Answers for "Why Telstra, not boost, what's the difference"

  1. Boost does not support Telstra 4GX network. Thus in some particular areas, internet speed may be slower than Telstra.

Boost do have the same 3G ad 4G coverage as Telstra and using the same internet gateway. while BELONG, LYCA, ALDI etc only use the wholesale network which have only around 63% geographic coverage (population coverage is quite small difference)

  1. Boost use VOIP for international calls, while Telstra use VoLTE which get much high call quality.

After activation, the expiry is 12 months.

  • May I ask if this deal is for new Telstar customers only? I'm using this prepaid plan now, and I will need to recharge it early next year.

    • considering they're starter packs (not recharges) you'd need to port out and then port back in.

    • +1

Yes, new customer only, you need to port out and port in if your are telstra/boost customer

  • what is the expiry date for the sim cards? (ignoring the current activation bonus - understand that changes).

    • I would like to know this too. Also if someone know if these can be changed to an esim?

      • I've been running a Telstra PrePaid eSim for almost 12 months.

There's also a Boost Mobile $300 Prepaid SIM Starter Kit also down to $234 and has 240gb included (260 if activated by 29 Nov) might be better for some if they dont need the international minutes and rather some more data.

Keen to see the evidence - here's the Boost FAQ on the 'pool:

      https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/boost_mobile

Boost use VOIP for international calls, while Telstra use VoLTE which get much high call quality.

Sorry what does that mean? VOLTE is Voice over 4G (aka LTE) - while the call is on the mobile network. Happens with Boost and Telstra. How can a call be VoLTE when it's no longer over 4G - eg an overseas satellite link?

And VoIP can mean any quality - there are low bandwidth codecs (G729 @ 8kbps) up to high bandwidth G722 at 64kpbs. HD Voice (on 3G ang 4G) is AMR-WB (IIRC) at 22kbps.

      TL;DR?

High bandwidth VOIP is "better" than VoLTE.

Most likely - overseas Boost calls are routed via low bandwidth VOIP, Telstra calls are routed via high bandwidth VOIP. Doesn't make sense though…

      • When i used to work at Telstra many years ago it was the norm that mvno/wholesale and anything not the mother Telstra brand would typically have limited network coverage and network service capability. It was very important to not compromise the Telstra network / brand premium. That said, anything could have changed since.

    • Boost use VOIP for international calls, while Telstra use VoLTE which get much high call quality.

Interesting. I usually call my daughter in the US via FB messenger but the other day called her via my "normal" phone. I'm with Boost and was shocked at how shit the quality was compared to the quality of FB. Not that it's a deal breaker as I would normally call using FB.

  • Telstra 150 is out of stock. Can I port my Boost to Telstra without the Vodafone route?

    • I would also like to know? Has anyone done this?

    • Usually you have to port out of the telstra network completely. So I believe you have to go through voda or optus network before jumping back to telstra.

  • I’ve got one from last year expiring soon. If I get the $5 Voda with this, does Voda and Telstra support esim for these respectively?
I currently get 5g on Telstra, will that no longer be the case?

    • No 5G on Telstra prepaid yearly plans (only on prepaid $60 monthly plan). Yes Telstra supports eSIM for prepaid unlike Boost.

  • I wish I could get them discounted like this from a shop front.

  • This is a good deal (I'm on this currently) but just a word of warning for those currently on Telstra already and looking to port out/port in to take up the deal.. I did the same process earlier this year and Telstra royally botched up the port, it ended up in some black hole where "the relevant team will call me back" which of course never happened.
Out of desperation it took an email sent to the CEO's email address to get someone competent enough to show some ownership and see it through.

YMMV though so just putting it out there.

    • The port out or the port in?

      • Port out went without a hitch. It was the port back in to Telstra where everything went sideways

  • I’m currently with coles. (I think use optus)

Do I need to port out and port in.
Or can port in straight away.

    Cheers

      port in straight away

  • Thanks OP. My contract just expired, so great timing!

Man, just bought the Boost ones just this Monday.

  • Is there a deadline to activate this?

    • you have about one year to activate the sim card

  • Can I bring my boost number to this deal? Thanks :)

  • Just a reminder that Telstra doesn't offer 5G access on this plan.

    • 5G: Does Boost give on its plan ?

      • None of the resellers offer 5G atm, the telcos keep that to themselves, and don't offer it on all planes. This will do 4GX which gave me 79Mb/s down,14Mb/s up whereas 5G gives 80-150 Mb/s down 5Mb/s at home, and ~ 550 Mb/s down 25 Mb/s up at work.

  • I'm waiting for the Kogan Mobile BOGOF Black Friday Sale!

  • I’m on Boost anytime plus with over 150gb expiring mid Jan, barely scratch the usage. what’s the next best plan? Probably stick to $150 year recharge?

  • Can i port to this Telstra plan directly from Woolworths Mobile?

    • I believe you can port your numbers from Woolworths Mobile directly.

      • Ported from Woolworths mobile to Telstra $300 prepaid. After receiving activation confirmation email, i popped in Telstra sim only to see SOS. Tried reboot and different phone and it didn’t work. Logged in to my Telstra app to find that all details of my prepaid recharge and number were correct. Live chat with Telstra was pretty much useless. Had to go to Store to get the Sim swapped and that worked within 10 minutes.

Came back home connected to WiFi and used ‘Transfer or Restore eSIM’ option in my Telstra app to switch to eSIM. Worked flawlessly. No barcodes to scan. It simply adds a profile to setup eSim on your phone.

I got $300 365days prepaid plan for $235. Very good value considering it includes Full Telstra network, VoLTE, 200GB data, international calling and eSIM.

  • Bought this deal last time simonline had it available, just now ported directly from prepaid boost mobile, to telstra. All done online, no issues, and done in probably less than 20 minutes. Thanks Simonline.

via checking the account, the order #1873 had been refunded a few days ago. It depends on your bank when will you get the money appears on your card/ bank account.

usually it takes around 3- 5 business days. If you not get the money by Wednesday, please give your bank a call.

  • Can the Telstra prepaid be used with an ESIM?
