Samsung S20 FE 5G 128GB $584.35 ($534.35 with $50 Voucher for Newsletter Signup) @ Samsung Education Store

2450

Samsung S20 FE 5G is one of very best phones available in the market with Snapdragon 865 processor.

I purchased it a year ago and I have got nothing to complain.

6.5" display with 120Hz refresh rate, 3x Optical zoom from rear cam, 32MP front cam, 4500mAh battery, Qi wireless charging and reverse charging are its assets. Night mode works so good.

Now there is a huge price drop as Samsung might announce S21 FE soon. Nonetheless, $584 is a bargain for this one.

Cheers

    • Same price on gov portal.

      • Thanks, When logging in it was taking me to the consumer portal, not the gov portal. Fixed. thanks

  • Have been waiting several hours for the newsletter code, have yet to receive it.

  • Thanks. Anyone know if the GST rebate booth at Melb Int is opened for international departures? Hoping to claim the GST back for a further discount

  • Anyone have a deal on cases for the FE? They seem to not be well supported in that regard. The phone is awesome, deals on cases are rare!

  • Has prices gone up for s21. It's now $1349

Bought one a year back and love it. Not sure I can sign up for the newsletter again ??
My Wife is in need of a new phone as here older samsung is getting flaky

  • Any idea how long the $50 voucher takes with the newsletter?

  • Its back up to $899

  • +2

it's a good phone. Got it for free (via JBHIFI deal, cancel plan on the same day with Telstra. Telstra never invoiced. That was more than a year ago).

    • Same. Paid the $149 upfront for the 5G. Technically haven't paid a cent since, but they will track you down. Last heard from some collection agent in Mar…Then Telstra rang me, and cleared any amt owing. Noice

      • under telecommunications standard, Telstra cannot bill after certain months from memory. so I'm in the clear.

    Anyone have this happen?

    Uh oh, something’s gone wrong

  • deal is gone its coming up as $899 for me

    • Are you checking the Samsung Education Store?

Still showing as $584.35 for the 128GB model.

I'm almost positive that you're looking at the normal Samsung store, not the ed store.

    • huh looks like the link works now, it was redirecting me to the normal store unknowingly

Anyone have a spare $100 Loyalty voucher, ill be so grateful! PM me please :)

    • From memory, the $100 loyatly voucher only works for the normal Samsung Store. It doesn't work for the government or edu portals. The $50 newsletter signup code works though.

  • Bought 2 of these phones off JB hifi when it was first released. Everything is great except for I believe my phone does suffer with the touch screen issues. Some say that it really only affects games playing but it does drive me mad when I swype type and it doesn't register, and so I have to redo some words. Also when in a cradle in the car, pinch to zoom or moving maps using finger gestures goes wonky at times, which also drives me insane. I believe that Samsung tried to fix it with software updates but the issues remain. Are later manufactured phones free of these issues?

    • Had that same issue last Nov. Did 1 update, but declined the Android 11 update. Works perfectly now…5G ver btw

      • 5G versions here too, up to date including android 11. Issues persist, not enough to overide the whole package as value and performance but still very annoying at times.

    • Same. Good phone but fking annoying when it starts playing up.

Seems to have gotten worse with the last or second to last update.

  • Subscribe and Save $50 promotion hasn't arrived. When does this actually get sent to your e-mail?

    • It often doesn't work at all

Can anyone help me out and take a screenshot of the price for the cloud white version please? Want to claim on my 28 degrees price protection insurance - much appreciated!

    • Can't log in at the moment, otherwise I would. Will try again tomorrow.

    • OK, so for the 5G model there are currently no colour options listed, so I can only assume it's the black version that they're selling? Also, only the 128gb version is in stock. Here's the screenshot. Hopefully it will suffice for you.

I had opted to purchase this and had a complete nightmare with Samsung edu website. Log in process took multiple attempts - for some reason the landing page kept redirecting to registration. Order check out timed out multiple times. Cart emptied mysteriously.
After the 20th attempt (clearly I have no life), I paid … and the website stalled (paused) … nothing happened.
Took a copy of the last URL after transaction, then re-loaded the URL. The order showed up on my account. Then disappeared. The reappeared when I pasted the order.
Looked up order number as a guest number, order number was invalid.
Still have not received order confirmation.

I have no idea how a technology company website can be such a disaster … but there you go!

    • I think something is playing up tonight. It's playing silly buggers for me too. It's not usually like this.

    • definitely screwy. I log in then it redirects to say I am new to the store then kicks me out again

    • I had the same exact experience. I was just about to send an angrily worded complaint when I got an email confirming my order.

  • Is there anyway I have EDU account?

    • Have you ever studied at uni before? Some give a free-for-life email account for alumni.

      • I studied overseas.

    Just ordered, thanks OP!
Here's a bunch of info that no-one asked for but I felt like writing:

I signed up last night for marketing emails / $50 voucher and pre-emptively sent an email straight away about not receiving it.
Got the manually sent out welcome voucher this morning and ordered navy blue 4G option for ~$469.35

I'm not in a 5G coverage area currently so 4G is fine but hopefully I don't come to regret that $80 saving too much later on.

My current and previous were both Galaxy S8 so jumping 3 generations is very exciting for me.
Still happy with current S8 but screen is damaged so I want water-proof and better quality photos.

Interestingly the previous S8 which which was dropped on the road and run over still works years later.
The screen is totally stuffed and can only be used via screen mirroring (scrcpy), still useful for SIM hopping deals.

Ok thanks for reading, buy a phone, bye!

    Sincerely,
    buttstuff

    • 4G and 5G FE editions have different chipsets apparently which makes the 5G worthwhile. Source (timestamped): https://youtu.be/fuJkgeYoT5s?t=348

That's an old video and no longer correct. The 2021 4G and 5G models use the same chipset (SD865).

        • What a roller coaster

Which email did you use to contact them? I want to email them as well as i am still waiting for the $50 voucher

I've been using the phone since July and paid around $500-600 for it.
The fingerprint scanner is rather pathetic coming from an LG V30. At least 2x slower AND 2-3x higher failure rate - I am often using up the 5 attempts which it then requires a pass code instead. I am still using the pre-applied plastic screen protector.
I still miss the headphone jack and still think I prefer the no camera cutout from the LG V30.
Bring back the superior rear fingerprint scanner, would be great to have both in one phone.
At $500-600 its still a good choice now it seems.

  • I checked specs on samsung AU and seems to indicate the exynos cpu based on CPU speeds for the 4G version anyone able to confirm its the updated snapdragon edition?

  • my voucher just came in. clicked the link again. out of stock.
    sad.

    • +2

Samsung tends to restock reasonably quickly. Try again in a few days.

    • Same here, voucher only came in this morning and all S20 FE (4G and 5G) are out of stock :(

    • Same for me. First mixed the Pixel 6 deal by 2 hours because I had to go get a SIM to make a Telstra account, now missed this waiting on code which arrived while I was at work. Tough luck indeed :l

  • Anyone else's order still sitting on "Waiting for approval"?

Edit: NM, order confirmation just came through.

Ordered 4:30pm Wed and it arrived this morning (Fri).
Phone had latest updates installed already and no screen ghosting issues.

  • How do you do Newsletter Signup to get $50 voucher, and is the voucher instant?

    • A popup should appear when you enter the store to sign up for it. It can be instant but often doesn't turn up at all.

Is it just me, or have phones really stripped out every single hardware feature other the camera?

It seems like the only thing phones compete on these days is the cameras, the CPU/GPU, maybe the charging speed, and the screen (where the fingerprint reader has moved, to the detriment of reliability and ergonomics). Headphone jack is gone, screen is compromised by the front camera, SD card is a huge rarity, dual-SIM is very rare too - replaceable battery is long gone of course … I just wanted a phone that doesn't have a distracting camera notch, and hopefully a rear fingerprint sensor if possible. There aren't any current ones apparently, let alone ones with decent perf and battery specs.

    • The front fingerprint sensor becomes natural quickly. I don't notice the front camera punch at all on my S21+. I've come from a S9 with a rear fingerprint sensor and no front camera notch/punch.

What do you actually use a SD card for? There are better solutions for almost all uses of SD cards these days. Almost all phones have much bigger internal storage than they used to, too. S21s are dual sim (1 physical sim + 1 esim) out of the box.

You can still easily use wired headphones with an adapter, but good wireless headphones are cheap these days. Wired headphones won't exist in the not too distant future.

You need to look at it differently. Features aren't being stripped out, they're being replaced by better solutions. Jump on board. You'll find it's much better than you think.

      • -1

Are you kidding me? Removing the headphone jack and making you use a dongle is an advantage? It doesn't lock in as securely, plus into an awkward spot on the phone, and is more bulky - and it's one more thing to lose. You've clearly got zero clue if you think wireless will entirely replace wired. I HAVE wireless buds. They're great but they just can't compete with the quality of a decent DAC feeding wired head/earphones. It's just a matter of physics.

Screen fingerprint sensor is less ergonomic, and it's not as reliable as a dedicated sensor, especiqlly with a screen protector - just look at the new pixel.

Personally I use an SD for the epic amount of movie and music I want to carry with me. I travel a lot, and sometimes I don't get reception. Also, why pay for a tonne of data to stream if you can help it? Also it makes for a convenient portable drive to quickly copy stuff to/from friend's PCs/laptops etc.

I have a spare phone that has a notch. It's awful. Maybe you don't notice it, but it's objectively a downgrade for the screen. Yes, you regain all of 3-4mm from the height of the phone - who cares about that? If you bought a phone with like 80 dead pixels in a circle you'd go batshit. But you get told its designed like that and it's fine? Lmao …

eSIM would be acceptable if they were 100% supported in Australia, including the budget carriers, but they're not. Plus, being able to just swap physical sims with all of 10 seconds work is ace.

So no. Unfortunately unlike yourself I can't rely on the ignorance is bliss approach to enjoying tech being stripped down or compromised and paying a hefty price for the privilege.

        • Removing the headphone jack and making you use a dongle is an advantage?

Using wireless headphones and not having the cable is an advantage.

they just can't compete with the quality of a decent DAC feeding wired head/earphones

Very, very few mobile users have any interest in using a DAC. Did you see how LG don't make phones anymore? Their DACs didn't save them. You don't like using a USB adapter because it's bulky, but you're happy to use a DAC dongle? Doesn't make sense.

Screen fingerprint sensor is less ergonomic

Lol, according to what? You use your thumb on the screen anyway. It makes total sense to have the fingerprint sensor there. You just don't want anything to change.

it's not as reliable as a dedicated sensor, especiqlly with a screen protector

The front sensor on my S21+ is more reliable than the rear sensor on my S9, and I use a screen protector. Just because Google did a poor job with the pixel doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

If you bought a phone with like 80 dead pixels in a circle you'd go batshit.

It's not the same thing. As long as it's catered for well in the interface design it really is fine. I'd prefer an under display camera, and I'm sure that's not far away, but this is a good stepping stone.

I use an SD for the epic amount of movie and music I want to carry with me.

Larger internal memory is a better solution anyway. Streaming music uses very little data, so that really isn't an issue. SD cards are inherently unreliable. I've had a number of them fail on me and it's the worst. Surely, if you travel a lot, as you say, a laptop is better for watching movies anyway? It's weird that you need the absolute best sound quality by using a DAC, but you're happy to watch endless movies on a tiny screen. I think you're just complaining because you don't want anything to change.

I also put it to you that you would very rarely need to have your entire movie library on your device. It's a security blanket. For the occasions that you might want to watch a movie on your phone, you could spend 2 minutes copying it from a USB stick if you really couldn't stream it.

a convenient portable drive to quickly copy stuff to/from friend's PCs/laptops etc.

A USB stick or a USB cable is much quicker and easier than mounting and unmounting an SD card. Removing and inserting the SIM tray to get it in and out etc. Yuck. For anything that isn't large, cloud is so much more convenient anyway. Again, you just don't want anything to change.

eSIM would be acceptable if they were 100% supported in Australia, including the budget carriers, but they're not.

So it's the phone manufacturers fault that the carriers still require the use of 20+ year old SIM card technology? Gotchya.

          physical sims

I have no doubt there'll be no such thing in 5 years time. But keep hanging on…

paying a hefty price for the privilege

I'm not sure what price you're talking about. I have a relatively modest phone plan (Telstra's cheapest, I think) which includes plenty of data. I have a Google One cloud account which I would have anyway to store backups of my important stuff. I think it costs me $2 per month. I own some wireless headphones, but you said you already have them so you can't really list that as a cost. All my own music is hosted on Youtube Music for free. I stream it every day and do go anywhere near my data limit.

Keep yelling at clouds if you want, but you're going to have to move into the current decade at some point. Despite all your complaints, if you actually jump in and try it you'll actually find it's good.

          • @wombat81:

Using wireless headphones and not having the cable is an advantage.

You've completely missed the point. Phones have had bluetooth since the very beginning. You don't need to make it an either/or thing, you can have both, and there's a decade of proof to that. Removing the jack takes away options and leaves you with wireless. That's a disadvantage to the prior generation of phones which had both. You objectively lose the higher audio quality option. You gain nothing we didn't already have before. This is a regression.

Very, very few mobile users have any interest in using a DAC. Did you see how LG don't make phones anymore? Their DACs didn't save them. You don't like using a USB adapter because it's bulky, but you're happy to use a DAC dongle? Doesn't make sense.

I didn't say DAC dongle. I said a DAC. As in, the one built into the phone. The one that converts digital signals into an analog signal so it can be sent through the 3.5mm jack. The same device that sits inside wireless earbuds, but by necessity has to be 2nd rate because it has far less power and space to work with, plus you need two of them. i.e. a phone where they don't cheap out on the audio hardware, with decent wired earbuds, are leagues above even high quality wireless earbuds. I would know, I've tried both options - On the same phone would you be shocked to learn!

            Lol, according to what?

I'll admit ergos are subjective. For me, I find my finger naturally sitting where the rear sensor is on my current phone, which means the phone is instantly unlocked and showing whatever. It's also nice that immediately after unlocking you don't have to move your thumb back outta the way to see the whole screen. But again, this is taking away an option when both can be supported simultaneously if need be.

It's not the same thing. As long as it's catered for well in the interface design it really is fine. I'd prefer an under display camera, and I'm sure that's not far away, but this is a good stepping stone.

It's the same thing, but with the UI doing its best to work around it. I don't care about the UI, I care about watching content or playing games or whatever, and there's a fat black dot catching my eye on any bright screen. It's annoying for the same reasons as a massive cluster of dead pixels is whenever you're using for the vast majority of visual media. It's a straight downgrade to having a top bezel unless you're trying to smuggle it into a prison or something.

Larger internal memory is a better solution anyway.

Except that manufacturers love to charge a ridiculously high amount for expanded storage versions of their phones. Plus it's upgradable, which means you can expand when you run out if need be, and you can take advantage of rapidly increasing capacity per dollar. Why do you think that phones adopted this in the first place? Those reasons haven't gone away, and the value is only better with the crazy storage/$ of modern SD cards.

Streaming music uses very little data, so that really isn't an issue.

True, if you're streaming crap quality music. There's something to be said about being able to listen to HQ music and not having to worry at all about data, nor reception, nor youtube/spotify etc subscriptions, or ADS etc. It's just the highest quality music, zero buffering etc. And if you want to listen to it on wired earphones that make Apple's airpod pros or even Sony's 1000xm4's seem like amateur kit - you can do that. Or you can use them anyway. At least, that was how it was until very recently.

SD cards are inherently unreliable. I've had a number of them fail on me and it's the worst.

BS. Literally the first time I've heard of this complaint. I've had a dozen and none have failed me. Maybe you're buying crap brands or you're abusing them.

Surely, if you travel a lot, as you say, a laptop is better for watching movies anyway? It's weird that you need the absolute best sound quality by using a DAC, but you're happy to watch endless movies on a tiny screen. I think you're just complaining because you don't want anything to change.

… I TRAVEL. As in, TRANSPORT. As in, standing up in a bus, sitting down on a train next to someone. You're not going to haul around a laptop just to watch a couple eps from the season's worth of The Expanse you've got saved to your SD while you're on a countrylink train.

I also put it to you that you would very rarely need to have your entire movie library on your device. It's a security blanket. For the occasions that you might want to watch a movie on your phone, you could spend 2 minutes copying it from a USB stick if you really couldn't stream it.

Again, and again - you keep advocating for straight up downgrades. Oh, you don't /need/ that. Oh, you still have the other of the two options left.

I don't want to have to plan in advance what I want to watch. I want to be able to copy the whole lot over without carefully picking and choosing, deal with life, run to catch my bus, collapse into the seat, and /then/ figure out what I want to watch.

And now you advocate carrying around an entire USB stick? Are you serious? One moment SD cards are bad and unnecessary, the next moment I'm supposed to rely on the exact same thing except external to the phone - a USB, yet one more unnecessary thing to carry around or lose?

So many compromises you're suggesting. 'GET WITH THE FUTURE MAN, YOU SHOULD LIKE HAVING HOLES IN YOUR SCREEN, NONEXPANDABLE, MORE EXPENSIVE STORAGE, AND HAVING YOUR AUDIO OPTIONS CUT IN HALF.'

A USB stick or a USB cable is much quicker and easier than mounting and unmounting an SD card.

Who said anything about mounting and unmounting an SD card? Do you seriously have no idea what you're talking about, Zoomer? You use a USB cable. The same ubiquitous USB-C cable everyone carries with their laptop, or leaves next to their PC. You plug that into the computer, and boom - your phone opens up like a portable HDD. In fact, the internal storage and the SD are available separately so you can copy it where you like, re-arrange how you like, whatever.

Removing and inserting the SIM tray to get it in and out etc. Yuck.

What's wrong with you if you can't hack opening a SIM tray? How often are you taking the SIM out for it to be a problem anyway?!

For anything that isn't large, cloud is so much more convenient anyway. Again, you just don't want anything to change.

How is it, though? It's slower than local storage. There's ongoing costs involved if you want a decent amount of it. You better hope your reception stays good. AND - AND here's the kicker yet again - WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MANUFACTURERS TAKING AWAY OPTIONS. You always had cloud available if that's what you wanted, but for some reason despite technology getting better we're losing features and options? Ridiculous.

So it's the phone manufacturers fault that the carriers still require the use of 20+ year old SIM card technology? Gotchya.

I don't care whose fault it is, the reality is that until SIMs are rare, and eSIMs are universal, I obviously care about SIMs more. There's a reason why they've stuck around for so long, and that's because they're convenient. When eSIMs are universal and SIMs are too, then maybe hybrid dual SIM will be as useful as regular dual SIM is now.

I'm not sure what price you're talking about. I have a relatively modest phone plan (Telstra's cheapest, I think) which includes plenty of data.
I'm talking about the cost of phones skyrocketing, I'm talking about more data costing more money per month - it's hilarious that you brag about having the 'cheapest Telstra plan' when according to their website their cheapest SIM only plan is $55 a month, while I've been paying $10-15 for the last 5+ years thanks to the likes of Boost etc. But I guess spending four or five hundred dollars more a year is also an advantage of the future!

All your post says is 'phones cater to the lowest common denominator, and as someone that loves that, I therefore love paying more for less options and features'. I've tried literally everything you've mentioned and found it underwhelming.

            • @Grazz989: Ok mate. Keep yelling at clouds. All your features from 5 years ago aren't coming back so I guess you're done with phones.

              • @wombat81: Glad to know you've gone from supremely confident to having no counterarguments.

I know they're not coming back, they stand in the way of profits. I'll run my Nokia 7 plus (the dual SIM, extra RAM version) into the ground and hopefully by then they'll have come up with options that don't suck - stepping stones indeed.

  • This is still in stock in edu store if you're wondering.

I also had trouble getting the $50 voucher and had no response after emailing them. I emailed again this morning at 8am and got the code within 15 minutes. Gotta get it on top of their inbox :)
