I notice your company is only 6 months old, your address is a residential house, and you're not registered for GST, are you likely to be in business for the length of the warranty?

      Good detective work.

    • +3

      Good question and fair call.
While it's a new business, I do have significant experience in the renewable energy/energy storage field and I'm not working on my own.
I should also note that I was operating as a sole trader before this for ~12 months (as the team is expanding, that was no longer appropriate).
We're now at the point where we have to register for GST this year (a necessary evil).

If the business of the past few months is anything to go by, then I think it's highly likely that we'll be around for the next 5 years and beyond.

And while I know that we won't achieve the lofty heights of Microsoft, Google or Amazon, it's worth noting that many tech companies started out without corporate headquarters or massive warehouses. But having said that, storage is definitely getting tight and we may have to find warehousing for the next lot of batteries!

  • 2324 less 1997 is 327

Wheres the 500 discount coming from

    • Rounding. $500 sounds better than $327. Lol

      • +1

"Round to the nearest $500" :D

The Victron gear we're selling on our site is already below RRP.

I'll edit this post and post them here shortly.

      • AAAh, those pesky RRPs

      • Seems I can't edit posts, but here it is:

        MPPT RRP $295.90
        DCDC RRP $414.00
        Charger RRP $277.00

Makes $986.90 or just $13.10 short of a $500 discount.

Wish this was around a few weeks ago before I already bought pretty much all the same gear. Paid about the same for the same gear with 2 x 100Ah batteries, but would have preferred the dimensions and features of your battery box.

  • Does the bluetooth in the Daly BMS mean no shunt is required to check SOC?

    • +2

Correct. I would definitely not rely on it as being absolutely accurate, but it will be right within a few percent.
It won't work until you charge the battery completely for the first time though.

  • Battery is only rated to 2000 cycles @ 100%DoD… not great.

There's a lot of manufacturers online with batteries that are rated to 3000 or even 5000 cycles @100%DoD, at similar (or even cheaper) pricing that your battery has as an RRP.
That's a hell of a lot of difference in potential life span of the battery.

I also can't see details on the warranty offered for this battery. It only mentions "5 years", but is that pro-rata or full replacement? And who fulfils that warranty in the case your business closes shop (you've only been trading for 6 months apparently)?

Not giving you a hard time unfairly, just trying to ascertain further details. $2000 is a lot of money to spend blindly.

The Victron components are proven well known quality parts…. but the battery is clearly the weak link in this deal as its a massive unknown quantity.

    • +2

Could you please point me towards a battery that gives a guarantee for 5000 cycles at 100% DoD with a 5 year warranty or longer? As far as I'm aware, there isn't a single cell manufacturer that claims that sort of cycle life. Obviously companies can claim what they want on their batteries, but if the cells can't do it, I don't see how the batteries would be able to.
We use Lishen cells, which are one of the most highly regarded manufacturers out there (together with EVE and CATL, for example). You can obviously get LTO cells that will easily do the 5000 cycles that you mentioned, but they'd be at a much higher price point and significantly heavier and bigger.

More details on the warranty can be found here, but it's a proper replacement warranty, not a somewhat meaningless pro-rata warranty: https://mullerenergy.com.au/refund_returns/

No worries about asking tough questions, as long as they're reasonable questions, I have no problems with that at all!

      • These guys have a number of batteries claiming 5000 cycles at 100%DoD with 5 years warranty.

        https://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/giant-170ah-lithium-deep-…

Mind you, they only have a pro-rata 5yr warranty not a full warranty like you do… so claimed duty cycles mean far less when you have to fork out hundreds of dollars for a 'warranty replacement'.

Thanks for the extra info (and for being so willing to answer questions here). Keep up the good work!

        • +1

I've also noticed the battery you are selling isn't just a battery… it's a battery box with the appropriate outlets (which clearly costs more than a battery on its own). I just wanted to point that out to people who might have missed that obvious point :).

          • +3

@UFO: Thanks for that, yes, it's a stainless steel case with lots of connectors. A lot of work went into making it easy to connect to the battery including the USB C charger that has PD up to 20V, so can charge laptops and other devices that need a voltage above 12V.
As USB C becomes more ubiquitous, I think this will become more and more useful.

            • @RubenM: Agreed.

Just looking at the specs again, a 250A max current draw is also very impressive!
Most single batteries will give 50 or 100A tops. Not bad, not bad at all.

i purchased one of these batteries and am absolutely happy with it
currently testing it on my camping fridge at around 2 degrees and it has almost gone a week (started it last sunday, its friday night now) and its at around 35%
its not even a good fridge - its just a cheapo $300 ebay 45 litre one

postage was relatively fast (something like 2 or 3 days) and build quality seems great, its not made of flimsy metal - its like an old army box
menergy was happy to answer all my questions and give me advice in other areas too
i dont have any testing equipment and im certainly no expert but if anyone has any questions ill try and answer

    great product imo

    • +1

Thanks very much for that! If you have any other questions, you know where to find me!

  • Are the outputs on battery box fuse protected?

    • +1

No, they are not, however you can set the BMS to any current limit you want, so it effectively works like a fuse. Obvioulsy you can't set different current levels for different connectors, so that may or may not be the perfect solution, depending on how you're using it.
Cigarette lighter plugs tend to have fuses inside them, so you're probably right there, but for the Anderson connectors it's recommended to have an external fuse, depending on what you're plugging in.

I got one of these batteries a few weeks ago. I picked up from the OPs address as it was only about 25 km from where I live and I was anxious about buying an expensive battery sight unseen.
OP was really good to deal with, responsive to questions and appears to know his stuff.
First impressions of the battery was excellent build quality, far above my other battery boxes. The numerous outputs are really useful but the BMS appears to only connect to Bluetooth if you are charging it.

Have been running a tests and it has passed with flying colours so far. It runs my Renogy 2000w inverter running an AEG dual 58v battery charger no issues.

It's been running my no name 12v 45l car fridge/freezer at 2c since last Sunday in the shed. Battery is at 40% SOC last night.

A reckon if this deal had been available if have give for it.

Obviously it's a small new company trying to grow but my experience has been good so far

    • +1

      Thanks very much John!
I should also let you know that the slimlines that you were interested in are now in too. They've passed the final quality control and are good to go!

      • Thanks Ruben, I might have parts of my anatomy that I'm partial to cut off by my wife if I buy another battery, but it may be something I'll look at in the new year.
BTW is there anyway to connect to the BMS without it being on charge? I'm using a Victron BMV-712 to view SOC etc

        • Haha, fair enough!

Unfortunately no, there isn't. It's just the Bluetooth on the BMS though, the rest of the BMS is still working.
Could you please check whether the timeout on your battery is set to 3600 or 7200? As far as I'm aware 7200 is the longest it will accept and means that the Bluetooth will stay active for two hours after charging.

  • I built a 270ahr system using Lishen batteries and Daly BMS (took punt on buying direct). So far all good but the BMS sleep waiting time needs to be set to 15300s which stops it turning itself off.

    • There you go, I learnt something myself, thanks very much for that!

From now on, I'll be able to let customers know. Thanks again!

      • Thanks JD56.

Ruben changed BMS settings as per JD56 and it doesn't time out. I'll see if that has a negative impact on power usage

  • No worries, glad to help. Plenty of good info on https://diysolarforum.com/ and also checking out Will Prowse on youtube https://www.youtube.com/c/WillProwse/videos
    Cheers.

    • Agreed, they're definitely both great resources! 🙂
