Hi Guys, First time poster I’m sorry if I’ve made mistakes. I’ve tried to do my best. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m not sure if it’s the cheapest deal but it’s defiantly cheaper then the recent deals I’ve seen for this product.

Edit: looks like it’s the lowest price it’s been thanks to @shabaka for the help!

Edit: seems to be in backorder not sure how long it will last be quick!

Thank you to everyone for the kind words. I’m glad I could help a community that’s helped so many!

    camels above

    • +2

Sorry, I was trying so hard to get it right

      • +1

see I would have been first if my post didn't have the specs and 3xcamels link haha

but solid first post! well done

        • I actually bought this from Amazon just yesterday for $79. It’s not even delivered yet

So I buy another one and return on the more expensive order? Or is there some other way?

          • +2

@Larsson: You may be able to cancel it in your account if it hasn't started fulfillment.

            • @Diji1: Ah thanks mate! Yeah I thought that right after I wrote here with panic and checked. It’s shipped unfortunately. But it’s sold by Amazon AU and I have prime, so I guess it should be no cost return I guess.

Thanks for the help though mate!

              • +1

@Larsson: yeah I would order another one at this price and return the first one if it's shipped

              • +3

@Larsson: This item doesn't appear to be eligible for free returns, looking at the item page. In that case, reading the returns policy, you can either pay at your own expense or they will provide you with a prepaid label and will deduct $7.00 from your refund.

My advice would be to try live chat and see if you can convince them to just credit you the difference or a reasonable amount as it has not arrived yet. They might decline at first, but may offer you a "one time" exception if you express how disappointed you are with the experience.

              • +1

@Larsson: To add to the above - you should still order it at this price before it sells out (maybe with a card without funds so that it doesn't start fulfillment) whilst trying to resolve what to do with your original order.

                • +1

@Trop: Okay to update everyone for people who are in the same boat, ordering at $55 is the right call. Return is free with no shipping costs (I am prime member so not sure non-prime)

So I can bust returner the one I paid $79 and just keep the one I just bought for $55 as I understand.

          • +2

@Larsson: I literally ordered one couple hours ago for $79 and then noticed price drop

            cancelled and reordered

        • -1

Well we can both say we posted it? I @ you so it must count right? Lol

  • great thanks.. Bought 2

    • +1

I’m glad you found it useful. Thank you

      • +1

i think most of us dont find it useful. we just buy now and think of a use later…

  • +2

    Great post, Nice work.

bought one also.. probably didn't need it but thanks !

    • +2

Thank you, I really appreciate it. It’s stressful posting for the first time.

      • +1

Lol you millennials definition of stress is amusing

Back in my boomer days, stress was when you’re just down to 10 or so pixels left in snake on a Nokia 3310 and hoping the next dot would spawn nicely for you. Now that’s stressful.

        • +1

          Lol I love it.

  • Why not buy something like this instead?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664185

    • Because I want to turn my 2TB 980 Pro into a thumbdrive.

      • +4

        That's a big thumb

    • +1

I saw it but I have a few NVME's lying around, so I'll use it for that. The casing looks premium to many others out there.

    • +1

Because RGB is a way of life.

    • Don't know in their case, i am buying just the enclosure because i have half a dozen ssd's laying around.

      • Guess it can work out cheaper if you can get the nvme on sale?
I got 1tb nvme for $180, so not much cheaper after you add the enclosure

    • Future upgrade options such as thunderbolt and usb 4 because nvme’s are quite a bit more faster than even the fastest enclosure out there and most certainly much faster than T7. Infact ssd external drives that match m.2 nvme speeds are insanely expensive.

Hot swapping for even more memory on the go too I guess.

Also future re-purpose the drives inside the pc to remove the limitations and have super fast drive.

But for a general purpose, mass storage end user, yeah probably not much difference and a lot simpler.

I guess we are just tech needs here, I know I am haha.

      • Why would anyone need that much speed for removable storage

        • Well heavily depends just like everything.

But advertised speeds are generally sequential and stuff like Samsung T7s random read write speeds aren’t stellar, so you actually end up getting heavily taxed, like all the way down to 3-4gbps depending on the situation. And m.2s with enclosures are much better at that, especially if you upgrade to TB3 etc.

As to why; well I transfer a lot of photos, photo libraries and do backups. So random read write speeds are quite important for me.

But at the core, the $50 difference between a 1tb T7 vs nvme+Fast enclosure (tb3 even better, albeit more expensive) is with for me and I can effort it.

I have quite a lot of ptsd from slow drive backups that take hours or worse go corrupt half way through or you find out later that you just wasted and hour haha

        • Handy for low downtime laptop upgrades, copying files to hand around at work (e.g. Large Database files, etc).

I also use something similar (no RGB) with Steam library on it. Means I can plug in and play wherever (e.g. office, home office, sim rig in the shed).

        • Why would anyone want to own the fastest car?
Why would anyone want to eat the most delicious food?
Why would anyone want to date the prettiest girl?
Why would anyone want to graduate from the most reputable school?

    • bought both

  • Congrats on the first post! Nice deal.

    • +1

      Thank you!

  • +1

bought one from wireless1 this morning and paid $70 including shipping 🥲

  • +1

I see RGB and FREE shipping, I buy.. Cheers OP! Everyone applauds your first post (except wireless1’s customer support). 😂

    • +1

My stress levels were through the roof creating the post. I’ve had a few deals I’ve wanted to post in the past but I wanted to make sure I learnt the correct way! Again thank you guys.

      • +1

Your contribution has been appreciated. To more post to come @Ghosts

        • ♥️

      • +1

Don't stress too much. Share anything that you think it's a deal. If it's not, the worst that can happen is downvotes.

  • +2

    Musttttt resist.

  • Damn… I bought this off Amazon over a week ago at $79. How unfortunate.

    • I actually just ordered it last night and it’s coming tomorrow.

Buy this and free return the first one you get? At least that’s what I am going to try haha.

  • +1

Oo bought one! Was hoping this would happen following the Wireless1 deal - now I get free postage !

  • Apart from it being RGB, what are the other benefits of getting this over other enclosures that are around the $20-30 mark?

    • +2

      RGB

    • -1

      It's ROG

    • +6

$20-$30 mark is likely SATA3 based enclosure. You might get an NVMe enclosure for ~$35 but then you are likely to get JMS583. The thing with JMS583 is that you want a later firmware revision as earlier revision does have known issue. Even with the latest firmware, JMS583 is generally regarded as the weakest of the 3 chipsets. Also, are you game enough to upgrade the firmware?

ASM2362 is likely to be the one used by this. ASM = ASMedia. Asus owns ASMedia. One of the common issues with other ASM2362 based enclosures is that they tend to not have good thermal design. This one doesn't suffer that issue.

Most people feel RTL9210 is the best out of the 3. Problem is RTL9210 based enclosure tends to be most expensive. Obviously, Intel chipset is not an option since Intel doesn't have one designed for enclosures (only for motherboards).

If you have new Prime membership, there is a chance Amazon offers you $10 voucher for purchasing it via mobile app, lowering the price of this even further.

      • Great, thanks for the explanation.

        • Samsung T7 uses ASM2362. None of the 3 chipsets is perfect and ASMedia ASM 2362 is PCIe Gen3 x2. The other two are likely the same so don't expect full PCIe gen 3 x4 performance (not that 10Gbps is sufficient to achieve that anyway).

      • asm2362 most stable one from my experience.

      • Cheers for that info. The most popular Sabrent one on Amazon apparently comes with the RTL9210 and is only $40. I think that's worth rolling the dice with.

      • I just made a forum post in the Computer section regarding a potential compatibility issue with a Volans with JMS583 chip and Crucial drives.

Do you think mine may have an earlier firmware as you mentioned?

        link here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664424

Really dont know what to buy now as I need compatibility to be essential a reasonable speed would be a bonus along with Tool-less design for speed of insertion and removal.

ps: is there a comparison page anywhere with what brands use what chipset?

  • +1

What use case people use this for out of curiosity?

    • +2

to give Laptops extra hard drive space usually.

    • Bling Bling..

  • +4

Damnn, you know the OZB can be toxic when the OP has to be so careful hahahah

    • +1

      Very good deal tho

    • +2

Absolutely. I wonder how many good deals we miss out due to this toxicity.

  • Good deal! Also available for $55+delivery at Mwave

    • +1

      Likely Amazon matching mwave.

  • +1

Congrats OP on your first post. Didn’t need it but bought it anyway 😬
    Cheers

    • +1

      ♥️

  • T7 2tb could be below 299. Where can we get a 2tb ssd for 240?

    • +2
    • +1

T7, while Samsung put in a NVMe SSD in there, Samsung opted for a DRAMless design and after the cache is exhausted, its write performance is basically at SATA3 TLC SSD level.

T7 uses ASM2362 USB-C 3.1 gen 2 chipset. Same as this enclosure. Samsung took a pragmatic approach to this. Given that the chipset is PCIe gen 3 x2 based, there is no real point to include a true PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD in there. Question is, if one were to get this enclosure, would they do the overkill and put in a true PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD in there to run at x2 mode? If so, is that wise? Obviously, one could argue you'll probably get better sustained write than T7.

The reality is probably sufficient OZBers over purchased NVMe SSDs so they need decent enclosure(s) to stop those SSDs collecting dust.

  • -2

What do you mean by defiantly cheaper?

Do you mean it is so cheap it defies logic?

    • +2

      Common misspelling of definitely.

  • Yeh , nice nearly pulled trigger the other day @$79.
Now see what SSD I can snag black friday sales.
    Thanks OP 😊

  • Remember that free Amazon Prime deal that we all spammed fake credit card numbers on? As part of that, I uninstalled and re-installed the app on my phone and somehow it spat a $10 off voucher at me. So I got this for $45 posted. I was looking at a solution like this to boost storage space on a NUC, so thanks op!

    • Wait, curios what that fake credit card Amazon prime deal was now?

    • Why the uninstall and reinstall?

      • +1

Because it said if I installed the app they'd send me a $10 voucher. I couldn't see any other way to get around it verifying that I had just freshly installed the app

  • Guys is this for a Mobo or external use only?

    • +2

It's an external drive enclosure and connects via USB-C cable

      • Thanks bud 👍

  • Nice find
Rip me just spent $14 more for slower shipping lol

  • What’s the max read write speed I could get while using this with my 3500/3000mbps drive?

    • 10 Gbps allegedly, either way, STUPIDLY quick if you have USB 3.2 Gen 2

    • +2

Well honestly that seems super hard to predict with USB being and absolute mess, and bridge chip implementations seem to make a difference, including the driver type like nvme gen3, gen4 or sata.

So if I had to guess, you are looking at 970 evo plus? Or sn750? I’d say around 800MB/s tops, which is decent and as good as it gets for USB 3.2 Gen2 enclosure. (Curse You USB naming and all its ridiculously messy standarts!!$

      • I do have 3.2 gen 2 ports, my drive is an Adata 2TB SX8200

    • +1

10Gbps and once you account for the overhead, you are looking at ~1000MB read/1000MB write.

Your SSD is 3500MB/s read 3000MB/s write. If your SSD is 3500Mbps (megabits) than it would be worse than SATA3. If all you care about is benchmark result, then you are simply buying into the marketing hype. The reality is that your SSD's SLC cache is capable of 3500MB/s sequential read. Once that runs out, the speed will drop.

When running an SSD in this enclosure, it operates in PCIe gen 3 x2 mode. How well your SSD controller manages that mode would determine its actual performance.

      • Thanks, much appreciated.

  • This enclosure may have issues with newer gen 4 ssd. Gen 5 is also coming out soon.

  • Super tempting but someone please give me a use case for a regular guy who's not a video editor.

    • I’m using an external NVMe to run games off. Might be a tad overkill, but works nicely. This is a MacBook Pro using Bootcamp so adding an internal ssd isn’t an option and some of the games are quite large.

    • +1

It's a nice toy. Will give you some fake excuses to get one:

      • You have device(s) with USB 3.1 gen 2 ports but you currently have no SSD enclosure to test it.
      • You have Series X|S or PS5 and you want to play XB1 or PS4 games on an SSD, but you want to save the internal SSD for PS5 or Series X|S games.
      • You over purchased NVMe SSDs and have at least 1 currently not in used and collecting dust.
      • You have device(s) which Thunderbolt 3/4 support. However, Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosures are too expensive. (This covers MBPs and Intel NUCs).
      • FOMO on this deal.

I am happy to run bootcamp on a $9 USB3 enclosure with an el cheapo SATA SSD. If I really need high speed Windows, I would use a PC or a Windows laptop. If I were to use bootcamp, it is probably I am travelling and just needed to quickly run a few Windows apps (too lazy to carry 2 laptops).

      • FOMO for sure haha

  • thanks OP, time to add some RGB to my portable ssd now

    • Your welcome, I only ask one favour. Make it light up like a rainbow lol

  • AH I want to buy it but I am about to move out from my current rent.. :(

    • +1

Could use a parcel locker or get it delivered to the post office directly!

  • Will this enclosure suit better for this WD SSD?

    • They are two very different products and can’t be used together.

      • shucking the M.2 from WD & placing it in this Asus enclosure won't work?

        • +1

Oh wow, I would have said most likely not shuckable, but someone in the comments does say they have and got better speeds.

Sounds like you can according to thah perosn and this enclosure just takes anything m.2 so probably yes. Give it a try and let everyone know maybe
