Teenagers Wanting to Learn Korean

My teenage kids would like to learn Korean over the school holidays. Can someone recommend a reputable website where tutors (preferably living in Australia) can teach over Zoom? Thanks.

  • I didn't realize school holidays lasted that long…

    • They want to start in the holidays but will hopefully continue longer term.

In that short time? Use Duolingo. Free, interactive and fun.

    • They've started on that but now want some face to face tutoring.

      • Have you checked local workers association, uni summer courses or dept of education courses? Sorry only know what runs in SA

    • I didn't have a good experience with Superprof hence my question to ask for the OzB community's recommendation.

        • I found that Superprof put up a fake profile of someone in my area by doing an IP address lookup. The same fake profile appeared in one of their overseas sites claiming to be a local there. They also charged me $49 even when no tutors were engaged. Fortunately I used PayPal and claimed the money back.

        • Have you used them before?

          • @skimp: Yes I found a maths tutor from there, he was pretty good they are mostly qualified professionals

Italki.com looks good for online language tuition. (I haven't actually used it, but am planning on doing so soon 🤣) You can filter by location to only look for tutors in Australia, although to be honest not sure why you would if you're looking for a Korean teacher.

    Sounds like a hoot

  • Watch K-pop videos.

Well if so, you’re in luck! One of the most effective ways to learn Korean is to study Kpop song lyrics.

The great thing about this study method is that song lyrics are easy to memorize. If you learn Korean with Kpop, then the new grammar or vocabulary that you pick up from the songs can help speed up your Korean learning and also make learning more fun.

Can imagine someone walking into an ER in Seoul having a heart attack and singing a k-pop song about how their heart is broken. I wonder if that'll translate well?

  • OP: Let us know if you find the perfect scenario for teaching. Members of my household also want to learn too.

  • Useless fact.

I thought Dynamite was sung in Korean until a friend corrected me. My mind was blown.

    Send them to 🇰🇵

Or do they want to learn it because kpop women are hot?

  • Strathfield, Campsie have a lot of Koreans including students. Perhaps an exchange with them where they learn English from your kids and your kids learn Korean from them?

    • EVERY restaurant in Strathfield is Korean. Go there, practise ordering and strike up a conversation.
