check them while buying by bringing your switch.

And as for online play, only worth it if you like whipping randoms online at mariokart etc. personally I’d never play switch without the online subscription.
The N64 expansion pack is a bit meh though (until Banjo kazooie arrives)

Normally I would avoid second hand as they are still very expensive. If you keep your eyes out on ozbargain, you are likely to be paying less for new games

      • Waiting longer for them though.

If i want a game and don’t want to pay rrp I usually just hit up second hand (with a case, because I’m fussy and like having resell value)

Otherwise I’m just waiting to see games on sale and impulse buy for switch.

        • Fair point

  • Regarding your first point; moving the console's region option in settings won't modify the eShop's pricing. It's tied to whatever was selected when the account was created. You can have multiple accounts on the same Switch though, with a variety of regions. For example, my primary account is set to the US, so all my eShop prices are in USD, and the only way I'm able to purchase games digitally is by first buying US eShop Cards via sites like gamivo.com and redeeming them on the console to purchase games in USD.

2): I think the best part of Nintendo Switch Online is those old games via the NES, SNES and N64 apps, but they are banking on your nostelga. Otherwise, the only benefit would be accessing online services in any of the games that support it.

3): You've already found the only way I know how to do it (via US store). There's plenty of other deal sites like Dekudeals that may have better filtering options for the AU store.

4): There's a number of F2P games, but I'm not sure whether they require Nintendo Switch Online in order to use them. Other than that, not really many free games I'm afraid.

5): I can make purchases on the US store's website using credit I've already redeemed via the console. You'll notice that during a big sale the eShop tends to lag out and crash when you get down the list, so if you're shopping on the console itself it's best to add games to your wishlist and purchase them from there, that way you won't lose where you were on the new sales page.

6): I find the prices on the US store to be more reasonable, but as I stated earlier, you need to find US eShop Credit at a site like this: (https://www.gamivo.com/search/nintendo%20eshop%20usd). The price varies, and it's best to wait for a 10% off sale, but if you buy at the right time you can usually get them at close to face value ($20 USD for $21-22 AUD)

7): I think they're redeemable for cosmetics like backgrounds, icons, etc on Nintendo's website. Once upon a time you used to be able to use them for physical merchanise, but I'm not sure if that's still going. You'll also notice that when you purchase games you'll recieve some gold coins, these are the ones that can be used on the store as credit when you make a purchase.

Edit: I would also recommend checking out the OzBargain Classifieds to find a family looking for members for Nintendo Switch Online. It's a lot cheaper. There's usually two types, ones with the expansion pack, which allows you to play the N64 games, and ones without.

    1. Effective ways to score games is by being open to physical and digital games. The 10% voucher is helpful when you stack it on another deal. I typically would not get digital games unless there are discounts. Also, physical games comes on sale from time to time, check ozbargain history to get a sense of price.

    2) NSO is for playing games online like ps+ it comes with few classic games. Best to find a group to share between 8 people. You are looking at approximately 1/4 the price of a single membership

    4) if you wanted free games, Nintendo Switch is not the console to get them at and this tied with point 2. Nintendo games are very expensive n comparison. What is its place in the market? Portability. Running games on cartridge is a feature most people online leave out (no need to download games to console and ready to play in most cases). A great list of exclusives that may or may not be for you.

    7) ignore these points unless you buy a lot of games and plan to do a lot of surveys. The points expire after some time and they give you access to Nintendo exclusive products. You are better off claiming coins that reduce the cost of online games (auto on eshop & have to manually claim physical copies)

  • Thanks for the replies much appreciated.
I forgot to ask another question

    8) What games would you recommend if 2 kids can play on same console with each joy con used as a separate controller. I have seen this in Nintendo pictures somewhere but couldn't actually find out which games that can be used for. I have googled but couldn't find any. Found some multi player games, I have installed them but couldn't play 2 players on single console. There are no such filters exist in any Nintendo website which can throw the search results. Nintendo games are so expensive and it's even harder to find out which games to buy.

    • Depends, how old are your kids and what kind of games do they like? Do they want to compete or team up?

      Some great couch coop/multiplayer games:

      Can't go wrong with these:
      Mario Kart 8
Super Mario party (if they like motion control)
Mario party superstar (if they like button control)
      Smash bros ultimate

      Can end up in fights:
      Overcooked 1 + 2

      Wait for sales on these:
      Boomerang fu
      Lovers in dangerous spacetime
Screencheat (for golden eye like gameplay with a twist)

If they would like to go through a story together:
      Luigi's mansion 3

      • Agree with these suggestions. Some others.

        Blazing beaks
        Just dance
        Lego Harry Potter
        Moving out
        Must dash amigos
        Stikbold
        Unrailed
        Pico park

        For older kids:
        Human fall flat
        Death squared
        Flat Heroes
        Rocket league

  • Thanks

  • if the games are too expensive even at 10% off then why did you get it you could have just gotten a normal switch with mario kart for $380 which would have given you more money to get games and also physical games are cheaper you should wait for amazon to have a sale they have just had a black friday deal where all games were cheaper

    • Mistake, just noticed apart from the display & extra 32gb there are literally no upgrades and that too released after 5 years.

      • there is a little more than that the battery life is slightly improved because of the oled screen and the kickstand has been improved the one on the old model is useless and the speakers are louder

  • There are plenty of great games to be had for under $10. Setup an account on Deku deals. Find games you like, add them to your wish list. You'll get an email when they come on sale.

  • The main purpose of creating a regional account is so you can access certain content/games that aren't avaliable locally. Esprade is only avaliable on the Japanese eShop. Green Hell is only avaliable on the US eShop. And so on.

For bargain hunting - check both physical and digital versions. Sometimes it's much cheaper to buy the game physically if you find it pre-owned. For other games, digital usually works out cheaper because there are absurd sales on all the time. Witcher 3 was free a few weeks ago. Keep checking the shop for price changes. I almost never pay full price for a Switch game.
