Commbank Charging Fees to Use The Teller

Hi,

I found a strange charge on my Commbank account which after chatting with Commbank live chat they said it was a $3 fee for using the teller. I figured this may be new as I only ever use the teller if I need to withdraw 10K+ (over the ATM limit) to make big purchases like a car and those previous occasions never had any fee. Although that was dated around a year ago. Their customer service rep didn't really help much by copying and pasting a script of using their ATMs in future to avoid the fee but dismisses the fact that there's a limit. Thoughts? Has anyone else run into the same thing?

As far as I remember (e.g. in the last 15 years or so), CommBank has always slugged fees for "assisted withdrawals" (including withdrawals at a teller) for at least some of their transaction accounts.

I had a look on the Wayback Machine and randomly chose a date in 2008, and back then, if you had a Streamline e-Access account, you'd be charged $2 for "assisted withdrawals".

  • I can't recall when I last used a teller but I know they and most/all major banks do charge an "assisted transaction" fee.

If you are after a big four account go with NAB. Much the same account as CBA offers, except without the charges.

    • Cheers, I'll have a look at this. As much as I'd like to move solely to ING/Up only, I feel tied down for that off chance I may need to do a large withdrawal/deposit.

Westpac does not charge any fees for branch staff assisted withdrawals for Westpac Choice accounts. It says so in their Terms and Conditions (page 43), plus I’ve made a couple of branch staff assisted withdrawals in the past and was definitely not charged a fee.

I can confirm this. Also, MyState does not charge.

          • @Ms Bargainer: I would be quite surprised if MyState charged fees for assisted withdrawals. I mean, they basically rely on the fact that they are a more customer-focused bank!

          • @Ms Bargainer: MyState not charging is great, but only seven branches all in Tasmania is not so great.

Westpac charges $5 per month unless you meet certain exemptions, making it a bad choice compared to NAB which doesn't have a monthly charge at all.

          • @Baysew: Ahhh yeah true. I always meet the monthly fee waiver criteria, but not everyone does!

I prefer Westpac anyway, because NAB’s ATM and Coin Deposit Machine network sucks in my area.

    • Yeah, while I have no love for any banks, I have found NAB pretty good with this. One of the first (major banks) I saw that removed the monthly service fee, ATM fee, overdraft fee.

  • Legacy banks charging people fees to withdraw money is a scam like paying zero interest on savings.

So many people just love getting scammed by banks.

    • but they're the first place they run to when they need a loan?

I wouldn't worry about a $3 fee, when we're getting rammed up the wazoo from so many other places, gov't are just one that spring to mind.

    Geez that's dodgy.
Not exactly like they're skint on profits.

Yeah those poor banks….. Doing it tough with record profits year after year, how could they afford to pay for teller staff!? Oh wait…

They charged the dead, so this should be of no particular surprise:

  • Why are you looking at something from a year ago

    • +1

I probably worded that badly. I was recently charged the teller fee and I compared that to another time I used a teller a year ago.

  • +2

CBA would much rather you don’t use the teller, even if it earns them some extra revenue. It’s all about trying to push customers away from branches to online channels

  • +2

I left CBA because they kept on charging $2 to withdraw from their ATM, not teller, from the account i had with them for some 15 years.

Started off as a Dolomite Account.

    • +1

Are you referring to international atm withdrawals? CBA don't charge fees for withdrawals at their own ATMs

      • Maybe not now, but at one point in time, they may have (about 15 years ago) as I was charged $2 (for ATM) x 4 or 5 times before I got fed up.

Dolomite account was their tactic to get kids, which I was at the time, to join many years ago. Held onto the account and used it fine for many years afterwards until that $2 ATM fee. Maybe not ATM fee, but I was getting slugged $2 for withdrawals of AUD from a local account.

  • You had me when you said you were after CASH. The contents of my wallet were unchanged for about 6months over lockdown :-).
My personal favourite is when CBA charged me $35 as a Courtesy Charge (!) when I overdrew my cheque account
I’m just waiting for colesworth to start charging to use a cashier!

    • 100% I prefer digital over physical cash. But when you purchase a car, cash is usually king. For a half decent car you'd be looking at 10K+, maybe more now with Covid pricing. I can understand they if charge you for constantly using them for miniscule tasks like withdrawing a $50/$100 here and there. But if I'm using them once every couple of years for an amount over their ATM limit, it's a bit ridiculous.

        Agree
I had a neighbour who would call the racv every morning for WEEKS to jump start his car. I reckon he was solely responsible for racv introducing annual call-out limits

  • This happened when they got ride of complete access and tried to move everyone to smart access.

  • Merged from Transaction Fee for Withdrawl for Commbank Branch

I needed cash over $1000. I thought ATM has $1000 limit, so I went to Commonwealth Bank branch and was charged transaction fee.

Are you guys aware of it. Is it weird? The explanation I got was, human assisted me.

      https://www.commbank.com.au/banking/everyday-account-smart-a…

      Withdrawal fees
      Description
      Fee
Assisted withdrawals in a branch, agency or through telephone banking.
      $3
Cheques written by you and negotiated through the clearing system (excluding those cashed over-the-counter at a CommBank branch).
      $3

    • I know some banks used to charge for over the counter transactions (eg, SGB) then stopped (I think to try to attract more customers / business). To avoid the fee, I would withdraw from an ATM up to the limit on two separate days. Perhaps some have reinstated the fee.
