PayPal misuse or hack?

Hi ozbargainers
I encountered a new issue after years of use of paypal. Wanted to know if anyone had came across similar issues.

I woke up to realize a paypal payment was done to "PayPal
http://www.paypal.com/pro
[email protected]" in CHF currency which is swiss franc worth 25 AUD. I obviously dont have any auto payments setup nor did i make the payment. Contacting paypal saying unauthorized use was denied with no explanation. In this case, i am wondering if my account was hacked and i should close this account and open new.

On the sidenote, my email from paypal were going straight to trash in GMAIL since last year but i really did not cared much but i fixed it last month as there was a rule created to send every paypal email to trash which i never did.

Please share some thoughts if you were across something similar. Money is not a big deal at the moment but i find it strange that after years of trusting paypal with my money how did such simple hack occurred.

Change your password and enable 2fa security if you're not already using it.

    • Its already on.

Drag a PayPal email from your trash to your primary inbox and then they will continue to go to your inbox.

    Gmail 101

    • I fixed it last month. There was a rule to sent every paypal email to trash.

Did you create the rule? Perhaps it's your Gmail that has been compromised.

        • No, but i dont understand how does gmail being compromised will allow someone to send money from paypal. Email address are same with different passwords

@Cmaz: Once they're in your Gmail they might change your PayPal password

            • @Quantumcat: True but i can still acess my paypal just fine with old password. I normally check paypal every night as partner uses it for uber trips never noticed any charges except this one till now.

              • @Cmaz:

partner uses it for uber trips

Maybe your uber account has been compromised?

          • @Cmaz: Did you save your PayPal password into the Google password sync?

            • @thatonethere: If you mean like autofill. Yes

              • +1

@Cmaz: Well if they were able to login to your Gmail to make a rule they could also login and see your saved passwords?

                  • @Cmaz: I think you have the answer to your problem here. You need to change your Gmail password, and ensure your GMail is logged out on other devices GMail logged in devices. Checking this may also confirm you’ve been hacked. You should also assume the hacker has copied all your passwords from Google, such as PayPal password, so change all those.

  • If the payment was made with your credit card you can ask for a chargeback from your credit card provider. That might make PayPal close your account but that's what you want anyway

    • No i had bank account setup as preferred along with credit card and it came out that way.

      • That's unfortunate. Lucky it was only $25

        • Yeah
Just surprised even with those security layers nothing i could have done to recover it. Haha

          • @Cmaz:

            Haha

            Why is it funny?

            • @jv: The fact that despite security layers and claim that i did not authorize the transaction, i still cannot recover my money

              • @Cmaz: I would consider that sad, not funny.

                • @jv: Well the amount was not drastic to be sad (lucky) but the whole thing was bit funny and unexpected as i always thought paypal is safe

It's possible that another service for which you have PayPal authorized for payments has been compromised. I'd check which companies you have authorized here:

    https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/autopay/

    • Yes i did check that but none seemed suspicious i went through 25 auto payment setup and manually deleted them but nothing suspicious

I was more thinking that if any of those services were hacked, it could result in a PayPal charge without your PayPal account itself being hacked. You might be able to tell by logging into each of them and checking the order history but it would probably be a bit of work if you have so many.

        • Yeah might be. But can paypal charge me for my past transaction which i dont know when i made it.

Funny this, this charge does not give me option to contact seller or anything or at least i could have asked for explanation

"with no explanation" from PayPal ????? WTF. If you are claiming fraudulent activity, they should be providing full details, so you can verify & the charge be fully investigate, should they not???

    • apparently they dont care.
