Castrol EDGE 5W-30 A3 B4 Engine Oil 5L $36.69 Delivered @ Sparesbox eBay

430

Some cheap engine oil to stock up on :)

I've tried to price match at Autobarn but they said they don't price match Sparesbox, unsure about Supercheap or Repco

Edit: I've found Sparesbox eBay page and it seems like it's $36.69 + free delivery :D and updated the link
The price is the same on the official Sparesbox website if you'd like to use that to price match/beat (https://www.sparesbox.com.au/part/castrol-edge-5w-30-a3-b4-e…)

Browsing their eBay store, 5W-40 is also on sale at the same price of $36.69

    Good price!

I still find it amazing my local mechanic tries to charge $100+ Just for the oil during a service when it is frequently on special at these prices. They never miss a chance to gouge

"do you turn up to a dinner with your own steak" was the line my mechanic used… guess what mate, when it's out of warranty I'll be doing it myself

      • Well no, you normally come over with a cheaper dish

      • Well, it is your dinner, on your dinner table. He's the guest.

In other words, you're the customer, it's your car, it's your choice.

Time to find a new mechanic. Check your warranty. You should be able to go to certified mechanics with no penalties.

I give my mech my oil. He charges me labour, parts and disposal. Very fair sum. Annual car log book service done for under $300.

      • sorry meant to say "turn up to a restaurant with your own steak"…

this was after he complained about how hard it was to get the oil that my Mazda 3 used as well - so I made it easier for him by getting the oil.

anyway… once its out of warranty I'll be doing my own servicing

        • Nope, you don't, but you dam well can ask for it to be rare or medium. You also get to choose what sides you want (or don't want) with it.
The moment people mess with my right to choose/repair , you can be sure I won't go back. Which is why I never buy Apple.

Sounds like a line he has rehearsed for awhile.

    • time to find a better mechanic.

keep in mind as well that car repair shops often bulk buy oil in 20L drums so it works out much cheaper than retailers doing discount specials.

    • there is no reason why you couldn't supply your own oil and parts, so they cannot mark them all up at some exorbitant rate…

    • @parsimonious one

Not saying Mech's dont rip people off , stealerships (dealers) are worse. $200+ for an oil and filter change (capped price servicing LOL)

Just saying though , doing it yourself you can get under $50 oil changes most of the time but can be time consuming and it can get messy , then you gotta factor in the disposal of the old oil and near me there is only a handful of places that allow free drop-offs. Then there's the time consuming part of that and trying not to get the interior of the transport car messy from the old containers.

We make it sound like we are getting ripped off but i think $100 is a fair ask if the mechanic does a proper job , for instance some cars take over 5 liters of oil and even the filters can definitely be over $15 up to $45 dependent on car model…just for an oil filter , thats RRP from a place like supercheap and repco not trade price but i don't think there's much wiggle room there either.

      • I totally agree, I’d happily pay $100 for an oil change.

The last mechanic I went to, charged over $100 just for the oil. I’ve not been back

"there is only a handful of places that allow free drop-offs."

I have a simple rule - if you sell it, you take the returns. If you don't, I don't buy from you.

"Waste" oil, especially mineral oil, is a resource that has already been extracted and can be filtered and re-refined/repurposed using far less energy and resultant carbon cost that much of the crude it was initially obtained from.

I've attached the URL to the official Sparesbox website.
Try and check the other eBay listings they have, they seem to have duplicate listings which say they're in stock

I would not trust Sparesbox, much much better of getting SCA to price beat it (will get the item instantly as well, instead of waiting 7-10 days for delivery)

  • Good price. Just paid $19 ,1 litre Nulon at SCA non special price. For emergency use to top up my Skoda Superb Sportline. VAG engines use oil between services. Owners manual specification is 0.5 litres per 1000 km. That's up to 7.5 litres between service intervals. Go figure. Just saying!

    • VAG cars - so over em. They also take AdBlu but don't mind that as much as Shoddy practices and will do everything to avoid honouring warranty. Lost all trust in them after dieselgate. Had nothing but problems with the '13 Golf and a '16 Audi.

      • Oops! Just got a Nov 15 Golf TDi.
Couldn't find anything negative about it online. Is that a bad call?

        • I’ve got a 2013 Passat. It does use a bit of oil between services but otherwise it’s been great

      • Any recommendations for oil for the VW Golf 110 Tdi Highline 6 Sp Auto Direct Shift 2015?
I don't think I can use this one; am I right?
