  • That brightness rating is super grim…

Real gamers play in basements :D

      • +17

This is Australia, silly. We don't have basements.
Real gamers play in the roof cavity. There is no better cooling that routing your ducted air conditioner straight to your PC.

        • +2

          Hahaha, fair call

250 nits for SDR is more than good enough.

Learn what the metrics represent, what you're typically aiming for in 99% of use cases, and what a huge strain on your eyes, power usage and the environment this kind of half-cooked logic delivers.

Here's the real problem: this is the worst 240Hz monitor ever, it's even bad as 100Hz monitor. Do not waste your money on it.

      • What's wrong with it?

          • +1

@jasswolf: If only good VA panels were cheaper :/

The Odyssey G7, which I assume you linked as an example of a good VA, costs over 3x more. Even considering the increased resolution, that's a lot.

If you don't need/want the contrast offered by VA, you'd almost always be better off going with an IPS.

            • +2

@eepykate: $700-$749 is regularly a sales price for the G7, and I'm expecting it to drop further for the next few months (BF, Boxing Day, Aus Day).

In terms of good quality VA in this price range, the Dell S2722DGM is legitimately good value.

@jasswolf: Thanks for giving a good alternative!

It just went on sale for $300 again (seems to be relatively common) & I am kinda considering it. Probably won't get it but I am thinking about it.

      • thanks, i was feeling bad about getting the dell 27" 165hz curved a couple of weeks ago

        • If you're talking about S2721DGF then you are fine.

          • @TaurusHead: Curved is the S2722DGM

            • +1

@SkyArrow: And it's pretty much the best 144-165Hz VA monitor on the market right now. Good for the price.

250nits is too low, lowest you can get these days in fact. Unless you use it in a dark environment, you won't enjoy the screen.

100-150 nit would be good enough unless you're using it in direct sunlight.

    • What are you talking about, you shouldn't run monitors anywhere near their maximum brightness in a normal room.

And it's not drastically low in any case.

  • Probably the first monitor to threaten the Asus VG279QM based on price I guess?

I believe the Asus is still the only monitor to do 240Hz backlight strobing + gsync still though, could be wrong. It's an amazing monitor for $500.

The price seems to be the same at

If you prefer those retailers, and/or if the shipping cost is better for you.

  • kind of off topic but are there any good 24ish inches 1080p 240hz monitors with IPS? Im guessing there arent many?

    • +2

Virtually every FHD 240Hz monitor currently sold in Australia is IPS, and plenty of them come in at 24-25". They're virtually identical in size, it's just usually tenths of an inch on the diagonal difference, and then which way the number is rounded.

  • I've got this, decent monitor but the stand sucks.

  • +2

i had this screen, its pretty average. the refresh rate is high but i found in esport games the ghosting became quite noticeable.

  • are you guys a fan of Samsung's contrast? I always find their colour to look really unnatural. It feels too much.

    • For basic monitors like this you should always be changing the out-of-the-box settings.

  • Not sure why the older model has 350nits and this one only has 250nits? Do they sometimes downgrade to save money? I mean technology gets better all the time right?

    • +1

There is a push in the US and EU to have SDR modes on monitors with a capped max brightness because energy consumption gets ridiculous if people just max out the panel (usually for no reason, or because the stock settings are bad).

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just using an updated firmware to cap the brightness.

      • In that case sometimes getting a new model is not always the best? I mean the C27FG70FQE is about 5yo but the specs seems better? Well not the refresh rate but everything else seems better? Right?

        • My argument was that the difference is pointless in practical terms. 350 nits at 100% white is searingly bright for SDR.

Not sure you'd even want to see that while in direct sunlight.

  • Would this be good for a PS5?

Imagine calling this a gaming screen in 2021

    • Just throwing this out there ($699+delivery):
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-34wp65c-b-34-160hz-qhd…

You can't order it from the website, you have to ring up or walk in because JB Hifi orders it to be sent directly from the LG warehouse to you.

      • No USB C though?

        • Agreed. No USB-C ports but has 160hz and 1ms response time. Could be useful to someone :)

    • Should I wait for Xiaomi to go on discount ?

  • So excited!!! Then FHD, pffft.

  • Those dam names though.
    What were they thinking?
