  • Has anyone had experience with this retailer?

    • +1

Ive brought from them a few times before, pretty quick and painless, shipped the same day, cant ask for much more then that.

      • $100 store credit will be added to your account to thank you for posting, please reply PM.

  • Good deal! Bet tons of people who didn't buy from Megabuy are happy.

  • shipping to WA is $35. Not as cheap….

    • QLD shipping is $25. Guess you can put free pickup in Sydney rep.

      • If it's like another Aussie vendor (HT - from whom we've bought N40L's earlier), it might be cheaper to ship 2 of them, so - if it is - maybe buy with/for a colleague or friend in same suburb or town… & save.

I see that it is - a bit - like HT:

        1x $29

        2x $46 (ie, $23 each, save $6 on each = $12 on pair)

(That's for -this- deal & shipped to Adelaide)

        • 22 for syd. metro shipping… hmmm

i-tech is the same company as spotit (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66815) according to whois information

he he MegaBuy has got a few webpage retail channels plus eBay

see any resemblance to these known ones?

      • Someone actually asked them if that was their websites also. they said something about using the same online systems as other so its a template of somesort.

        • +1

But do you actually believe that?

        • Ofcourse I did, they're are a favourite amongst OcBargainers.

        • Interestingly enough but spotit.com.au and itech are registered under the same person.

        • We are not affiliated with megabuy nor we know them at all. Our online system is built and maintained in house. However www.i-tech.com.au and www.spotit.com.au is under the same company, with different sales and marketing dept.

Thank you for the information. We have linked SpotIt and i-Tech together on OzBargain to prevent store reps from circumvent the store rep posting limit. We would have remove it as a duplicated deal if reported earlier. However as this deal has also surfaced to the front page & attract more discussions, we'll leave it here for now.

  • I'll get this one for sure.

Been running my core 2 duo server 24/7 for the past 2 years, and nothing happened, the last few days, thinking about saving electricity by turning it off at night, and last night 2 of Hard drives died. Bugger.

    • it would be 4 or 5 years before your enerygy savings broke even with the $219 purchase cost. if you wanted to auto switch off at night you could use the bios to wake up the computer at say 8am everyday.

      • you can use your bios to wake up the computer??? AMAZING! I'm gonna reboot right now to find this.

Ordered one last Friday, hopefully its ready tomorrow for pickup :)

  • got mine last week from spotit.com.au

just waiting on when ready to pick up. although i did pay by bpay so make take a extra day or two.

anyone know on instructions on how to use ESXi with RAID?

  • itech, spotit, etc all have the same head office in Sydney

Note I bought one today but the guy said they DO NOT HAVE STOCK IN THE SYDNEY OFFICE.

You have to wait 24-48 hours for them to move it from their warehouse to the Sydney office (Ultimo) before you can pickup….

    • thats normal for this company, the office is just the office, and they only get in things that need picking up. Ive ordered from them (pickup) a few times

  • So should I install linux or Windows 7 on this if I want it to be a file server?

    • +1

I installed FreeNAS on my N36L and I'm very happy with it. Works like a treat.

    • Freenas works well as an alternative. Serves macs better than windows 7, eg for time machine backups.

    • +1

Probably best to run Windows Home Server, not Windows 7

      It's about $50… http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Windows+Hom…

  • ordered Friday too and hoping to pick it up tomorrow

argh! stop making me want to get another microserver 8( evil evil ppl! 8(

    • i dare you to buy another!

    • You don't want or need it. But you will get one as OzB dictates you to.

  • i bought my htpc from itech, came reasonably quickly

  • +1

Tempting to buy my 3rd one :P

  • What is the use of these "microservers" Are they made to play games?

    • +4

no, its only used for network storage, similar to storing files on your computer and sharing it, if you've got a few computers around the house, its a good place to store movies and music.. if you've only got 1 pc, your better off getting an external hard drive and parking it behind your computer and turning it on whenever you need it.. with a microserver like this comes added power consumption, noise, etc… don't buy one if you are new to computers because it gets techy to install an operating system etc..

      • Thanks

Forget getting any levels of service from i-Tech. They do not answer warranty details. I bought a USB Disk Rack from them and the power supply is not working. They did not even answer any of my questions.

    • We stand behind all our products and all our comes with warranty. Would you like to PM me your transaction id or RA number so I could look into your warranty case for you?

      • It would be nice if your account accepted PM's (User > Contact > i-techcomau is not accepting e-mails). My original order number is 1144388 for an Astone RD230. Tried to send you guys emails about the power supply for this unit and that the power light on the adapter turns off whenever you try to use it. Please PM me with contactable details.

        • All tech specialist shops are like that, that's why you pay such a low price for their products. If you want service, go buy it from Harvey Norman for double. Is it that hard to understand that paying a low price is going to get you poor service? sheesh.

        • sorry, didn't know I couldn't accept PM before. I have also told our technician to give you a call in regards to your faulty item.

  • Custom firmware allows you to swap out the optical SATA port for a AHCI HDD = 5x2TB in mine.

  • I'm a neebie here. Excuse my ignorance, but I need another home computer. I know this is a microserver to use for network storage. But can I just buy a hard drive an add windows 7 and use it as a computer. Or do I need to buy other "bits" as well?

    • hey neebie

    • +1

No good as a computer really. Doesn't have the power needed to play games and stuff, they are really used for sharing files. Wait til someone more techie answers you, but there is a reason it's called a server.

      • +1

Depends on what you want to do with it i suppose, for general web browsing, word processing, general office style tasks they are perfect, anything more though then you will want to look at something a touch more powerful.

    • You could if you installed Windows XP, but you can only use it for basic web browsing.

  • Very tempting nice find thanks mate.

Hi weberkshire, love this site, bought a few things but this is first post.

  • Two quick questions for those who own one, is this capable of playing 1080p content, and how quiet is it?

    • +1

you will need dedicated video. Should be able to pick up a card for very little. I think i paid $50 for the video card in mine

      • Thanks for the response mate. Mind if I ask what GPU you installed? Was worried that it wouldn't be possible, with such a small PSU?

        • +1

Go with a Radeon HD5450 or HD6450 depending on other HW installed. You will also need a usb sound card or route audio through HDMI on GPU.

        • With a GPU installed will the 2GB EEC handle 1080p?

  • Can anyone recommend some cheap RAM for this?

  • +1

Go nvidia for video if you plan on running Linux - better driver support

Re ram look for 2 x 4 gb Kingston value ram souls be about $50 for that Plus $50 for gfx card (gt520 I believe)

  • can this do RAID 5? also if i install WHS2011, is there any download manager i can put in later? (ie bittorent, emule, usenet, etc) ? also ftp/printer server capabilities? and access files from web anywhere?

  • Just picked mine up from Ultimo - not great parking there and the carpark attendant for the building ushers you out of the loading bay area quickly.

Anyway pretty happy, gives me something to tinker with in the next day or two…

  • Is this thing capable of torrenting? Just a basic box (we don't download much)

  • I've got an N36L and this is what mine does:

    I have:
    3x WD 2TB Black HDD's
    1x 3TB Hitachi 7200 HDD
    1x OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD
    2GB RAM

The SSD just has Win 7 installed on it. Win 7 flies, but that's because of the SSD. Each HDD is used for storing media. I also have a VNC client installed, a usenet client and a torrent client installed. This thing stays on 24/7 downloading, and I set downloads up from my phone etc.

Connected via Cat6 throughout the entire house, I get ~60-70 MB/s speeds copying from the micro server to my desktop.

In short, yes it's more than capable of running as a file server + torrent box. I had Freenas 7 running off a USB drive previously. It was fine, but it wasn't that quick and limited, plus I prefer Windows to Linux.

My advice is buy a small SSD just for the OS and the thing flies.

    • Michalek - I thought this thing only supported 4 hdds?

How do you run the 60gb SSD - have you hacked it in some way or have you added an extra SATA card?

      • Yeah it's a common misconception. Officially it supports 4 HDD's, but there's a 5th SATA port so you can also use an optical drive in the optical bay concurrently. Hence, instead of using a DVD drive, I've plugged my SSD in there instead. So that's 5 HDD's you could essentially have running.

There are things that I've read about using the eSATA port to plug in a 6th drive, but I don't know much about that at all. I guess it's possible, and I remember reading about a hacked bios being needed.

But yes, I can confirm that you can have 5 HDD's running at the same time if you want. You need to supply a Molex-Sata power converter I think from memory, as well as your own sata cable to get the 5th drive going.

erwinsie: Not running either but I guess it's closest to JBOD. No RAID whatsoever, just the disks installed. For my needs Win 7 was fine. I've got VNC so I can remotely access it whenever and from wherever. If your requirements are different then maybe Win home server is better for you, but for me, Win 7 is more than enough :)

NOTE: I think the 5th SATA port is SATA, not SATA II, hence limited @ 1.5 Gbit. But most if not all HDD's can't read or write quicker than ~150 MB/s anyway unless in RAID, so it's no problem :)

        • The modified firmware will convert the 5th/6th port to full speed 3 Gbit SATA II.

        • Thanks Michalek - much appreciated. Will be building mine tonight.

        • The modified firmware will convert the 5th/6th port from (emulated) UDMA 6 (theoretical max: 133MB/s) interface to SATA II (theoretical max: 375MB/s) interface. The actual throughput of the drive is a completely different story.
Benchmarks of WD Caviar Black is average 112 MB/s; so, the interface is not the limiting factor.

    • Mich, are you on RAID 5 or just JBOD? would win home server better with this? and do we need to have the O/S on separate disk?

    • hmmm, which OS should I install… I want to hook it up next to my TV so I can use as a media pc and file server etc.

  • I picked up the server today from these guys.
    Office needs cleaning lady… lol

    • Does anyone wants to trade n40l's stock ram? If anyone is upgrading and doesnt need stock ram? let me know

      • I got one, do you still want it?

  • well, apparently I will have a spare 2Gb stock RAM availble once Dessytek get around to shipping their N40L to me!!! For somethings sake (please forgive me for what i am about to say), I am finding that even MegaBuy can supply quicker and faster; plus give more up-to-date notification emails!!!

    Apologies, i digress… eventually I should have a spare stock 2Gb module…

    Phew!

EDIT: Fixed spelling mistake… got caught up in the moment…

  • Still waiting a week after ordering.
And now it's Easter, so I'm guessing it'll be a fair bit longer.. pretty disappointing given they stung $24 for delivery & claim 2-5 days.
My Easter project just changed.. :-((

Then again, there are better things to do over a long weekend than messing around trying to set up a server!! :-))
