When you sign into your Quest 2 with the same Facebook account you will receive the $50 credit which can be used to purchase games and apps on the Oculus store.

You will need to remain friends with the refer on Facebook for ~90 so that you both receive the credit. The referral bonus is eligible for all new headsets regardless of where you purchased them if you activate the offer before signing into the headset for the first time.

You can message anybody listing in the Oculus referral system to start the process.

They really want to get rid of them

    • +45

I don't think it's about getting rid of them. They've always sold them at a loss. It's about trying to convince people to become part of Zuckerberg's creepy ecosystem.

      • +12

Didn't they remove the requirement of a facebook account to use oculus now?

        • +6

I think that starts early next year.

        • +64

Yeah, they're gonna replace the facebook account requirement with a Meta account requirement.

      • +2

It worked with a friend of mine and he loves his.

I just tried it the other day with him,

        Played put put

And one that reminded me of the Star Wars light saber game.

        I was impressed tbh.

    • Can the promo credit be used across multiple transactions/items? or is it a one-time use credit (like Dine and Discover vouchers), e.g. if I buy something for $53 and apply the credit, I loose the remaining $47 value?

      • +1

Can use multiple times until the $100 credit runs out. Only on items shipped and sold by Amazon AU tho.

  • +6

Besides being a facebook product why is this bad?

    • +24

Other than being a Facebook product, it's not bad at all. It's actually great.

The issue many have is that you have to log in using a Facebook account, and if Facebook detects that you're using a fake account or any account with a different name to your billing, then they can (and often have) effectively brick your Quest 2.

But they have promised to get better about that, allowing people to use another method to log in. But they haven't stated what that method will be.

      • +2

I thought they already removed the Facebook login requirement not too long ago?

        • +8

They announced it coming and you can manually remove it by making a support request, but you lose social features and if have to reset it for any reason have to do facebook again.

It's not officially implemented yet basically.

          • +1

@Narull: Is there any documentation on this?

          • +1

@Narull: Hey Narull. So you can contact FB and ask them to remove the FB login requirement? Is there any reason not to do this, aside from the two you mentioned?

My Quest 2 is arriving today so just wondering if I should contact them straight away and get unlinked.

            • +2

@Draycen: You need to contact Oculus support not facebook (even know we know they are the same company), but yeah no difference bar the two I said, clearly you do have to first set it up with facebook but you could then contact Oculus support and ask it to be unlinked, still play the games and such just those two things as I said.

    • +1

It sucks for PCVR because VR developers are now making games exclusively the Quest and not for PC.
      And Facebook.

It's a great headset for a great price though.

      • +2

huh? yes there are quest native ports of a few games.. with lowered visual quality - you can still run it on PC desktop and play games on the PC using this.

        • +8

I think he means that is it taking development resources away from PC VR as the base of Quest owners is now larger and perhaps more profitable and it's easier to just develop for quest?

          • -2

@Gravy: hmm expanding a miniscule niche area for game developers so that more people get into vr gaming, thus allowing more vr games / experiences to be developed in future. Nope, not seeing that as a bad thing.

            • +2

@gizmomelb: I guess the issue is that the graphical quality of the Quest 2 cant compete with PC VR at present although the experience is fantastic and untethered makes a massive difference too. So we may have to take a bit of a backward step graphically for a while until standalone VR headsets catch up.

            • @gizmomelb: Quest VR games are not on PC. That is my point.
Developers are now developing games exclusively for the quest ecosystem meaning that PCVR is dead.

You obviously didn't understand my comment so cheers for the downvotes for you being wrong.

    • +2

It's a good product; designed by the millenial version of Rupert Murdoch.

When Zuckerberg controls the digital literal world in a couple decades, we can look at the Quest 2 as the slipping point.

      • +1

Wow bit of a stretch there yo. I get they're both overlords but they aren't the same.

        • +2

Has it been confirmed that Zuckerberg has a belly button?

        • +10

          Both control media empires.

Both make decisions only with regards to expanding the power and profitability of their media empires.

Both have allowed right wing extremists to coopt their platforms for profit and power and have given rise to a growing resurgence of bloody minded ignorance and facism around the world, across multiple countries.

Zuckerberg does so successfully with non-english speaking countries too.

Murdoch has had longer to play the game or eroding society, but Zuckerberg has been very successful in catching up.

Zuckerberg is a more insightful technologist, but that isn't a good thing at all when coupled with the callous amorality clearly evident to both himself and Murdoch.

@Zaptruder: Hahaha holy shit, the cognitive dissonance in this one.

            • +1

              @Ham Dragon: Hmmm?

Do you know what that term means? Are my actions and beliefs out of alignment?

              • -5

@Zaptruder: Lmao based on that I know you don't.

                • +1

@Ham Dragon: It's clear you're projecting here. So not only do you not understand cognitive dissonance, you're experiencing it because of what I wrote. Oh dear.

Clearing stock before meta rebrand? If you’re still on the fence, now’s the time.

    • +1

Why now? I would think better to wait for a new model?

      • +4

Won't be a new model anytime soon mate, they just changing the branding, chip shortage will keep any new version from coming out for a long time yet.

        • +2

Project cambria is coming out next year though (although it's not a Quest 2 replacement)

      • Don't know, but it's already been renamed Meta Quest 2 on their website.

  • +10

Good deal, with the upcoming change that you won't have to link Facebook to it even better (you can disconnect it atm via a support ticket but you lose social features and if gotta reset it for some reason gotta relink facebook).

Anyone buying should get a referral from someone who already has a quest as well, you both get $47 AUD Oculus store credit if ya do (referral gets it instantly, person who referred them has to wait 31 days). https://www.oculus.com/quest-2-referrals/

    • +5

There is an ozbargain referral matcher here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/oculus.com

      • I just said I've used that two times with no one replying…

        • +1

I have the exact opposite problem where people ask for one and back out when they read the fine print.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/139622?page=28#comment-113…

          • +1

@toniyellow: People backing out of getting a easy referral because they have to use facebook are in for a bad time with a quest for now haha

          • @toniyellow: II haven't used it before. How does it work?
If I already have a Q2, can I still connect with someone for the credit?

            • @Awsam: The details are here https://www.oculus.com/legal/referral-program/

I've read some people have had success claiming it later by a factory reset to make their quest seem new. No guarantees though
              https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/pcdd8x/couldnt_acti…

              • @toniyellow: Im looking on the Oculus app, and I have a referral option. So I guess I just need to add someone as a friend on that Facebook account and THEY need to make/buy an oculus -_-

              • @toniyellow: So does this referral stack with the this $100 promotional offer?

                • +1

@htc: The referral is a separate thing offered by Oculus when you activate your Quest. So yes I imagine you can still apply the referral as well. Basically you get $47 in your account to spend on games.

              • @toniyellow: The factory reset thing doesnt work anymore. Once a device has been activated, it can't be used anymore for the referral, even with a new facebook account. Have tried it multiple times before. They closed that loophole.

              • @toniyellow: Thanks for all your help everyone, I was able to get the store credit by resetting my headset, unpairing it from the mobile app, click referral link on my pc, then 10minutes later re-pair with mobile app, and login with FB on the headset.
I had some frustration with the pair code not appearing in the headset, but a second reset solved that issue.

        • Keep requesting. Do as many as you can.

        • I've given referrals sucessfully.

        • I got a few replies back so send a dozen or so requests not just one or two.

          • +5

@dins: But, like dins if someone does reply to you and you've decided not to use them, have the decency not to ghost them. It's annoying getting requests, going to the trouble of sending the Facebook link and standing ready to send the referral and being ghosted.

            • +2

@tonka: I got a couple of requests for referrals this morning and have replied to both. Whether they follow through with the facebook friending is another story. It's a bit of a convoluted method.

        • I replied to 2 different people this year both who never got around to doing the referral

      • +1

Great deal and good call reminding people about the referral system. I've referred a few people as well through the Ozbargain referral system (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/oculus.com) and other methods. Well worth it for the $47 credit.

Please ensure you don't activate your Quest prior to accepting a referral although I was able to get around it (with difficulty) by resetting the headset by your mileage may vary.

    • I got a referral from a friend. How do I get this to work while buying on Amazon?
I want to make sure I don’t go too far with one process or another and mess it up.

      • +1

Doesn't matter were you buy it from mate, just as long as when you physically get the quest and set it up you register it to the same facebook account you accepted the referral on.

So go ahead and accept the referral, you then have 30 days to register the quest on the same account.

It's easy to check if you've accepted the referral just open the link again and it will say you've already accepted a referral on this account.

The trick some people mess up with is making a separate account just for oculus and then accepting the referral on one account and registering it on another, so just make sure it's the same facebook account when you register the quest to it, you will get your credit instantly (just logout then back in to the store and it will show under the price of things) your friend has to wait 31 days to get his (for some bloody reason).

        • Thanks for explaining :)

    • If anyone bought the quest wants to refer me hit me up! (I havent done once)

      • You need to enable private messages

        • did it! didnt know you had to do that

        • can you PM me the referral link?

      • You haven't enabled private messages you'll have to do that first.

  • 0% cashback?

    • Yeah I got 0% too but I think it was the stupid $10 credit that caused that..

Cause it says Amazon credit voids cashback

      But gift cards ok

  • -3

Be aware that the games are quite expensive

    • Not really, pretty standard game cost (resident Evil 4 is only $50 which is pretty good for Aus) and can take advantage of steam sales if using with a PC link.

    • +6

I've been pretty ozbargain about waiting for sales, and its alright. For an indication:
      * You can see a price history for games here https://odeals.net/platform/quest (USD) and waitlist things for when they are on sale. Their site includes app lab games (still in testing, variable quality) so not all the sales there are deals
      * The good sales are often posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/oculus.com
      * This store https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/oculiumvr.com has good deals on keys but a limited range of games
      * There is typically a big sale for black friday - see last year - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/586192 and one in the US summer

Also use a VPN to use the Canadian quest store and many things are cheaper (not always)

    • +1

Also good to know they regularly send 30% off offers. And I haven't tried it but you are supposed to be able to get a refund on a recently purchased game with under 2 hours use.

    • google rookie sideloader ;)

    • You can use a steam russia or Argentina account for 90% off games

  • +2

Can this run half life Alex on it's own?

    • +8

no, but can be wireless from a pc

  • +1

    Any referral codes?

  • Mad deal

  • +1

Bought one.. shall see if it actually gets used lol

  • +2

Wait so just checked, this is the normal price? The deal is just the $100 bonus?

    • +5

Normal price but you get $100 amazon credit to spend on something else.

    • Last time I remembered it was 50 off. not so sure.

  • Can you play Half Life Alyx on these?

    • Yes, but only if you connect it to your PC via a USB C cable, and only if you have a PC that can handle it.
