Best FAN for Summer Time?

We tried using our aircon last summer and it costs us an arm and a leg (3-phase house with ducted reverse cycle aircon)
So we are looking for some fans for each rooms so we can survive through the summer.

What are some of the recommended fans from the OzB community?

Some considerations:
- Used during day time as well as during sleep, overnight
- Quiet is preferred
- Obviously posting in OzB means I want fans that go on a good sale, frequently?

Some odd considerations:
- During nighttime, the temperature falls but there might not be any wind. Any way to use fans to suck in/out air from the house? (Just like CPU case fans… LOL)

Pedestal or ceiling fans? DC ceiling fans are generally much quieter than anything else is my experience.

    • Pedestal/floor fans I'm looking for :)
We do have one ceiling fan in one of the room though so don't have to worry much in that room.

We have the Xiaomi DC Pedestal Fan, it’s super quiet and nice and breezy at night. Can customise the rotation amount and there’s a breeze mode where it varies the speed.

  • I have a Dyson Hot+Cool and freaking love it.. but i bought one for my parents, and they think its too loud and instead use a $30 Kmart one!

    • I have a Dyson Cool Tower and that is the only fan I have in the whole house.
Initially I liked it because it was new to me (bladeless etc) but I found that:
      - It was quite noisy at mid-high fan level
      - Can't point up if you have higher ground/bunk bed
      - Wind not as strong as the conventional fan

But I do love about the filter! Say if you have a controlled/uncontrolled bushfire near your house, you just lock yourself in a room and turn that on. It clears it :)

  • I bought the Breville Air circulator, best step up i ever made.
    Super quiet and efficient.

  • was this the first year you have used the ducted aircon?

    • We are in a rental so it changes time to time.
We did live in another reverse cycle ducted house but the elec bill wasn't as high as this house we are currently living.

I asked the electrician why whis might be and they said it's because it's a 3-phase house and they tend to take more power??
Not sure if that made sense because an appliance will take certain amount of Watts to run and it shouldn't matter if it's 2 phased or 3 phased?

  • What were your settings on the a/c? Auto? What temperature? Left on 24/7 or only when necessary?

    • It's usually set at 19c for cooling, and it is set to Auto.
We only put on in the evening when everybody is at home and suffering :)

Our electric meter LED blinks at superspeed when we turn on the aircon. Not sure if there is a fault with wiring or something.

      • Auto should be 23 degrees for best balance of economy and comfort

      • That's way too cold!! 19 degrees for me is almost too cold for winter heating so why have it so cold in Summer.

My advice is 23-24 degrees for summer cooling. Each degree cooler you make it, the energy use increases by 10% or something.

In winter, heating should be 18-21 degrees.

I always find it amusing that in winter some people crank the heating to 24-25 degrees, but in summer want it colder at 19??

Using an A/C at sensible temperatures doesn't mean exorbitant bills - help the A/C out by closing curtains to shield sun shining in, close windows and doors before the heat of the day.

  • My old traditional pedestal fan broke yesterday and leading into summer I need a new one.

I want to try a DC fan as they have more speed options and are quieter.

Which is the good one to get? I've seen this one:
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-premium-dc-motor-pedestal…

but many people say this one wasn't as good as the previous model?

Should I get that one above or the Xiamoi?
