  • Wondering when they will have the promotion for ExpresVpn

    • +18

I’d be avoiding Express VPN as they have been acquired by Kape Technologies. These are much better options IMO. Have a read of this: https://www.makeuseof.com/expressvpn-kape-technologies-affec…

      • People say similar stuff about Nord, PIA and cyberghost. At the end of the day it's really going to be up to each individual users case.

I want to watch Netflix and torrent stuff. For my use Nord and PIA have been great. If I wanted to attempt to hack the Kremlin, then maybe find something else.

        • Kape Technologies own PIA and Cyberghost too, hence why people say similar stuff about them.

        • Nord has been very frustrating for Netflix because Netflix are very proactive in detecting VPNs, same for Prime.

      • +1

Kape is a reason to avoid ExpressVpn, it's not the reason. https://gizmodo.com/you-should-probably-stop-using-expressvp… This part is purely anecdotal but after a removed it from my mac, a process remained active (I initially noticed it through constant DNS lookups to ExpressVpn API, then Activity Monitor). In then end I was able to manually find and remove the process. If you want something trustworthy, use Mullvad.

Express (in my research) has always been regarded very highly as one of the fastest and most stable VPNs. Additionally it's always been one of the most expensive.

While they do participate in cashback deals (and other misc promotions) I've never seen anything particularly competitive from them.

      Don't hold your breath.

      • Not sure how current your research is but prior to September ExpressVPN was highly regarded. It’s only since they were acquired by Kape Technologies that there is concern over the service.

  • Is this good for Netflix even when used from overseas?

    • +1

I use Nord on my Android phone and computer. Honestly it's not the best experience but it let's me watch shows available in other countries. The main issue I have is actually connecting to netflix when the VPN is on, I have to reconnect to different servers in the country and get lucky, as some are blocked and just plain won't work. Although the few that do work work well. It's not an elegant solution but the next best thing (maybe even better) is pirating.

    • +4

Netflix have been blocking VPNs lately so it's a bit hit and miss.

    • Nord works great for me , no issues hd stream

      • Which regions? I've been having issues with Nord lately.

        • I only use Japan. Have to do the whole reconnect thing everytime, sometimes the 3rd server is good, sometimes it takes 10 minutes (not exaggerating).

          • @Opal21212121: Yeah makes sense. Is it the same server #s that seem to work every time?

    • +1

It works pretty well but Netflix has been blocking VPNs more actively sometimes have to jump servers.

    • +2

      I can't netflix on nord.

    • Thanks all

  • +1

Netflix doesn't work for me on Surfshark 90% of the time on Android devices

    • It'll work if you override the GPS ….

      • How do you do that?

        • +1

Settings —> Advanced —> Override GPS Location

It might prompt you to enable developer mode and other insturctions would follow that… Then you are good to go ….

Your GPS location would move according to the server you choose. …

      • Been using that, still does not work. Tried the default Surfshark mock location and other mock location apps no luck. It used to work about 4months back. Not anymore

        • Then contact them.

It works fine for me and even on their site they say it works for Netflix on Android so something might be wrong on your end not theirs.

          • +1

@Freezies: Yeah checked with them, UK , Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan Netflix has issues. Which are the countries I want to watch for their library. USA works fine.

  • with regards to NordVPN. I let my 3yr membership expire a few months ago. Would I be classed as a "new" customer if I signed up a for a new plan again?

    • Usually you can make a new account with same details although I can't speak for this specifically.

    • Use a new email

  • I just noticed these are prices in USD

    • Paid $108.23 for a 2-year plan
      Cashback tracked $103.00

      • How long did it take for Cashback to track? Also, did you purchase within the Cashrewards mobile application? Mine wanted me to download the NordVPN app to complete order, however also said if I leave Cashrewards it won’t be tracked?

        • Less than 2hrs.
          And yes, via Cashrewards app.

      • I purchased on Friday and cashback still not tracked.

      • +1

        How did you pay $108.23?

        Mine showed up as $119

        • Select any country other than Australia when you place the order.

          • @mrhorse: Argh forgot to do this and paid $119.

Im so tempted to do a refund and re-do it for that $10 difference…

            • @kgree92: 96% Cashback anyways on that $10 gives you a saving of like 40 cents?

              • @miinht: Choosing AU made $10 more expensive for me. And since the cashback is fixed at $103

Morning, complete novice here and I wonder if you can help. Would this enable me to buy my son one of those Ultimate Games Pass on his Xbox for a cheaper price? He had it for 2 years with a Bargain I found on here but now the Bargains seem to say VPN required and I'm completely in the dark about it…..

    • +2

Yes. If you do it on Xbox you may need to set up VPN on your router though. If it's on PC it's easy.

      • +1

        THANK YOU!

    • +3

You can use the Windscribe vpn extension for free if you're using it for that, check out this for more info.

      • +1

Ooh thank you, I'll have a read :)

  • Are these VPNs owned by that dodgy company that someone posted about recently?

    • -3

NordVPN is one of the best and most secure VPN providers.

      • -1

        No it isn't.

        • evidence?

          • -1

@TheSnyper: Evidence that it's one of the most secure?

            • -1

@askbargain: No, evidence that it isn't. Apart from a data breach years ago which revealed no personal information, and systems have been changed since then, I can't find a single negative report about NordVPN security.

          • -1

@TheSnyper: https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/21/20925065/nordvpn-server-… ……. edit: ah so you did hear about it but you just want to ignore it.
I'm sure they're probably about as secure as the rest of these.

Surfshark recently removed andy ngo as a sponsor partner or something which is just weird behaviour.

            • +5

@musicinbed69: So that will be the thing from "years ago" that I mentioned. Also, from the page you linked …

"did not contain activity logs, usernames, or passwords. But the attacker would have been able to see what websites users were visiting during that time, a company advisor said, although the content of the websites likely would have been hidden due to encryption."

              … and …

"Potential attackers could have gotten only into that server and only intercept the traffic and seen what websites people are browsing — not the content, only the website — for a limited period of time, only in that isolated region"

              So my comment is accurate.

              • @TheSnyper: NordVPN is NOT one of the most secure VPN.

They are the most promoted VPN because they pay out 100% commissions

If you want secure, compare Nord to iVPN, Mullvad, oVPN

As stated above they were hacked and tried to cover it up.

If a VPN is secure then getting hacked should be very hard.

I know which one I would choose.

  • Just wondering what the definition of new customer is? If I bought someone else a subscription to Nord VPN with the same Cashrewards account that I used for my own a couple years ago, would that be flagged as a repeat customer (the Nord account would be with a different email address).

    • +1

      TA'sexpert advice is required … !
Someone tag him here … :D

      • +9

        I'm here :)

A new customer is as defined by NordVPN, Surfshark, and any other VPN provider. Nothing to do with Cashrewards at all. Simply use a new email address at their end, the same Cashrewards account as always, and you're good to go. Please remember to click 'Shop Now' or 'Shop Offer' and buy. Don't go clicking to other sites and certainly don't use any 3rd party plugins etc. Best bet is to use the Cashrewards mobile app on 4G/5G as this also eliminates any potential issues with WiFi/router firewalls and the like. Tracking for both NordVPN & Surfshark typically takes 1-4 hours. And remember you have the safety of their money back guarantee. All the best, and have a great weekend!

        • Sweet … The doubts are cleared now … :)

        • Thanks for clarifying, I had the same question

        • I placed the order at 12.05pm and cashback tracked at 12.55pm .. Checked my credit card app and I was charged $108 - the tracked cashback indicated $103 so about $5 net. When setting up an account I used USA California (sorry taxman) as a location to bring the GST to zero. Used my phone (iOS) CashRewards app to ensure CB tracks. Easy peasy.

        • Should the purchase show up in my cashrewards account directly after making the purchase? Or do I need to wait for a while
It shows up in my click history, but not in my rewards under transactions yet.

Does this stack with nordvpns Black Friday deal?

  • +1

Can anyone recommend an independent website that reviews and analyses the privacy of VPN services?

    • The formatting of this site looks generic and a bit suss, and they get referral commissions when you buy through them, and I'm not expert on VPNs, but the info looks reasonably sound.

      https://thebestvpn.com/

Generally tho, been reading articles about how although VPNs help you spoof geolocation, they aren't that much help for security/privacy. It's just replacing who gets to sniff all your traffic from the ISP to the VPN operator, and if that VPN is dodgy….

      • That’s what I want to know. Who is dodgy and who is not. Who doesn’t keep logs. Who won’t hand information over to the FBI.

        • +1

If you want to avoid the FBI you want to avoid a VPN that's based in the US. And you'd probably want one based in a jurisdiction that isn't involved in any of the 'eyes' arrangements. https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/understanding-five-eyes-conce…

And you'd probably want a VPN based in switzerland or similar country. And they are unlikely to pay rebates to any rewards sites.

          https://protonvpn.com/pricing

          • +1

            @huggsymersh: Don't forget the 14 eyes.

          • @huggsymersh: That's the beauty of a VPN though, it shouldn't matter if they are based in the US or not as long as they are complying with a no logging policy. They'll simply have nothing to hand over to the FBI that would be of any use.

The only possible case would be if they let the FBI take over their operations to start tracking someone in particular, however you'd be doing some serious shit for that to be the case.

      • Actually, i honestly don't know if the link I suggested above is a referral link farm. Here's another myth busting perspective, and cos he's not directly trying to sell you something (aside from ads on the page) slightly more trustworthy.

        https://www.howtogeek.com/753661/vpn-myths-debunked-what-vpn…

I use surfshark btw, after a cashrewards 95% rebate made the cost negligible.

There used to be a list maintained by a guy in Reddit called That One Privacy Guy https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L72gHJ5bTq0Djljz0P-N….

Not sure how up to date it is, but it does do a comparison of a lot more of the privacy features.

      • Thanks, hasn't been updated since 2019 but a good place to start.

PrivacyTools.io do a good job of reviewing multiple services from web hosts, email providers, browsers, and VPN providers amongst others. They seem to have a decent thorough approach and explain why they do/don't recommend a particular service.

Edit: I was wondering why the PrivacyTools website was looking different recently. It seems owner has gone AWOL so rest of team has moved over to PrivacyGuides This new site provides all the justifications and info that the original site did. Same team behind PrivacyTools.io

    • Here's anorther resource which independently compares VPN providers https://techlore.tech/vpnchart.html

  • How long after purchasing does it take for the Cashback to be tracked?

    • Purchased on Friday and still not tracked. I had a failed payment on that account in the past. Maybe that's the reason not get tracked.

      • Hi. Please see here re tracking and tips. If you've not received confirmation from your purchase on Friday, I'd strongly suggest using their money back guarantee rather than lodging a cashback claim, they re-buy per my comment. Enjoy the weekend :)

        • Thanks TA, fully agree with you and I will do the same.

    • my Surfshark tracking confirmation took 1 hour
