Desktop PC Boot Error: Beeps 9 Times

So my son was playing computer. And all of a sudden the fans made a really loud sound and the monitors turned off. I reset the PC, the motherboard made 9 loud beeps and just sat idle. No picture on monitors. So I took Pc apart and found one of the yellow power wires that goes into the 4 pin connector is melted away. So I’m guessing the correct amount of power isn’t going into the video card.

I can simply get a new power supply and just replace the current one ? Can I do something else like find another power source if I take it from the SSD’s I have connected ?

Can I just get any power supply ? Or do specific ones only fit dependant on my case ?

I haven’t built a PC since the Pentium 3 came out

  • Wow, Molex to PCIe cables for a GPU? No wonder it went kaput, they're not designed for high power loads. Whoever did that is an idiot.

Guessing it's not a modular PSU so you'll want to replace it and hope it hasn't fried the GPU.

    • Techfast 😶
      I’ve added pic of psu

      https://ibb.co/GJB1QKs

      • Wow indeed. Still under warranty to claim from them?

Can you take a pic of the PSU's ports to see if you can try replacement PCIe cable in first instance.

        • I bought this exactly 2 years ago. Didn’t upgrade warranty to any extra years

I’m guessing I need to take the case apart to take those photos ?

I’m not very savvy when it comes the PsU’s.

I’m ok at putting all the computer hardware parts in and what not

@Danstar: Just wanted to see if you can replace cables in the first instance before buying a full new PSU.

If it's modular (doubt it), it will have ports that you can simply replace cables with like this one:

            https://linustechtips.com/uploads/monthly_2020_11/631721325_…

If it's not modular then there'll be a spaghetti mess of installed cables that you cannot replace (and likely why they used molex to pcie adapters) like this one:

            https://techguided.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Non-Modula…

You can also get semi-modular PSUs that has both fixed cables as well as open ports like this one:

            https://www.pcinside.info/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/power-s…

            • @Hybroid: It’s a spaghetti mess one lol

              https://ibb.co/M5CVCKF

              • @Danstar: Ah yes, I would recommend replacing the PSU then. It's a cheap generic one anyway. Any computer parts store nearby to pick one up now?

Check what GPU & CPU you have but I reckon 750w should be perfectly fine.

                • @Hybroid: I have a 1660 super and AMD Ryzen 5 3500X

                  • @Danstar: Oh then 750w is overkill. A 500w or 600w will be more than sufficient.

Make sure to get a modular one and NO molex! Not for anything, not even low power SATA drives. We moved away from that 10 years ago.

                    • @Hybroid: I’m happy to go overkill in case of future upgrades

                      • @Danstar: That EVGA one will do you nicely then and give you headroom for future upgrades. Yes it comes with a pack of all cables you will need too. Good luck!

                    • @Hybroid: I have an m-atx case though. Would that psu fit in the case ?

                      Thermaltake Versa H18 M-ATX Case

                      • @Danstar: Case specs tab says standard PS2 PSU (i.e. ATX-size PSU*) so yes it should: https://www.thermaltake.com.au/versa-h18.html

ATX standard size is 150mm W x 86mm H x 140mm D but from the PSU specs on BPC's website it's 150mm D. So there's 10 mm extra length but from your pic here https://ibb.co/M5CVCKF you don't have any issues with extra length so should be all good.

*ATX is technically the sizing for motherboards but colloquially used for other components too.

                    • @Hybroid: OP's PSU has two rails of 16 A for +12 V = 32 A, even my SFX 450 W PSU has 37.5 A on +12 V
I am not sure that can supply 700 W :D

                • @Hybroid: There is, but I’m happy to wait to get a decent one at a good price

                  Such as this one?

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661170

          • +1

@Danstar: Generally speaking if a power supply is generic (that is, doesn't have a well known brand) it's best to replace as soon as possible it if it's ever going to be used in a gaming system. They aren't built to a high standard and they use whatever parts are available to achieve a low price, even in PSU's of the same model they can be using a variable bill of materials and they don't spend a lot of time testing or validating them.

If unlucky you get one that dies just outside of the warranty period…

            • @scrimshaw: Sorry to be annoying guys. But with the bpc tech one, delivery could be up to a week.
Browsed Amazon and found this one which can be delivered by tomorrow.

Is this one any good/ will fit? (I assume it will fit as measurements look right)

@Danstar: That MSI one will do fine.

                • @Hybroid: Sweet. Thanks heaps

                  • @Danstar: I paid that for my 850? :/

                    • @Slippery Fish: Yeah. I know it’s not best deal but I want a psu sooner rather than later

I’ve contacted bpc, asked them about same day delivery

          • +1

@Danstar: Hey mate, I have read the thread and know you have already bought a replacement (and Hybroid's advice has been perfect), but I just want to jump in and point out that warranties are not immutable, fixed periods in Australia.

The statutory minimum for all merchantable goods (things of quality and ability to be legally able to be sold) is 12 months, but each individual product has a warranty that covers it for a reasonable amount of time based on the quality and cost of the item. This includes the build of the PC, which must be of merchantable service.

Using an incorrect cable (the molex) adapter for the load constitutes a non-merchantable service, and you would be well within your rights to claim this as a fault within warranty.

Will companies like Techfast try and weasel out of responsibility by outright lying to you, making the appeal process impossibly difficult, and wear you down through bullying and attrition? Absolutely! But if you have the stomach for it, you should absolutely give it a shot and threaten them with the ombudsman.

I used to work for one of these types of companies, and the bullshit we used to do to our customers was unforgivable. Consider this one tiny little act of penance that I will never fully repay :(

@ageotas: Update. Luke from techfast messaged me back after I messaged him; and offered to send a replacement (gigabyte) PSU

      • Techfast, not surprised.

        • I’m partly to blame too. I should’ve upgraded the PSU before or straight after purchase.

    • Those are 22 AWG wires, aren't they?

      • Not a clue without seeing the marking on them, they could range from 16/18 to 24.

        • I've only seen 22s and 24s. Never 16 or 18s, what are they used for?

  • +1

Replace that thing before it goes and takes the rest of your PC with it.

  • Will this one be ok to replace it with?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661170

    • +1

      Yes

      • Silly question. But does that come with the actual power cabling to plug into the Mobo, cos, gfx card etc. ?

        • Yes. It is a fully modular power supply and will come with more cables than you actually need to hook all your hardware up.

  • Is this by any chance built by Techfast ?

    • Yes 😅

      • +2

        Is it still under warranty?

        Sorry, already discussed above……

        • +1

No. Only had the 1 year, it’s been 2 years since purchase

          • @Danstar: Just replace the power supply as per suggestions above.

            Easy to do…

            • @deme: Lol.

I’m not usually the type to do those things. Heck even my Kmart steam mop carked it after a few months and I’m just gonna buy a new one (from Kmart again lol)

Ps. I did message like from techfast at same time I made this thread. See what he comes back with

  • A melted cable probably means a short circuit, consideration how terrible the power supply is i very much doubt replacing it will fix the problem, it probably took out other parts as well when the psu died.

    • The pc still booted up. So it looks like it only affected the GFX card. Hopefully that still works

      • +1

I think you are confusing what booting up means, if you are getting 9 beeps that means it didn't even post let alone boot.

Just because it has power doesn't really mean anything, a short can cause a world of hurt, many parts could be dead. It can affect pretty much every part in the system, unless the power supply has very good protection against this kind of thing, and seeing as how the power supply looks like the cheapest one i have ever seen, i very much doubt it would protect your other system components from a short circuit.

        • We’ll find out when I get a new PsU

  • 9 beeps
    Indicates

9 Beeps - ROM BIOS Checksum Failure
    Replace ROM BIOS, troubleshoot motherboard.

Could this mean that the ROM is dead and needs to be replaced ? Or can I reset the bios on the mobo by pulling out one of those plastic pieces on the board somewhere ?

    • +1

what is the motherboard ? some got 2 chips for backup incase of failure. Now most of the BIOS EEPROMs are soldered and you need to solder a new chip and program it with an external programmer. If it is a cheap motherboard, it could be easy and cheaper to replace the motherboard it self.
If you have a Ryzen CPU with AM4 slot, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663158 is a very good motherboard. Please change the PSU for the sake of new motherboard. I think PSU crapped out when GPU loaded and there was a power surge and stuffed the BIOS firmware.

      Guide : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp5kPobFCLg

BTW, number of beeps and error code depends on the motherboard, check specific error code for your motherboard.
I think you can test it with a POST error code check card as well

      • B350M M-ATX Motherboard × 1 Is what it says I upgraded to on the invoice.
the motherboard box supplied says biostar b45m2

        • does it look like https://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=9… ?

First change the PSU and check, if still not working, get a good motherboard like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663158 (if you have a friend or shop nearby, give it a try to flash BIOS too before getting a new motherboard)

          • @bazingaa: Yes that’s the one

            POST BIOS Beep Codes
            Number of Beeps

            Description
            1 beep Success booting.
8 beeps Display memory error (system video adapter)

Maybe it was 8 beeps and it is just the video card getting no power

            • @Danstar: could be, I vaugly remember that some GPUs will display a message as "PCIe power not connected" if it only get power through motherboard. I am not 100 % sure about this. Anyway first check with a new PSU. Get a good one, I have a small SFX 450 W which runs a 5600x + RTX3060 :D

              • +1

@bazingaa: Either gonna get the msi one from Amazon or EVGA SuperNOVA GA Series 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular Power Supply from
Bpc if they can deliver same day

  • Have you checked your motherboard after the crash. It might be the conductors had enough. Not just the ps could deal this.

    • I’ll have to wait and see when I install the new PSU

  • +2

Success! New PSU installed and everything is working like normal. Had to reset BiOS which was easily done

    Another thing;

When the windows logon screen appears, the video card fans start running faster than I've ever heard them run before.
I don’t know if this is a bios setting as I loaded “optimised settings” and it’s changed some settings to increase the fan speeds on the card or the new psu is giving it more power when needed to be able to increase fan speeds?

    Update:

It seemed like 1 fan wasn't spinning. As soon as I touched it, the fan which was spinning stopped….and all seems to be ok now. Both fans are spinning and normal speeds/volume

    • +1

Great news! Glad the GPU wasn't fried. Happy gaming!

      • Thanks for al the replies.

That was the first time I’ve ever installed a PSU / used a modular PSU. I used to buy the case with psu in them back in the day. Now that I’ve done it; I’m gonna slowly buy parts as they come up cheap and build a Pc with the kids!

I was gonna ask questions about the psu as the plugs were a bit different to the molex psu I had previously. Especially the 3+1 pins, at first I thought I don’t have the right plugs lol
