Scanpan Classic 7 Piece Knife Set (6 Knives + Block) $139 with Free Delivery

70

I saw a Furi Knife block posted by another user so thought I'd find another aesthetically challenged knife block with good knives in it and run a special. The kit is

9cm Paring Knife
14cm Tomato/Cheese Knife
15cm Utility Knife
20cm Cook's Knife
20cm Bread Knife
20cm Carving Knife
Silver Knife Block

If you don't have a sharpener or honing product I'd recommend one too, because your impulse may be to burn the block and put the knives in the drawer.

Happy Long Weekend!

  • so are these as good/better then the Furi?

IMO? I prefer the Furi, the reports (bearing in mind I don't own either) suggest that the edge holds better on the Furi steel. I also prefer the feel, but that's something tough to convey over the internet. Sorry I can't give a better answer!

      • I love also love my Furi's easy to clean, nicely weighted. Although can't say I've tried the IKEA ones.

      • I read reviews the 'stainless' steel of the Furi can rust and that some lines are mediocre YMMV

    • love scanpan (which i use at home) coz they are heavy. furi is lighter. so it comes to your personal preference on how it weighs in your hand.

  • I've got a furi chef style knife, it's the last one i'll put out of the drawer. Often I choose my Ikea bought knives over it. I don't like the weight or the thickness of the blade. IMHO i'll take these scanpan knives over the furi but in reality, i'll buy 1 multipurpose Global knife over any of these. I use Global now and everything else just feels like i'm trying to cut with a plastic butter knife in comparison.

and to be fair, those Ikea knives are really impressive, they feel cheap but they cut like an expensive knife.

    • Recently got a Global set, how do you sharpen yours?

old skool method conveyed via the Global Sensai himself

We have 4 Scanpan knives and like them a lot.
Can be made ultra sharp and seem to hold an edge ok. Have a solid feel.
I'm not allowed to put them in the dishwasher.
If I bought 6 more I could do what I want but would have too many knives.

  • Id take Furi over Scanpan and Global anyday. Furi are a single piece forged knife whereas the other two are welded. Scanpan should stick to frypans and Global have had a great marketing team behind them. My Furi's are nearly 10 yrs old and retain a beautiful edge.

From what I've seen in store, Furi knives are made in China, Global knives are made in Japan.
(I'm not arguing for either as I haven't used any Furi knives before and am unable to compare them)

Furi are a single piece forged knife whereas the other two are welded.

Actually most global knives are one single piece, not welded. There is no separate handle, just 1 piece stainless steel all the way from blade to end of handle.

Can I pop in and suggest that most Global knives on the market are two or even three pieces. They are sintered which is very, VERY good, but only the (edit:GF) series is forged. Doesn't make them less awesome, just a technical point

Edit: And I've never seen one broken at the tang/blade bit like you see lots of knives break

Oh thanks for the clarification, it looks like it's one piece, my bad.

        • +1

LOL You pick these knives up and they FEEL like one piece, and for all intents and purposes sintered knives are pretty much as reliable as a forged one. I was under the same impression until I researched the Wusthof stuff to find out why it was so much more expensive

Edit: Sidenote, I can't upvote comments today from my Firefox. Don't know if that's something mods care about

Hmm I'm using firefox too and I have been upvoting comments without problems. I'll talk to you by PM.

        • Yeah, if there is a join you can't see it. I got the Ikasu set, which has six different GS, G, and GSF series knives so all of mine must not be forged. Sad face. They still look hot though LOL.

I must be the odd man out with my comment; Got a Scanpan chef 20cm for a Christmas gift. Blade had flaws in it, and it splintered and fractured, only after 2 months of use; no dishwashing machine.
I know how to look after a blade…. i worked as a Chef for 8 years, and only ever seen this happen to cheaper knives (i would of choose a Global or Itami blade if it were me any day. Pay the extra, get better quality and have the sharpness last longer, and sharpen less - you really cant beat Japanese knife craftsmanship IMO ).Yeah this is the most tight ass site on the net, but its better to buy an item once rather than pay for it twice….
On a positive note; At least it was replaced no questions asked, but i hassled them alot, and said I wouldn't except the Scanpan back, and got a global chef 20 replacement instead at no extra cost.
