Is This Guy a Gumtree Chargeback Scammer?

Hi, I am just wondering if the following person is a chargeback scammer or not.

This man recently contacted me in hoping to by some shoes i had listed on gumtree, his number stated he was from the us (maryland) and also followed up by sending his photo id which had maryland written on it. What had me suspicious was that he wanted me to ship to nigeria for his cousin. To how true this i am not sure and i am just worried if he chargesback. He is paying by bank transfer and has my bsb/acc no and he wants to pay first. he sent me a selfie as well lol and it is the same in the photo id just still sus because it was out of no where.

Any thoughts?

"I saw your sneakers on gumtree… Still available for sell kindly get back to me with more pictures of it so that we can negotiate on the payment method."

Sent photos

"Hope the shoes is in perfect condition, Am buying the shoes for my cousin, I want you to ship the shoes via Post Office to my cousin address. I'll offer you $450 and $150 for the shipping cost and the total amount will be $600."

"Sends address"

"I'll need your Iban number, bank name, full name and email address so i can proceed with the payment as soon"

I send him

I asked for some verification

"sends photo id and selfie that match"

This was how the convo went down, first time using the app so I am not too sure if this is a chargeback scammer or if there is anyway to determine it.

Update: Cancelled the deal

wanted me to ship to nigeria

    100% a scam

come on.. it could be a legit buyer in america, buying sneakers from gumtree in australia, to get them sent to his cousin in nigeria..

like, thats a completely normal transaction right?

      • +13

It's obviously fake since there was no mention of his cousin being a member of Nigerian royalty

      • I was optimistic at this as well but is there anyway i can verify him or just make it so its not a scam? like precautions or something

          SBOB was being sarcastic.
Honestly, I know you're looking for support since you want to make the sale, but walk away OP.
I mean, you could go ahead and let this be a $450 lesson on internet scams, or you could just skip this fee all together and learn from the comment section.

@zonra: I cancelled the deal already, thank you

          like precautions

          Seriously?
I have no idea how people get scammed by such obvious stuff these days, even when people tell them it's clearly a scam.

        • I was optimistic

Thats not the words I'd use….

@proxity: I got some magic beans, do you want to buy?

            • -1

@WT: Sure I do. I work for the armed forces and am away on deployment in Afghanistan, but magic beans are just what I was looking for.
I will deposit the money directly in your account and get an agent to come and pick them up. Which bank are you with? Please provide details. When can he come and get them?

LOOKKKKKK just don't do it —- SIMPLE
Just don't do it —— comprendo.

Sell on eBay…. you are PROTECTED….. comprendo

Why are people staying up all night worried about a suspicious situation when IT IS!

Just forget about it—— forget about it

    • +1

Still plenty of scams on ebay.

  • What type of scam is this? If he's transferring to a bank account, he can't do a chargeback can he?

    • +2

It's a false transaction. It's called "account flashing". Soon the banks will realise the money does not exist or is fraudulent, and then change all the numbers back.

If the scammer thinks you're dumb\naive enough they will "accidentally" deposit too much money and get you to send some "back" to them at another account as well. So not only do you lose your goods that you paid to ship, but you also give away your money in the deal.

  • Scam.

Gumtree, eBay, Alibaba, Aliexpress, Markeplace. Anywhere this is shown is and will be a scam.

All over the universe it is called a SCAM

  • If your feel the need to ask, generally it’s a scam

  • Yes it is a scam, I got hit by the same scam the email is fake from paypal/bank and they say to release funds you need to send shoes
