    Exciting! Lol!

Can't go wrong for free I guess

    • +1

      I agree.
Just "purchased" and saved the book for future reference.

      Nice centerfold…

    • Sure you can!

It's a mistake, IMO, to choose -co$tly- MS SQL Server 2012
over the Free, Open Source (last time I checked) MySQL.

(This "free" is just Microsoft marketing.)

      My 2.2 cents only

PS: Don't take my word for it; to find out why I think so:

You might like talk (free at Stanford's eCorner) by ex-CEO
Marten Mickos, formerly of MySQL AB (ie, the Swedish company,
responsible for creating & marketing MySQL) speaking to
budding entrepreneurs (students in Stanford's eCorner pro-
gram); hear Marten Mickos (currently with Eucalytus.com):

(If you liked that, you'll like Guy Kawasaki's talk better! :-)

(Guy is funny & informative, eg, on Marketing & Apple, Inc.)

      • what if you are developing using asp.net. I agree that SQL Server is equivalent or worse than MySQL but if you're gonna to .NET programming the tight integration of SQL Server is well worth it. Sure MySQL can be made to work with enterprise solution but it doesn't work as well.

BUT Nokia, yahoo and countless other companies are using mySQL so enterprise support is there

      • Yes, find out why from someone who used to represent MySQL, specifically for their marketing……

How about looking at some independent reviews:
        http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1920/microsoft-sql-ser…
        http://www.tometasoftware.com/mysql_vs_sqlserver.asp
        http://www.techrepublic.com/article/mysql-or-sql-server-look…
        http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1757820/c-sharp-mysql-vs-…

Conclusion by most people in the industry: it depends on the situation.

        • That's fair enough, but don't forget the -cost- issue.

There are plenty of non-profits & others (eg, start-ups)
who increase their chances of paying their bills, eg,
by using Free, Open Source software (FOSS).

Cities in Germany are -saving- their residents millions
          by choosing FOSS.

If it's no worse, why -wouldn't- you choose FOSS?
-Except- for habit, [hope of] financial gain, etc

My 2.2. cents, as always. :-)

        • I know about the cost issue, and that's mentioned in all the reviews I listed. Cost is just another factor in determining whether it's appropriate for the situation.

      • In commercial environment, products are rarely chosen based on initial outlay but rather for associated support contract.
Being "open-source" is hardly an advantage, and there are plenty of disadvantages, like a vulnerability being openly publicised.

        • +1

Having a such a vulnerability published could -also- mean
getting more eyes on its source code, so (hopefully) a
quicker solution is implemented to the issue. :-)
