      Honestly none seems to care about it the governments handling of it has been terrible. Deaths aren’t really marked as covid but complications of. Hospitals take resources by saying there swamped by covid patients but in reality they have none just to take funding off government.

      I would say cases are probably in there high 30-50k a day it’s just people don’t get tested because some places and areas charge obnoxious amounts

      And if you need reference one of the most populous cities in the world (Delhi) reported 34 cases of covid..the whole of NSW is above 150 and people here routinely wear masks and are double vaxxed

        We have it so good here in Australia that people think the rest of the news reporting around the world is some sort of big pharma conspiracy/government control by fear thing.

          Those muppets just need to look at cremation places. One place had a backlog of 9000 and was doing 200 burnings a day, roads had corpses of people ready to burn.

          India being a democracy is in name only the media is a puppet to modi. Same with its celebrities who parroted the whole protests that Sikh farmers were doing as anti national…same media refused to air these dead bodies piling up on streets

      Based on available data compiled (in this case by The Economist), there have been between 1.2-7.4m excess deaths in India during the CoVID-19 pandemic (this is regardless of what it is being attributed to). There is a large range due to the lack of credible data. As of end of Nov, the rate of excess deaths per 100,000 is 0.45 vs 0.02 in Australia. We have been less exposed and have better access to healthcare so not really fair to read too much of compare too deeply into those numbers. Hope that helps

      We just find the deals. The payments are with the OTAs. If it helps I've personally booked with mytrip twice and had no issues.

      I've used mytrip before no worries but with the whole current situation I'd probably prefer to make sure everything is safer. with the airline they wil refund you instantly, with these other cowboys…. you get what you pay for. The refund will happen, but you will spend hours and hours and hours to get it

        Be warned.. it's next to impossible to get money out of almost any travel agents. Many people have burnt their fingers in 2020 and their money is still stuck. I would rather pay a bit extra and deal directly with the airlines.

    Heck no. Last year I traveled overseas for a couple weeks to see my family and was stranded for 8 months. There were no flights back - and those Qantas repatriation flights were a joke - they arranged a few and made it sound like they had this massive repatriation effort going on. They really didn’t. And Australia kept changing its rules in a most finicky manner as well.

    I finally managed to get Business Class tickets but had to fly from India to USA to Australia, and of course pay $3,000 to be forced into a 5 star hotel (I would have been just fine in a 3 star hotel since we couldn’t leave our room anyway… but whatever!)

    If anyone wants my advice, and I know no one has asked, I’d say think thrice before traveling overseas with this new Omicron variant.

    No offence intended to Beat That Flight by the way.

      No offence taken, it's a tough time for travel! I personally know people needing to get back to India for family or personal reasons, and they'll consider the risk worth it. Definitely get travel insurance, though.

          They do exclude it, 100%. Forget any type of travel/medical insurance that they can link to the pandemic.
          If you get COVID over there, there will be NO special treatment. You'll fight it out in the virtually non-existent public system with the locals.
          It's a massive risk… so if you need to travel there it better be for an urgent reason, and not just a holiday to see family.

      I don't think the price changes for 3 vs 5 star hotels. The price afaik is fixed and you'll randomly get assigned a participating hotel.

      Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe it differs per state?

      Edit: I checked, what I described is correct for WA. $2.5k for one person $3.3k for two

        You are right there was no price change. What I said is that the only hotels used were 5 star hotels. And people got sent to any of them randomly.

        I don’t see how $3,000 could be justified for a single person because you can’t even leave the room. That’s essentially charging $200 a night for sleeping in a bed and using a toilet. And 3 meals (which weren’t always good). Most people did deliveries from Coles and UberEats etx.

        I’m not speaking from some entitled viewpoint - but you simply can’t justify that. It’s obvious there must’ve been a deal with the big hotels to keep their income flowing.

        I meant to say they SHOULD HAVE given people a choice of cheaper hotels because not everyone could afford $3,000 for a single person, $5,000 for a couple, and $500 per child.

          Again speaking from the perspective of Perth, we definitely have a number of hotels on offer. Some are 5 star, some are 3 and 4 star.

          Before the pandemic I traveled Australia a fair bit for work and we typically stayed at a 3ish star hotel or aparthotel like Quest. Typically was around $150-$180 per night.

          14 days in a hotel at $150 per night is $2100 plus $30 per day for food brings you to the $2.5k number. And if you got a 5 star hotel for that price, bargain! Lucky you!

            @cheesecactus: Sorry to disagree - we didn’t “get a 5 star hotel” for that price, because we couldn’t use any facilities (understandably!)

            And the food was not 5 star hotel food either - it was bulk prepared catered food by some outside company.

            Nothing about it was a bargain. If anything, it was a rip off. 🙂

    One more thing to be aware of: India is not one of the countries that has a VTL arrangement with Singapore. I quickly had a look at a couple of random flights from Delhi and saw that the wait in Singapore is over 15h. You won't be allowed to go to the usual transit area.     I'm flying to Delhi in April and chose to pay more and fly MEL-DEL direct with Qantas just so I don't have to deal with the hassle of transiting through another country.

    Just tried searching the fares on this website. Unfortunately, the website is very slow and the filters on the left side don’t change the results 🤔🙁!!
    I would prefer to use webjet email c websites and pay few dollars more. Rather wasting our time with such a poor website!!

    PCR test in Australia before departure - Approximately $80

    PCR test in India at Arrival - Approximately $85

    PCR test in India before departure on return -$15
    PCR test on return in Australia

    Plus uncertain Hotel / Institutional quarantine

    Wondering why these many test and precautions after someone is full vaccinated…

    There must be something big which is not highlighted yet to common people..

      Fully vaccinated doesn't mean you won't contract COVID at all. Tests done so that if you have it, you don't fly and spread. The vaccine is meant to allow your body to recover quicker.

        Not against Tests or vaccination but how many viruses we are able to eradicate completely in human race so far? Hardly few..

        We travelled daily locally in Sydney / Mlb teams and internationally and how many times we asked person sitting next to you has AIDS , STI or Cancer or any other diseases..

        Countries like India which are asking for PCR on arrival has 1,000 times more deaths on their roads daily then Covid.. so who is kidding whom?

        At some point things have to logical and not just orders drafted by officer who gained knowledge over news in 2 days ….

          While I understand your point of view, but all the diseases you have mentioned do not get transmitted the way COVID does. Slightly different modes of transmission and yes, we cannot avoid it forever but I am glad they are taking these steps rather than just letting everyone go by without anything.

          I am sure as vaccination rates across the globe go up, these tests will also subside. Flu is classic example of a similar disease (far less lethal but still responsible for countless deaths across the globe) which is managed but I am assuming life was not as normal when flu was first discovered.

    After what the travel industry put me through trying to secure credit / refunds in 2020, I'm reluctant to book anything… both in Australia and for overseas. Until the Australian government matches or exceeds the standard consumer protections for travel as they have in europe, I've completely lost interest in travel. Its a shame as I enjoyed travelling in both Australia and overseas, with often 5-7 trips per year. Now… No spending whatsoever.

      We have some of the most rigorous consumer protections in the world.

      Why should the Australian government foot the bill for a traveller that couldn’t be bothered reading the T&C’s of their booking?

    Transfers to and from India via Singapore are also not allowed until further notice due to regulatory requirements.

    anyone who travels to that part of the world should live with the consequences of not being allowed to come back IF a new variant spreads while they are there and AUS decides to close the border to protect the people inside. like it happened with delta..

    One of my friends recently booked his parent's one-way flight (departing early Dec) from DEL-MEL for ~120000 Qantas points. Not sure if it was a good deal or not. Just if someone looking for other options.
