why not get JB Hi-Fi offer today and then try your luck in getting the $15 off if you already have an account?

  • Can i get this plan and get apple watch sim for $5?

Trying on chat to apply as an existing M2M sim only Testra customer and they say it's for new customers only…

    • Tried to sign up to the deal online as a new customer. Was required to log in or create a Telstra account. Didn't have one because I wasn't an existing customer, couldn't create one because I'm not an existing customer, and so don't have a Telstra phone or mobile number.

So I went to the local Telstra store. They'd never heard of the deal. Didn't show in their computer. And they couldn't create a Telstra account either because I'm not an existing Telstra customer.

So it seems to be a deal that no-one can actually access.

    • +1

Yeah upgrading from an off contract number via the MyTelstra app doesn’t apply any discount.

      • I've just been told by the online Telstra agent that its only for existing customers. But he was strangely unwilling to point to where on the web page it said that.

So it looks like a fake offer that's not actually available to anyone.

I think the ACCC's term for that is "bait and switch". They offer you a good deal. When you try to take it up they invent a pretext why you can't have it, then try to persuade you to buy something else.

        • +1

Assuming you can’t set up a Telstra ID without an active service, you’d probably be able to get it as an existing customer by adding a new service as I was able to log in and start the process as a new service but didn’t go past the verification stages. Not interested in creating a new service but, so I guess I’ll leave the current plan as month to month.

      • Same problem if you log on to your account on the Telstra site - no discounts visible on the plan change page. Please see my post below re possible requirements mentioned by the online chat associate.

    • I got told the same thing, lady said she'd wished she could apply it but not allowed.

    • Posted my transcript bellow but I tried today and they’ve apparently applied a $15 credit to our existing plan.

    • I had the same experience. When I pointed out that none of this is mentioned on the Telstra website terms I was told:

"I'm sorry for the confusion. I will share this feedback to our team.
Thank you for your valuable feedback.
Thank you for being so kind and understanding.
Let me know if there's anything else that you need help on and will definitely get it sorted for you."

But offered me no solution or recourse. A bit disappointing!

  • Signed up to port back from Woolworths mobile, wasn't given the option to either choose a new number or keep my existing - I'm guessing that will happen when I eventually receive the eSIM (hopefully).

PS, even if choosing eSIM they still post it to you in the mail and can't just email the QR code lmao, wtf…

    • I signed up to this and was also not asked for porting details. Checked with Telstra who are saying that a number cannot be ported to the new service as the details weren't provided in the sign-up process even though they weren't asked for. Their suggestion is to cancel and try again.

      • Did you end up solving this, I'm also not getting an option to port in

        • Current understanding is that the order needs to be cancelled/redone via support to include porting details. Awaiting call back from Telstra.

    • I had the same problem. I was able to sign up via online chat and they ported my number and applied the $15 discount for 12 months.

  • I'm an existing customer and spoke on live chat. The person helping me had this to say:

"The S15 discount a month is currently available and it can be availed online or through the store as it also has requirements that needs to be submitted. I suggest to go to the store with this. Here are the details: Customer must:
Hold valid Health Care card issued by Department of Human Services (Centrelink)
Provide the following information before any credits can be given:
Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN), as shown on their card
    Surname and first name
    Date of birth
    Postcode"

I'm not sure whether this is correct or not, but he advised that trying to sign up to the offer online would add a new plan to my account rather than replacing an existing plan. This seems to be correct as logging into my account does give me the option to switch plans but none of the discounts are displayed. I'm wondering whether signing up to a new plan, then cancelling my current one and transferring my existing number across would be possible…

  • Note the $40 small plan does not have 5G access

    • Is 5G worth it? (Probably yes, I wondered the same about 4G when it first became a thing and now I can't do without it).

Signed up for the small plan regardless, my phone doesn't have 5G and it's still going strong so not in a rush to upgrade.

      • If you had a phone that supported it, were in an area that has it active, and you needed faster speeds, sure, it's likely worth the extra $10.
Or if you had mediocre signal indoors on 4G and wanted more speed, you might get it on this, depending on phone and carrier setup.

If OzBargain has a Telstra rep, perhaps this thread should be pointed out to them so they can see how poorly it reflects on the company. Basically everyone who has talked to any Telstra agents has got a different and conflicting answer.

  • I've been on this Optus deal for a few years now, but I feel Optus are getting progressively slower and shitter, and I end up donating 50-50GB per month anyway. I'm tempted to come back to Telstra…

Existing long-term customer, and managed to get it applied to my account via the mobile app chat. We'll see if its applied next bill.

    • May I ask how you worded your request? I'm currently on one of the plans listed (without the discount) and am chatting to them now but the rep is saying the deal is not visible at the Telstra link supplied above.

  • +1

Told via online chat that this was only available as an offer for Telstra Day and this has expired.

Love how a $49B company can't get a consistent message for this!!!

    • Hmmm! Then you should have told them, why is the link still active and without any special conditions listed. But totally agree, their digitisation initiative is not going the way they hoped for,. They messed up my online move to e sim as well.

    • I ended up just accepting the $5 per month discount they offered on chat (instead of the $15 in the deal) and dropped my plan down. Not ideal but still a saving

Just got a credit without much effort for my wife’s $55 plan, taking it down to $40. I only posted the one message on the My Telstra App

Hello. I just saw a new offer on Telstra’s homepage where there is a $15 discount for 12 month sim only plans. Is it possible to apply this discount as an existing customer to an off contract phone. Looking to apply it to my plan for number XXX

The offers the one at https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/sim-only-15-offer

Checked my phone an hour or two later and this was the response

Hello, I can certainly help you with your concern. Are you referring to $15 for mobile service number ending with XXX? If so, I have just added credit of $15 which would be valid for 12 months.

Hopefully that all applies properly. Nice and easy if so

    • +1

Thanks! Copy pasted this exactly into chat and got the same response and $15 credit for 12 months!

      • +2

Glad at least one other person had some luck :)

    Online chat:

    Advised

The offer is only available for new mobile plans and is an invite-only offer. You must receive an email about the $15 credit in order for you to be eligible for the plan and it's only available for new mobile service.

One more Telstra agent. One more version of what the "facts" are about this deal. That makes it look like each Telstra agent is just inventing whatever story will fob off the person they are dealing with.

The fact is that if this deal is on Telstra's web site it should say exactly what conditions are associated with it. And it doesn't say there are any conditions.

      • Haha. totally agree.
Reminds me of Monkey Island sword fighting.

    • Tried again via phone this time.

      Story was somewhat consistent -
should have received an email to be eligible.
only for new services (or from another network)

not going to spend more time on it. good luck!

      • I saw your reference to the deal being available to customers coming from another network.

So I tried again on Telstra chat.

After an hour an a half all I could extract out of the Telstra agent was that yes it is a deal available to new customers. But only new customers who already have an existing active Telstra service.

        • ahh apologies Gordon.

geez the fine print is getting finer.

          • +1

@redwiggle: Absolutely no need for you to apologise.

What I'm going to try now is this. I sign up to the cheapest Telstra prepaid plan available. Activate it. Use the number they allocate me to get a Telstra ID. And use that ID to sign up online to the deal. Then not renew the prepaid plan at the end of the first month. Just hoping that the deal isn't removed from the web site before I can do that.

Edit. Actually I think I just had a better idea. Telstra has pre-paid deals at the moment. There's a $60 for 40GB on 5G - repeat on 5G - pre-paid plan available online that is reduced to $48 and gives you 65GB data for the first 3 months. If I get that one just to get a Telstra ID I can get the 65GB of data the first month and make absolutely certain that my phone will get Telstra 5G at my address before I port my phone number over to Telstra.

            • @GordonD: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/673656

Sorry if I missed it, but if you are a brand new customer have you considered a port in deal like the one I’ve linked to that comes with a pretty sizeable gift card. The plan in this link costs more but you get 5G coverage and if the $500 gift card is of no use, I’m sure you can sell it for $400-$450 on any market place. A number of people also have had success getting an additional $10 off once ported in, as per chats there, taking them down to $59.

Sorry if you’ve covered this already. Reason I was keen for this plan is my wife has a current contract and we didn’t want to go through the hassle of porting out and back in after 30 days to be eligible for a new customer deal. If I was in your shoes and not with Telstra, for me something like the JB deal would be more appealing I’d say.

              • @Smigit: Thanks for the suggestion. I did consider the gift card deals. If there's something you want that the gift card would pay for its a great deal. But I dismissed it because there wasn't anything I wanted to spend $500 on that that company sells. I'd just be wasting $500. And I can't afford to waste $500. Not after someone gave me the christmas eve present of chucking a rock through my $1000 to fix front window. To be honest though, I hadn't considered going the gift card route, then trying to sell it.

        • This gets even stupider, I am an existing customer and want to take out a new plan for my son, but it won't allow me to use it. Defaults to full price when I sign in.

  • +2

In case it helps anyone else, I thought I'd share my journey applying this. It was actually good timing as my $15 credit that I had negotiated two years ago just expired!

I called Telstra and explained that I'd like to reinstate my $15 credit, and told them about the $15 off promotion on the website OP posted. After exploring it themselves, they agreed that they should be able to honour it. When it actually came time do doing so, they said that their system wouldn't allow them to as this offer is for existing customers who are porting a new number to their account, and was invitation only (yet another different response). I politely told the agent I was speaking with that if it's offered on Telstra's website and doesn't have that condition stipulated anywhere, then they should come up with a workaround to honour it. They offered $10 credit as a 'save' or retention deal. I asked to speak to a supervisor.

When I spoke to the supervisor, I explained (again, politely) that I think not honouring the discount is a breach of our consumer rights as per the ACCC's website and falls under the category of 'Bait Advertising'. I then read him the description of bait advertising and he agreed. After a little bit of problem-solving on their end, they managed to apply the $15 credit to the three mobiles on our account.

Hope this helps someone else! It took >1 hour, but at the end of the day we'll save $540 over the next 12 months. Not a bad hourly wage!

    Hey,
So I just signed up to the $69/month $500gift card deal.
Spoke to Telstra chat about $15 port-in and linked the Telstra site OP posted and I told them a staff member said I would get $15 port in.

They said it wasnt eligible because jbhifi deal is different but they applied $10 credit per month and a $60credit to the account ($5*12 months)

I was lucky to get this on first chat.
Just be friendly and keep trying

  • +2

Thank you OP. Will post my experience below.

I am an existing customer Telstra customer, SIM only and out of contract.

Went through Telstra chat and mentioned I wanted the $40 plan. Just as I was about to confirm to change plans, I saw that it was the Small (S) $55/month plan, so I questioned the agent that it should be $40/month for first 12 months.

He informed me that the Small (S) plan is $55/month and there was no discount. After I sent him the link to the promo, he reviewed and then applied it, no questions asked.

    This was the final plan:

Mobile which is a Plan Change charged at $55 per month.
it has an offer attached which reduces the cost by $40 per month.

Please note that any existing discounts or bonus offers will not carry over to the new plan/s.
The total price for this Plan Change will be $55 per month this includes a discount of $15 for 12 months

The remaining services on your account will be charged at the usual monthly cost and under their current terms and conditions.

The total cost for all services on your account including today's changes (all-new, recontracting, and existing including offers/discounts) will be $40 for 12 months after 12 months it will revert to its normal price which is $55

    • Why not getting the JB plan, it’s cheaper.

      • Similar to what OP mentioned, I don't want to stuck with a JB giftcard which I may not use.

        • Can easily sell it @ 10% discount.

      Thanks for sharing your experience!

      I tried again:
      - at first got the standard "This is for new customers only"
      - challenged this as it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the website, and also pointed out that it can't be for new customers since a Telstra ID is required
      - the consultant checked to get approval
      - Plan changed to the Upfront Small $55 plan with $15 credit per month (for 12 months)

The final plan text was identical to as what you posted above.

      Thank you!

      • +1

Congrats! I don't know why they make it so difficult for existing customers, it's like they don't want our business.

  • Yeah looks like when you sign in with your Telstra ID, the deal doesn't apply. Annoying as I want to buy a new plan for my son, but have it linked to my bill.

  • After 4 hours on chat with them I think I have WON the best BS statement as to why I cant have this deal. I waited over an hour for this, and I quote:

Thank you for staying connected, I am sorry to keep you waiting. As I have checked here the website you have visited is not coming from Telstra. Please check this link below to see our legitmate pricing. https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/sim-only-plans"

I then questioned, what do you mean not coming from Telstra, in which I got the responce….

"Telstra have not released this type of discount and by far many customers are being scammed through the website that you have visited."

Ummmm, no, this is the Telstra Website….

I am now taking this further, as mentioned above, in breach of ACCC laws etc.

  • I just tried to switch my current $69 JB HiFi/Good Guys plan to the Small $55 plan -$15 via the Telstra App chat.
The guy checked and came back to me saying he tried to do the plan change but it's not coming up on his end and all he can see is the normal plan without $15 discount.
He asked me to wait for their system to be updated and that I would receive a notification when the plan is available.
I'll give them 3 weeks (just before next month kicks in) and I'll try again, now that I've read that other OzBargainers got it

  • I got it. Used an aforementioned text slab, then said the old “you’re baiting and switching. My next stop is the ACCC and Telecom Ombudsman”. Nek minnit, $15 on top of my corporate discount 🙏🏼

    • How?? I tried via chat & calling with the above text slab too. Chat couldn’t get approval to apply the discount after 2 hours, so a complaint manager is going to call. Over the phone the agent would not budge saying it’s expired and was invite only, to which I repeated that’s not what’s advertised, and it’s still live on the Telstra site so it’s not expired and is bait advertising and in breach of ACCC laws, still wouldn’t budge so filed a complaint. I don’t see why they fight it, it’s live and without conditions…

      • +1

No idea. I did try a different agent after the initial one was all over the shop. This is what I said when they said no:
Hi - the offer is still live. This is what the ACCC call a “bait and switch” and should be available to everyone. I feel I will have to go to the ombudsman as I’m not being respected as a customer

  • Just tried this as well. They wouldn't give it as it's apparently expired and they don't do 12 month plans anymore (even though everyone can access this site). They don't even care if the ombudsman is contacted.

  • Just wanted to update that I just had the apply the discount to my account today after using the ACCC line. And they filed a complaint on my behalf. I was then contacted by their complaints team and it was added to my account

  • I keep going around in circles. I was told "It's a new plan, it's not on the system yet, just wait and try again.
Then I tried again, I was told it's only for new customers, and was offered a $5 discount.
I challenged because it requires a Telstra ID. I got transferred to someone else who said, ok then, you can have it if you sign up to the Upfront Plan, same deal $40 for 40GB and unlimited calls for 12 months.
I agreed and got transferred to someone else who said give me 10 minutes, then never got back to me.
I tried again today, was asked for a Centrelink card to apply the discount.
I said it wasn't a Centrelink discount, then told that for people transitioning from the JB-HiFi plan, there is actually a $10 discount, not $15.
I just replied I wanted the plan with $15 discount as agreed
Now I'm being told that the offer is only available if you were sent the link directly.
I just tried the "Bait and switch" card but it didn't seem to bite. They're asking me where I got the ling from, I'm not sure what to answer…

    • Well I settled for a $10 discount after running around in circles for 3 days straight
