Azul is only $30.81 from Amazon US which is a fantastic price. One of my favourite games alongside TTR and Catan to introduce to friends.

    • +2

Says Amazon US but then seller came up as not being amazon itself and comments/reviews on there about fakes… so I decided to not grab it.

      • Co-mingling of SKUs. Worse if its a fake shipped internationally to deal with. Only had one, and that was a suspect exploding kittens game from AU I sent back for replacement.

        • dammit I just bought that off Amazon AU for an xmas pressie

        • +2

Well when you add to your cart and go thru to checkout it changes to some other company trading name.. just a little dodgy to me? I ended up getting it from the AU store at least for easy returns for a little bit more.

    • +1

Thats awesome, worthy of a post in itself.

    • any good process to buy Amazon US from AU account? website keeps sending me back to AU

  • Any good deals on boardgames for more non casual players?

I found decent deals on Arkham Horror and Root.

    • +1

A few highly rated with a decent complexity rating:

      Scythe - $112 (RRP $140)

      Root - $61.56 (RRP $99)

Wingspan is also apparently great for a game that has some level of complexity. Currently OOS but might be restocked if you are lucky.

If anyone is looking at games by Stone Maier, look at buying them direct from their Australian store. If you signup as a SM Champion for $20 (annual fee) this will give you 20 to 25% discount on all products including shipping.

        Discounted price example:
        Wingspan $60
        Scythe $81.75
        Red Rising $67.50

        • that deal is ending at the end of the year - the discount is going to be reduced.

          • @Elijha: Oh really :( definitely the end of the year?

            • +2

@Clivey In Space: Found the notice, actually not going down as much as I recalled. Emailed to members in July.

              Important Change for 2022

I’m going to start with the important, actionable information, then explain the reasoning for the change: On January 1, 2022, we will change the 25% Champion discount on the Stonemaier Games webstore to 20%. If you no longer want to remain a Champion as a result, please contact Joe ([email protected]) with your Champion e-mail address anytime in July or August and you will receive a full refund for your previous Champion payment (this doesn't apply to those whose memberships will renew/end automatically in 2021, as there's no change in 2021).
              ….

      • +1

Damn you, I've been eyeing off Root for a long time. Really don't need anymore board games but you got me.

    • +2

The Crew, 7 Wonders Duel, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Root, Spirit Island, Nemesis, Barrage.

    • Spirit island is an excellent price (but not the expansions). 7 wonders duel is also great.

Spirit island hasn't been on discount for ages (presumably pandemic lockdowns encourage coop).

Otherwise most of it is on the lighter side.

  • Finally got TTR. Thanks.

  • +29

Grabbed mousetrap for ~$13 or so yesterday. Finally feel like a rich family from my childhood

    • Yes, my 5 year old wanted it from kmart a few weeks ago, so happy I didn't buy it then (was like $30).

    • Sorry but what do you mean? Was this game not accessible to anyone in the past?

      • +1

Haha I have this feeling about Mouse Trap too! I never owned it, my parents were too stingy to buy it, but my friends owned it. Growing up as a povvo kid in the 90s…

Might want to check Kmart for price comparison. Catan has been $49 for awhile

    • +3

Kmart has been stocking some quality games recently. Including Smart Games series.

  • +6

Upvote if only to say thanks for a single thread. 👍

Unstable Unicorns comes up at Kmart every so often for $20.

  • Thanks, bought some

  • Is Risk any good? Contemplating purchasing the 60th-anniversary one here:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Risk-60th-Anniversary-Strategic-Co…

    • +4

Depends whether you're playing it with a very competitive brother who always wins - if not then I'd say go for it.

      • +1

sounds like a story worthy of some therapy!!

    • +9

From what I've read from board game enthusiasts - Risk is a bit archaic due to it's style of player elimination. Players can be knocked out fairly early and the game can drag on for a LONG time, leaving the knocked out players with nothing to do. Many board games have since improved on this weakness and there are supposedly better alternatives out there.

      • +7

Are you sure you aren't just… risk averse?

        • +1

          You are out of touch

        • +1

          Outstanding…

          [slow clap]

    • Yes, but i recommend downloading the a dice rolling app to speed things up. On android there's a specific risk app.

    • +1

Risk is decent considering it is 60+ years old, but modern games just tend to be a lot better. Risk has some pretty huge design flaws that you don't see as much in newer games, e.g. players being eliminated early, having the game drag on forever, and massive unfair dicerolls determining the outcome.

If you were just interested in this type of dudes-on-a-map genre I would look into games like Kemet, Inis, or Cyclades. These tend to be a bit more complicated than Risk though, so if you were after something of a similar complexity to that then I'd probably just suggest a different genre altogether.

      • We played diplomacy back in the day, from memory it fixed some of the dice roll stuff but games could still drag on for ages

      • The use of the Secret Mission cards help to address the game dragging on forever.

The rules have been updated many times over the years, and apparently differed according to the country the game was released in.

It can still be a fun game.

    • Risk is great IMHO, but can lead to the murder of other players.

  • +1

Great post, nabbed a couple of bargains for presents. Wish I'd waited as had already got a couple of games full price already,

Of all these, I'd say Codenames is the best option. Not necessarily the best savings, but it is a sensational game, virtually unlimited replayability, and can easily be done as a serious thing or a pretty casual light game.

EDIT: I've just taken more of a like and I'd also rate Hanabi for $12.50 and Pandemic Legacy Season 1 for $80.

    • +2

To be fair it depends entirely on your preference and the number of people you play with, and the frequency which you play.

Personally I’ve had a ton more use out of catan than code names.

      • Yes absolutely, YMMV! I'm a bit over Catan but it does offer alot

    • It doesn't look to be included in this deal but if you like Codenames and haven't played Decrypto I'd thoroughly recommend it. I'd played a fair bit of Codenames with family and friends but then we picked up Decrypto and haven't really gone back to Codenames since. Both great games though!

  • Cheers bought monopoly deal for a gift

  • Some of the RRP is so overstated

Monopoly Deal - $5 at Kmart
Mouse Trap - $25 at Kmart

I did buy Battleship electronic and Azul

I can get the pandemic for free if I wanted to

    • +1

      how?

      • +20

They mean COVID-19, not the game.

This joke explanation was a community service announcement by GrueHunter

Century is also good, $40 atm. The other variants (look like expansions, but not?) also look fun, but havent tried em. Would recommend the Golem edition for pretty translucent gems instead of wooden cubes.

  • Do you guys recommend getting plastic sleeves for cards? If so, any good ones to rec?

    • +3

I sleeve all my games, which adds up to quite a lot of cost. I buy Make Them Last (MTL) sleeves (they have their own website, or can order from their ebay store - the dude is friendly and can combine the shipping costs) as they are well priced and have all the sizes, though the quality is def not as good as Ultrapro, Ultimate guard etc. Comes in two thicknesses, thin and thick.
For games that need a lot of shuffling, I would use Ultrapro etc because it shuffles 10x easier, but if I just need to protect them from spills and grotty fingers i'll put them in MTL.

Also I use this compilation for all my sleeving needs

    • +2

I just purchased 8 packs of these in thick and regular to sleeve Gloomhaven: Jaws and Smash up. When I pick them up from the post Office I'll let you know.

      Good price for Penny Sleeves.

Depends on the game for me, if it's expensive and involves a lot of shuffling then I will.
I've only used Mayday Premium which are about $4-$6 for 50 so it can add up quick if a game has a lot of cards.

      • +1 to sleeving games that need a lot of shuffling. I like Sleeve Kings ones as they aren't super thick and don't stick together but also come in packs of 110. Just keep in mind lots of games don't have inserts that hold sleeved cards.

        • Ugg tell me about it, I sleeved my Munchkin and had to rubber band the box.

I really appricste Smash up with their aftermarket boxes

  • +12

Always wanted Mousetrap as a kid… for $13 screw it, will set it up once, do the thing and die a happy man.

  • Cheers, bought Pandemic

  • +1

    Cheers, bought a Monopoly Classic

  • Wingspan and 7 Wonders New Edition are both $49 on Kmart Black Friday deals.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP, mousetrap sold out :,(

  • Looks like Jack has arrived for most of these games. Still in stock but price has gone up significantly

  • I'm not seeing the pricing listed in the post :( all games seem to be quite a bit more expensive.

Is there something I have to do in order to see the reduced prices?

    • The prices went up approximately 10 minutes after the 10% cashback started, I assume only a limited number at the reduced price (not that I could see that specified anywhere)

  • Risk never fails.

    Thanks OP!

  • +1

Battleship coming up at $30.95 for me

  • Scattergories $25 now :(

  • Catan is $39.20 Delivered here for anyone following.
