Macbook Air M1 Cheapest Method to purchase

Hey guys,

Looking to purchase a MacBook air M1 for uni, I've heard people discussing discounted apple gift cards or other gift cards that can be used to buy a MacBook for a cheaper price.

What's the best method right now to purchase the MacBook air m1 at the lowest price (only need the cheapest configuration). Also, is it the best time to buy now, that being black Friday and Cyber Monday, Christmas time or back to school?

Please let me know, any ideas are appreciated.

Whats the the difference between normal edu store vs aoc edu store?
How do you get to aoc store?
I went to apple education website from google and it brought me to a different apple education store with more expensive prices.

    • How do we use apple gift cards on online purchase on edu store? Is it possible to use multiple gift cards for one purchase? I have never used it before.

      Thank you so much.

Here is the link to the AOC store

How do we use apple gift cards on online purchase on edu store?

The same way as the regular store

Is it possible to use multiple gift cards for one purchase?

Yes. Here’s some info from an older post:

        • You can redeem up to 8 gift cards (in conjunction with an Apple Account Balance and/or a credit/debit card) online or over the phone at Apple.

        • You can redeem up to 8 gift cards (in conjunction with a credit/debit card) in-person at an Apple Store.

        • You cannot redeem an Apple Account Balance in-person at an Apple Store.

        • You can load multiple Apple gift cards to an Apple Account Balance, but the maximum balance is $4999.

        • Apple gift cards have no expiry date.

        Hope that helps

        • Thank you so much for the help,
Sorry, I'm really new to this,
So, I can load gift cards to my Apple ID then, use it to buy at Apple online website?

What's the difference between AOC and education? usually people recommend education but, I have never seen AOC.

          Thank you so much

            Sure can!

What's the difference between AOC and education?

Nothing really other than the prices being slightly different. The education store is designed for students, the AOC is the portal designed for Australian Education Union members. I bought my current MBP via the AOC store no problems.

    • any chance we can use the cashrewards 8.5% on this?

    Gumtree? Ebay?…

    • And Facebook marketplace.

Currently selling for about $1,100, but I've seen between $1,000 and $1,200 for a MBA M1.

      • Sheesh… prices have really tumbled post M1 Pro/Max. I sold my month old MBA on Gumtree for $1250 not that long ago

thats what happens when the apple falls from the tree…

        • Well, retail, it's $1500.

          Sale price is always $1350.
          Officeworks price beat is $1282.
          Edu price is still $1298.

Not sure why someone thought saving $32-$50 was a good deal, but you did well!

  • You have two options:

    Option a:

    1. Get the 15% off gift card at coles, these gift cards sold quickly, you can only get 5 because of the T&C.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664735

    2. OW is selling for $1344, go to TGG or JB asking for a price match, then you actually paying $1142.4

Option B: slightly higher than option A.

    1. Get 10% off gift card at Woolworth(You might get some reward points for your debit card or credit card).
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/665508

    2. Apple AOC price, $1294 * 0.9, then you literally paying 1164.6.

    • Can you buy from AOC without being a student or a member of the Aus Edu union ?
      Thank you

  • This says it expires on the 29th.

Would that be midnight tonight the 28th or midnight on the 29th?

  • Upon checkout, I saw this. What if you already have $2000 AUD in your ITunes though?

“You can use up to 8 Apple Gift Cards. Apple Store Gift Cards can't be used with Apple Pay.“

    • Not sure what the question is here? You can use your iTunes balance to pay for purchases from Apple. That disclaimer is saying that the Apple credit balance is not a source of funds for Apple Pay (e.g. you can't use your Apple credit to pay for food from Coles).

  • StudentEdge store pricing is a little bit better than regular Apple education pricing. Not sure how it compares to AOC.

I just got an M1 MacBook Pro and using the student edge store saved an extra $70. The site doesn’t mention anywhere that you have to be a student and they don’t check in any way.

A couple of other ways you may be able to save:

    • churn a credit card for the rewards when buying your gift cards. This got me an extra $650 in cash back on the card but my computer alone met the minimum spend. You’d need to put other purchases on it too if buying an Air.

    • Salary sacrifice it if you can. Depending on the provider, you may be able to buy it yourself, show proof of purchase, then receive the funds sacrificed from your pay from pre-tax dollars. Just means you don’t have to wait until tax return time. Saved me $1236

All these put together meant I got a $3749 device for effectively $1069. I’m very tempted to sell it in a year for a profit and do it all again.

  • If you can afford to wait a month to 6 weeks, there's usually an Apple Back to School promotion for Uni students where you can get about $200 of free extras, eg. Airports or similar.

For a MacBook air, that adds more than 10% of value, if you want the extras.

  • Tried price matching both JB HiFi and Officeworks and both wanted me to prove I was a uni student before price matching :(

    • They won't normally match the student pricing deals.
