Powerful Laptop for Programming? Budget $1200

I missed out on black Friday deal but I'm eyeing up the Dell laptop 40% sale. Should I pull the trigger now or wait for boxing Day?

My requirements
16GB
512GB-1TB SSD
i7 but open to Ryzen 7

Was looking at the Lenovo education deal but can't access cos I'm not a student

This is my first post so please remove if I broke any rules here. TIA

  • 512MB-1TB SSD

512MB won't get you very far past the BIOS :D

    • Maybe minimal Linux distro

    • Haha fixed it now

Elaborate more on "programming". To be honest your current question is as vague as "what's the best gaming laptop"

Are you doing graphic rendering, MATLAB simulation, python scripting etc? What does powerful mean to you?

        • Python scripting, using docker, etc. No graphic rendering

  • I also need a similar laptop to work from home please. I have edu account. Running crystal reports, Teams meetings, connect to remote servers and PowerPoint presentation. Min 16gb RAM and 512 GB HDD with decent graphics. AMD or Intel. Which ever is faster and 15 inch minimum screen. TIA.

    32Gb RAM minimum. Always!

    • Agree 32Gb min for now, but if you want to speed things up 64Gb and setup a RAM drive with your compilers on it or use the extra to cache the compiler.

Also when using docker depending on how many containers you need to run and do dev at the same time 32Gb is okay for now, but 2 years ago 16GB was okay.

Make sure you can upgrade to 64GB without throwing the exiting 32Gb out, but this may not be feasible with a laptop.

      • my top tip is always max out the RAM on every computer you buy.
It might not be available a few years down the track when you want to buy some more.

        • It get real expensive to get 128GB over the last 10 years to max some of the motherboard/chipsets I have had. Some have maxed out at 64GB, but some were 128GB and some of the freebie laptops maxed at 12 94 soldered and an 8Gb sodim).

I agree toy need to very wary of memory may not be available in x years, but normally for what I see x is 2 years and can be longer if you know where to look.

Wait for Black Friday next year, will be better spec for the price… or even the boxing day sales next year.

      • @upbeat My head was in a diffrent space then.. unwell family members and I got made redundant now but yes, that $998 I would jump on now. I need to keep looking for something similar. Thx for you advice.

        • but all these comments say amd is better than i7 so its a good thing we both didn't buy the 998 one

          • @upbeat: Ha! Ha! Ordered and officeworks canceled the order so back to square one :-((

            • @FBI: sorry to hear that, i'm waiting for lenovo deals.. whyd they cancel

              • @upbeat: I think they had too many orders for 998$ and couldn't fulfill it so they refunded. Will keep looking :-))

    • Sorry, I meant to upvote you.. how do I go back..

There are a number of threads in the last 3 months where people have asked similar/the same question. I would search OX bargain and read the other threads as they have allot of info in them that is relevant.

  • Do Dell au and Lenovo education usually have good boxing Day deals?

  • I pulled the trigger on this one. Thank you everyone for your words of advice.

    • Hey FBI did you manage to buy anything during boxing day sale

      • No mate. I didn't see anything good. A lot of gaming laptop deals without webcam or with bad webcam. So I am still looking. Let us know if u see anything please and a happy new year to you and yours !
