Surely a golf R uses A5 oil?
Edit. Just googled. Nope
I tried both one after the other and found them both to be excellent oils. However, I did notice the car running smoother on the Castrol Edge.
For golf 6 You better stick with VW 504 507 spec oil.

Got this yesterday even though I have 3 other cans of 5L.
Easier using this bc my engine takes 5.7L
I swapped over to this oil when Autobarn had the 5L for $25 and have been impressed with it so far.
How does it compare to Castrol Edge?
Same thing. You buy whichever is cheaper at the time.
So then Castrol Edge?
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674598
Nope this is still cheaper.
@shrapse: Didn't notice there was 1L different
I've read up online a little, but you know how these things go - anyone got insight into what happens if mix the castrol edge with this? (say you did the service with the edge)
you should be fine when you are replacing a full tank from one brand to another. I wouldn't top up using another brand of oil though.
any insight as to why? I appreciate the reply, thanks boss :)
Common sense! :)
@pork chop: I.e I have absolutely no idea, but it sounds good! 😅
@Binchicken22: The most important thing BY FAR is that the grade of oil used meets the car's required spec (taking into account expected environmental temps - which is often overlooked by folks as Australia is quite a hot part of the world).
As this very thorough test shows - even mixing 10 different oils in a car showed NO negatives whatsoever. I have no qualms about mixing different makers oils - and you have to remember unless you're doing a very thorough flush between changes 10-15% of the old oil generally stays in the engine block on surfaces etc.

So is it something you should do for a benefit? No - but if you happen to do it you can be all but guaranteed not to have any negatives. :-)
Depends on the car. In my shitboxes, i throw anything in and top up with different brands and even viscosities and they have done well over 100,000kms. In my good cars i use the appropriate oil.
Generally okay… However, each brand uses their own additives, some are moly based, silicone, could be anything really. So slight chance mixing them can create mixtures of additives in your engine. This only gets taken out with a flush.
Good deal, FYI for comparison Costco have the 5L 3W30 for $39.98.
https://www.costco.com.au/warehouse-savings_P5W1-2?utm_sourc…
3W30
Must be an exclusive. Never heard of 3W
More likely a typo
Is this the same one that Costco sells? Wonder what the usual price @ Costco is
Thank OP. Bought some for the daily.
Good deal, you can prob price match with auto one, $34.95.
https://www.autoone.com.au/search?ProductSearch=Nulon%205w30
Priced match with Autobarn and they accepted it a couple weeks ago.
5L vs 6L bottle…
Maybe autobarn didn't notice when they price matched.
Do you guys buy this to change your own oil?
I did my last oil change on my VZ V6 Commy with this oil, keeps the ol girl running good (over 300,000 km's). At this price gonna have to snap up a bottle as I'm due for my next one.
Plus Aussie owned and made is a big plus for me.
You’ve done well to keep the Alloytech running that far, usually have stuffed timing chains long before 300K. Regular oil changes ftw.
I have a 2005, so before they changed the chain to the problematic one. Early 2006's and onwards are the stretchy chains. :-)
@disturboed: Ah righto, didn't realise the early ones were the good ones, its usually the other way around. Still, good effort 👍
Definitely
The Nulon 5w30 sold through Costco while the same viscosity is not Dexos 1 approved and contains Moly DTC. Versions sold through Repco and Supercheap are Dexos Approved don't contain Moly DTC.
So which one is better?
While Costco's version does not have Dexos Approval it does contain Moly DTC. Moly DTC (molybdenum disulfide) is an Anti friction wear additive so it is better for the engine and its components less wear/friction, oxidation better fuel economy.
If your car is under warranty (Holden, General Motors, HSV) I would probably go with the version sold through Repco and Supercheap Auto as it's Dexos compliant and won't affect your warranty.
You can buy Moly DTC additive separately Nulon, Liqui Moly sell the additive separately and it to the engine oil of your choice.
But most Fully Synthetic oils these days are usually quite good.
Thanks so much. Very insightful.
Anyone tried this vs castrol edge equivalent?
