Connecting to Remote Desktop (Windows 10) via Internet (VPN)

Hi all,

Can someone point me to a guide that shows how to setup a remote desktop connection which is secure?

Want to access my PC while on the road. Currently I can just log in from any device within the network.

I found these two guides - one is through VPN via Windows 10 and the other uses OpenVPN on the router?

Both are a bit confusing.

I have a Xiaomi AX1800 router and SurfShark VPN.

Thanks

  • Install Teamviewer

    • Only when I get an sms from overseas call centre about my explorer.exe high CPU usage, and they can um fix that

  • What exact internet connection do you have? mobile plus some nbn are behind CGNat and never will work for on site vpn.

Likewise, dynamic ips are also changing so also an issue for onsite vpn.

Teamviewer or similar are possibly better.

Just install Chrome Remote Desktop. No need to make any changes on your routers/firewalls and it will even work behind CGNAT.

    • Thanks, will try that.

      • +1 For Chrome Remote Desktop.

I use it exclusively for all work and home PCs for several specific reasons:

        1) It works even without a user logged in
        2) The logged on user is independent of the Remote Desktop user - I can access staff PCs without them having to interrupt workflows to enable access etc
        3) It is extremely reliable, and I can be assured it'll work
        4) no IP/DNS/router setup required. It works as long as the computer has internet

One additional factor is that I have every critical PC set to auto turn-on via BIOS, but that's not always an option for many situations.

  • Chrome Remote Desktop worked pretty great for me. I spent about a year doing remote work for an overseas job, and occasionally logging in to a desktop in the office. CRD tended to be pretty reliable and I used it almost exclusively, even though the company preferred Windows RDP via VPN.
Reason being that CRD didn't require a VPN, and would maintain the connection more reliably. It would scale down the image quality when the connection was bad and keep things running, where RDP would tend to just drop off.

Teamviewer also a good option, I'd set them both up as backups in case the Google account logs off or something. But I'm not sure if that ever happened.

Other thing to try is see if you can reboot remotely, or if theres a power cut, and if you can get in again before Windows loads.
Pretty sure this was never an issue either.

Oh the downside with CRD was that it needs a monitor plugged in. Didn't seem to work on a headless machine, but might have changed since then. And it could be a bit laggier if you are actually doing productivity stuff.
Is this for actual work, or just sometimes jumping on to get some files and such?

mostly monitoring temps, and switching to personal pc during work for some productivity stuff

  • I use a ssh tunnel instead of VPN.

Also just use a free dynamic DNS provider, then it doesn't matter if your home IP changes.
